Indian umpire JR Madangopal to make his on-field Test debut in SA-ZIM match

to stand in Tests currently when he officiates in the first Test between Zimbabwe and South Africa from June 28-July 2, 2025 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
While he has been named as the third umpire in a Test before, and officiated in 42 T20Is and 22 ODIs, this is the first time that the 50-year-old former Tamil Nadu batsman will be standing in the middle in the Test match. Nitin Menon, who is in the ICC Elite Panel, is the only Indian umpire presently who officiates in Test matches.
Madangopal is in the ICC Emerging Umpires Group. In the women's game, he has officiated in two Tests, 11 ODIs & seven T20Is.
Madangopal officiated in the IPL-2025 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad. He played 33 first-class matches (1763 runs@35.26) and 37 List A matches (1189 runs@45.73).

Birmingham: Yashasvi Jaiswal's promising knock ended in him making 87 while captain Shubman Gill showed enormous patience to be unbeaten on 42 as India reached 182/3 in 53 overs at tea on day one of second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at Edgbaston on Wednesday. It was a session where old-fashioned attritional cricket took centrestage, as India made 84 runs in 28 overs. Though Jaiswal fell 13 runs short of his sixth Test hundred, Gill continued to hold fort in his unbeaten 109-ball knock laced with just three boundaries. With Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 14 off 28 balls, India will look to pile more runs, as another session of toil awaits England's bowlers. The second session began with Gill and Jaiswal picking up singles whenever an opportunity came. While Jaiswal got a boundary by slicing over the slips, Gill got his boundaries off edges through gully twice, while being severely tested on playing around his front pad. Woakes continues to test Gill around the middle stump line in the hope of getting him playing across his front pad, but the Indian skipper, batting outside the crease, handled it well with his sturdy forward defence. With Tongue and Bashir coming in, Jaiswal and Gill got a four each as they brought up the fifty-run partnership. But Stokes once again pulled a rabbit out of a hat to get England a vital breakthrough, as Jaiswal tried to cut one away outside off and got a thin edge behind to keeper Jamie Smith, with the England skipper ecstatic in his celebration. While Gill continued to be happy in getting singles on both sides of the wicket, Pant took his time and respected some good bowling coming his way before dancing down the pitch to smack a half-volley from Bashir over long-on for six. Ankeet Chavan to coach Mumbai Under-14; Omkar Salvi retained as Ranji coach
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed former left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan as head coach of Mumbai Under-14 team. Chavan was one of the three Rajasthan Royals players who was banned for life for the alleged spot-fixing in 2013. They were allowed to resume their competitive cricket two years ago after the Indian cricket board had reduced their ban to seven years. Chavan continued to play club cricket in Mumbai for Karnataka Sports Club and later cleared his Level-1 exam as for coaching. 'I'm looking forward to it (on his new assignment). It's a second innings for me and there is always a turn around. I really want to thank MCA for showing faith in me. Coaching was certainly on my mind and I know what challenges it has going ahead. As it's Under-14 cricket I want to work on the basics of players and show them the path so that they can improve their game,' Chavan told The Indian Express. In 2013, the BCCI disciplinary committee had found S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Chavan guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL and had handed them life bans. However in 2015, a Delhi trial court dropped all charges against these players for lack of evidence. However, the BCCI continued to impose a life ban. In June 2021, the BCCI reduced the ban of all cricketers involved in spot fixing scandal to seven years. Chavan played 18 First-Class matches and 20 List A games apart from 13 IPL matches. The MCA announced its appointments of coaches and selectors across age group cricket on Wednesday. The MCA has decided to retain its head coach of the Ranji Trophy team Omkar Salvi for next domestic season. MCA president Ajinkya Naik in a statement said, 'His (Salvi) outstanding leadership and coaching over the past two seasons have played a vital role in the team's strong performances. His ability to bring out the best in players has been exceptional.' On the back of his Ranji Trohpy show, Salvi was appointed as bowling coach of Royal Challengers of Bangalore last season. Sandip Patil will also continue as the chairman of the selection committee.

Bengaluru Stampede: RCB in major trouble after BCCI Ombudsman orders KSCA, IPL champions to file written submissions
New-crowned Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru have landed in further trouble after BCCI Ombudsman-cum-Ethics Officer Justice (Retd) Arun Mishra directed the franchise, along with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), to file written submissions over gross negligence during the team's victory celebrations in Bengaluru, which led to the death of 11 people. The Ombudsman has granted RCB and KSCA four weeks to respond, following an official complaint filed by IPS officer Vikas Kumar. PTI is in possession of a copy of the Ombudsman's directive. The complainant has also urged the Ombudsman to bar the current owners from selling the franchise until the investigation into the tragedy is complete. "Looking at the gravity of the incident, it is considered appropriate that the Karnataka (State) Cricket Association, as well as the concerned franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore be asked to submit their written replied to the complaint," Justice Mishra wrote in his directive. 'This complaint has been filed in relation to the unfortunate stampede at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on 04.06.2025. Complaint alleges gross negligence and violation of safety norms by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise,' the directive continued. "Complainant submits that accountability must be fixed. Prayer has been made for the suspension of the RCB franchise and for invalidating ongoing sale negotiations." Justice (Retired) Mishra in his directive also mentioned that complainant Kumar would get 10 days time to give a rejoinder to the respondents. 'Let the KSCA and RCB file their respective written replies to the complaint within four weeks, with copy to the complainant as well. Showing cause why the reliefs prayed for and specified in rules be not granted. Rejoinder if any may be filed within 10 days thereafter with copy to the respondents.' One of the possible reasons for seeking a written explanation from RCB could be the growing speculation within IPL circles that the franchise is considering a sale, with the current owners allegedly attempting to distance themselves from the recent tragedy. "Apprehension has been expressed that the franchise may be attempting to distance itself from accountability and possibly offload ownership to avoid potential consequences. In the meantime, status quo be maintained," it stated. Recently the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) also deemed RCB responsible for the massive crowd gathering that led to the death of 11 fans including women and children. The Tribunal had also quashed the Karnataka government's suspension order against senior IPS officer Kumar, who faced the action in the wake of a fatal stampede. Kumar had subsequently challenged the decision of the Karnataka State government.
