
The Chinese car explosion continues as yet another new brand arrives in the UK
The first two cars, the AION V SUV and the AION UT hatchback, are both fully-electric and have already been revealed for other markets so we already know plenty when it comes to their design and technical make up.
Jameel Motors, the firm tasked with distributing GAC's offerings in the UK, already works with Farizon Auto in the electric van segment. The GAC cars, however, will be the first passenger vehicles Jameel Motors will have dealt with here. Jameel Motors also says 'Additional models will follow to expand the AION line-up' with first customer deliveries of the AION V and AION UT expected by spring 2026. Speaking on the new venture with Jameel Motors, Wayne Wei, President of GAC International, added: 'GAC's entry into the UK marks a crucial step in its internationalisation strategy. As we set foot in this dynamic market, GAC is committed to bringing industry-leading products and first-class services to UK consumers.'
The AION UT hatchback will provide a new rival to the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3, Kia EV3 and MG4 when it arrives. In other markets the AION UT is offered with a 50kWh battery or a larger 60kWh unit that can up maximum range from 210 miles to 310 miles (though this is from China's more lenient CLTC testing scheme). Two electric motor versions are offered - a 134bhp or a 201bhp model with both sending power to the front wheels.
The AION V is aimed at the Renault Scenic and Skoda Enyaq as a C-segment SUV. Sitting on GAC AEP 3.0 platform, it actually shares its underpinnings with the Chinese-built Toyota bZ3X and comes with several battery sizes ranging from 62kWh to 90kWh - the latter of which can provide a range of 382 miles (WLTP). It's front-wheel drive only with either a 134bhp or a 221bhp motor.
Full UK specifications and pricing for GAC's new cars will be made available later in the year as the cars near a UK launch.

The government must ensure the promise of free childcare is delivered
Takeup of the government's offer of free childcare has been one-quarter higher than predicted, which has prompted some voices in the sector to warn of its imminent 'collapse', because it is unclear how the planned expansion of the scheme in September will be funded. Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, in an exclusive interview with The Independent, says the unexpectedly high numbers signing up for the scheme is a 'good problem to have'. There is no doubt that there is a problem, however. The higher takeup meant that the Department for Education spent £2bn on the scheme in the last financial year, covering most of the first year of the Labour government, rather than the planned £1.6bn. That gap was covered by additional funding announced in the spending review in March, but as we report today, the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that the gap will continue to widen as the scheme expands. The next expansion will happen in September, when working parents with children aged nine months and older will be offered 30 hours a week of 'free' childcare. Of course, the care is not 'free' in that it has to be paid for by taxpayers generally – on the grounds that helping the parents of young children to work is a public good. As Ms Phillipson puts it: 'If people are able to work, or work a few more hours, that helps us all as a society as well and it gets economic growth going.' The funding of the scheme will continue to be under pressure, but the most important fact about the scheme so far is that it has not collapsed. The Independent was among those voices warning that it had been underfunded by the Conservative government, but to its credit the new government has increased the money available. The finances of the scheme may be stretched, and many childcare providers continue to say that they cannot recruit enough staff at the wages they can afford, but the gloomier warnings of chaos and thousands of parents left without places have not yet been borne out. It is crucial to remain vigilant as the scheme expands so that remains the case. At the insistence of Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor in the previous government, the scheme was designed to start small, with a limited offer of free hours to older children, before expanding gradually to provide full coverage. This September's expansion is the final stage of that planned rollout, which so far has gone more smoothly than we expected. If the last stage is a stretch too far and some parents cannot immediately find the places they want, that would be a blow to the government's ambitions. Ms Phillipson is right that the problem facing the scheme in its final phase is the problem of success. The higher-than-expected demand means additional pressure on the public finances in the later years of this parliament – pressure that coincides with other increased demands on Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, from slow growth, higher interest rates and a government U-turn on disability benefits spending. Providing greater access to free childcare is a good policy that will help working families. Its success and ambition should be applauded. The government must now make sure that its expansion is a success.

M25 and M26 closed in both directions over ‘police-led incident' as drivers face long delays
DRIVERS have been warned of traffic chaos as both the M25 and M26 have been shut down after a "police-led incident". The M25 has been closed anti-clockwise between Junction 6, at Godstone, and J5, at Sevenoaks. National Highways confirmed Surrey Police are still at the scene. It comes at motorists have also been hit with a closure on the M26 this evening. A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M25 is now CLOSED anti-clockwise between J6 (Godstone) and J5 (Sevenoaks) due to a police-led incident. "Surrey Police are working on scene. Please note; the M26 is also closed from J3." According to Inrix, traffic is building in three parts of the M6. There are queues forming on the northbound between Junction 11, Cannock and Junction 12, Gailey, due to an earlier crash. Meanwhile there's 80 minutes of congestion backed up southbound before Junction 8 for the M5. Delays have also been reported at Junction 11. Inrix reported: "All traffic being temporarily held and queueing traffic due to accident on M6 Northbound at J10 A454 Black Country Route (Wolverhampton / Walsall). "Queueing traffic due to earlier accident on M6 Northbound from J11 A460 (Cannock) to J12 A5 Watling Street (Gailey). "Delays on M6 Southbound before J8 M5 coming from the M54. Travel time is 80 minutes." 1

M25 partially closed following police incident
A section of the M25 has closed, according to National Highways. The government agency said the motorway was closed in both directions between junction five for Sevenoaks in Kent and junction six for Godstone in Surrey. Delays are also being reported on the M25 clockwise before the A21 at junction five in Kent. Surrey Police were on the scene, National Highways said. Traffic was stationary on the affected section of the M25, according to the travel monitoring site Highways said the event on the M25 was expected to clear between 20:15 and 20:30, with traffic returning to normal an hour Police have been approached for comment.
