Arkansas man pleads guilty in 2024 mass shooting at grocery store that killed 4
Travis Eugene Posey, 45, pleaded guilty to four counts of capital murder and 11 counts of attempted capital murder in the June 2024 shooting, according to his attorney. Gregg Parrish, executive director of the Arkansas Public Defender Commission, said Posey's sentencing is set for Aug. 4.
Parrish declined to comment further. The shooting occurred last year at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a city of about 3,200 people located 65 miles (104 kilometers) south of Little Rock.
Posey has been held without bond since the shooting and last year pleaded not guilty to the same charges.
Posey entered the plea during a hearing in Camden, which is located 29 miles (45 kilometers) southwest of Fordyce.
Posey had been scheduled to go to trial next month for the shooting. Prosecutors and police have not publicly identified any motive for Posey, who was shot and injured by officers who exchanged fire with him. Police have said he did not appear to have a personal connection to any of the victims.
During the shooting, which occurred in the middle of the day, Posey carried a 12-gauge shotgun, a pistol and a bandolier with dozens of extra shotgun rounds, authorities said. He fired most, if not all, of the rounds using the shotgun, opening fire at people in the parking lot before entering the store and firing 'indiscriminately' at customers and employees, police said. Multiple gunshot victims were found inside the store and in the parking lot, police said.
Posey lived in New Edinburg, a small town of about 150 people located southeast of Fordyce.
One of the women injured in the shooting has sued Posey, seeking monetary damages to cover medical care, lost earnings and other expenses as a result of the shooting. Attorneys for the woman have requested that a judge enter a default judgment against Posey, as he has not responded to the complaint.
The shooting had temporarily closed the only grocery store in the small town of Fordyce, prompting food distribution sites to be set up around the community. The Mad Butcher reopened 11 days after the shooting.
Authorities have said Posey had limited to no criminal history before the shooting, though he was arrested in 2011 at the entrance of Fort Drum in New York and charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon.

This story has been updated to correct the spelling of Posey's attorney's last name. It should be Parrish, not Parish.

Eerie stare of suspected gunman who killed boy, 14, and injured another in University of New Mexico shooting
An 18-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a 14-year-old boy and injuring another during a terrifying rampage at the University of New Mexico. John Fuentes is accused of opening fire on the teen as he was playing video games inside a dorm room with three other teens around 1:30am on Friday, according to police and the Santa Fe New Mexican. A 19-year-old male student was also left injured in the mayhem. He later showed up at the hospital with gunshot wounds. The teens were inside the Albuquerque dorm room inside the Casas del Rio complex when the shooting occurred. It is unclear why a 14-year-old was on a college campus or why gunfire erupted. Panicked students were seen jumping out of windows after the shots ran out and the incident sparked a shelter in place alert as police frantically searched for the suspect. Fuentes was arrested hours later and a booking photo shows him staring defiantly at the camera. The shooting took place as first-year students were on campus for orientation. It is unclear if Fuentes was a student at the university or whose dorm room they were in. Campus police responded to the incident in the early hours of Friday morning and observed blood and a broken window upon arrival. While performing a security sweep, campus police discovered the 14-year-old's body in the dorm. They notified the New Mexico State Police, who took over the investigation. Authorities determined the four were inside the dorm room when shots rang out, striking the 14-year-old. The three others, including Fuentes, 'fled from the room,' state police said. More than 12 hours later, Fuentes was arrested in Valencia County during a traffic stop and he was taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence. 'This is a tragic incident that has had a deep impact on our entire community,' New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler said at a press conference. Jaymar Tasi, who is an offensive lineman on the school's football team, said he was checking on his laundry when he heard four gunshots in the building. His friends saw students jumping out windows and running from the building afterward, he told The Santa Fe New Mexican. 'I just ran upstairs, and I just went back in my room,' he said. Mikey Beck, a student, said he heard gunshots overnight and saw what appeared to be an injured person hiding in some bushes. Two other people jumped out of a dorm window and ran, he told AP. 'It's really sketchy out here. Just being in Albuquerque is really scary,' he told the outlet. The campus was placed on a shelter-in-place order out of an abundance of caution. UNM President, Garnett S. Stokes, said in a statement: 'The safety of our campus and our community remains our utmost priority. 'We understand this incident may be especially distressing for new students and their families who are here this week for orientation. We want to assure everyone that we are fully committed to your safety and well-being.' She went on to say that she was 'deeply saddened by the loss of life and horrified by this act of violence in our campus community'. She also said orientation activities will continue as scheduled. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham extended her. 'deepest sympathies to the family of the individual who lost their life in this tragedy'. 'Let me be clear: New Mexico law prohibits firearms on campus unless carried by peace officers. New Mexico must do better at reducing gun violence, especially involving our young people. We will not accept this as normal,' she continued. Mayor Tim Keller said his thoughts were with the victim's loved ones and the university community. 'We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of life that occurred today on the University of New Mexico campus,' Keller said in a statement. The university in central Albuquerque has about 23,000 students during the school year. New students have been visiting as part of scheduled orientations ahead of the fall semester, which begins in about three weeks. New Mexico's largest city has struggled with violent crime in recent years, particularly among juveniles. District Attorney Sam Bregman, who is running for the Democratic nomination for governor, has called for state lawmakers to do more to address what he describes as a crisis. The plea for legislative action comes amid violence in New Mexico involving young suspects, including a fatal hit-and-run in Albuquerque and a shooting in Las Cruces in March that killed three and wounded 15 others. Prosecutors, law enforcement and Republican lawmakers have pressed Grisham, who is a Democrat, to convene a special legislative session to address the state's crime problem. Despite voicing her disappointment with the Democratic-controlled Legislature at the end of the last session, the governor has not given recent indications that she will be calling lawmakers back to Santa Fe.

The principal of Maguiresbridge Primary School, Honor Irvine, described both James and Sara as popular pupils who loved sport. 'I'm a teaching principal so I taught them both for two years,' she told the PA news agency. Advertisement 'James was full of fun, always laughing, loved to get a laugh, loved to be outdoors. 'Sara was the same. Sara loved outdoors, bit of a tomboy, and the two of them got on very well, (had) lots of friends and were very popular in school.' Vanessa Whyte with her daughter Sara and son James (PSNI/PA) She described their mother Vanessa, who was a member of the parents' support group which organised fundraisers for the school, as 'full of life', and a 'roll up your sleeves, get the job done' type of person. She said the vigil, facilitated by the school, offered a place for the community to grieve together. Advertisement 'It's been lovely to hear people who knew Vanessa and knew Sara and knew James, talking about them and sharing memories,' she said. 'For the community, its a place to mourn together and to support and comfort each other.' She said the family were 'much loved' and would 'live on in our memories at Maguiresbridge Primary School for many, many years to come'. 'It's hard to put it into words to be honest, we're just heartbroken. And I don't think it has sunk in, it will be the days and weeks ahead when we realise the tragic loss that has happened in this community,' she added. 'Everybody I have been speaking to finds it very hard to convey what they really feel, deep in their hearts, because there are moments in life that really do stop us in our tracks, and certainly for me, this feels like one of those moments,' she told the BBC. 'People are really stunned and tears have been shed for this beautiful family. You only have to think about Vanessa, a young mother, her two gorgeous children, a whole life ahead of them, and that has all now been cut short. 'It's a harrowing time, obviously immediately for their family, for everybody that loved them, everybody that knew them, the community that they lived in, the wider Fermanagh community and even further than that. Woman allegedly stabs colleague with scissors in attack at InterContinental Sydney hotel
A woman has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly wielded scissors in a stabbing attack against her co-worker in a luxury hotel in central Sydney. Emergency services were called to the InterContinental Sydney on Macquarie Street at 2.20am on Saturday after reports of an assault. Police found a 30-year-old woman with stab wounds to her upper body, police said. She was treated by New South Wales Ambulance paramedics and taken to St Vincent's hospital where she was due to undergo surgery today, chief inspector Gary Coffey said. A 27-year-old woman was also injured after attempting to intervene and was also taken to St Vincent's Hospital. Sign up: AU Breaking News email A 31-year-old woman was arrested at the hotel and taken to Day Street police station where she was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and assault, police said in a statement. All three women worked together at the hotel, Coffey said. He said the attack weapon was a pair of scissors and that the incident unfolded in a back office area out of public view. 'At this stage, we're unable to confirm the exact motive for this crime, other than all three persons involved in this incident are co-workers,' he told reporters on Saturday morning. 'I'm not exactly sure of the circumstances which led up to the attack, but you would have to think that there was some sort of … dispute, this morning in the work environment.' When asked whether the attack was 'frenzied', Coffey said it was – and that it was 'lucky that things didn't escalate worse than that'. A spokesperson from InterContinental said no comment would be made. The 31-year-old was refused bail to appear before Parramatta local court on Sunday.
