China says Wells Fargo banker under exit ban is involved in a criminal case

Al Arabiya4 days ago
China's foreign ministry said on Monday that Chenyue Mao, the Wells Fargo banker who has been blocked from leaving the country, was involved in a criminal case and obliged to cooperate with the investigation.
Chinese law enforcement authorities have restricted Mao's exit in accordance with the law, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the ministry, told a regular press briefing.
The US bank had suspended all travel to China after Mao's exit ban, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters last week.
The case was being investigated and Mao was obliged to cooperate with the investigation, Guo said, without elaborating on the case or how the banker was involved.
'Everyone in China, whether they are Chinese or foreigners, must abide by Chinese laws,' Guo said, adding that China will protect their legitimate rights and interests in investigations.
Mao, who was born in Shanghai and based in Atlanta, currently serves as a managing director at Wells Fargo, specializing in the international factoring business.

Risk highlighted as Chinese hackers hit Microsoft

PARIS : Software giant Microsoft is at the center of cybersecurity storm after China-linked hackers exploited flaws in SharePoint servers to target hundreds of organizations. While such cyberattacks are not new, the scale of the onslaught and the speed with which the hackers took advantage of freshly discovered vulnerabilities is fueling concern. Dutch startup Eye Security warned Saturday of online attacks targeting SharePoint file-sharing servers, with Microsoft quick to confirm the report and release patches to protect systems. The vulnerability allowed hackers to retrieve credentials and then access SharePoint servers kept at users' facilities, according to Microsoft. Cloud-based SharePoint software was safe from the problem, the company said. Eye Security determined that more than 400 computer systems were compromised by hackers during waves of attacks. Targets included government organizations in Europe, the Middle East and the United States — among them the US nuclear weapons agency, media reports indicated. 'On-premises SharePoint deployments — particularly within government, schools, health care and large enterprise companies — are at immediate risk,' cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks warned in a note. Microsoft has not disclosed the number of victims in the attacks. SharePoint had more than 200 million active users as of 2020, according to the most recent figures available from Microsoft. Microsoft has attributed the cyberattacks to groups backed by China. The culprits are believed to include Chinese state actors known as Linen Typhoon and Violet Typhoon along with a group called Storm-2603 which 'is considered with moderate confidence to be a threat actor based in China.' The Typhoon groups have been active for a decade or more, and are known for intellectual property theft as well as espionage, according to Microsoft. Less was known about Storm-2603 and its motives. 'Investigations into other actors also using these exploits are ongoing,' Microsoft said, urging users to patch SharePoint servers to avoid becoming hacking victims. Cybersecurity specialist Damien Bancal noted in a recent blog post that he found 'ready-to-use exploit code' for the vulnerability at a popular website. The assault on SharePoint servers is the latest in a series of sophisticated attacks carried out by state-sponsored groups against 'the Microsoft ecosystem,' according to Bancal. In 2021, attacks by a Chinese hacker group known as Silk Typhoon compromised tens of thousands of email servers using Microsft Exchange software. Microsoft's success at making its software commonplace in offices and homes also makes it a prime target for hackers out to steal money or information. Microsoft software can hold sensitive and valuable information. 'It's not Microsoft that is being targeted, it's its customers,' said Shane Barney, head of information security at US-based Keeper. Targeting Microsoft programs is a means to an end, and tomorrow it could be software from another company, said Rodrigue Le Bayon, head of Orange Cyberdefense computer emergency response team. China is not the only nation backing hacker operations as countries around the world hone cyber capabilities, according to Le Bayon. Nevertheless, China is repeatedly singled out by companies and goverments hit by hacks. Western countries have accused hacker groups allegedly supported by China of conducting a global cyber espionage campaign against figures critical of Beijing, democratic institutions, and companies in various sensitive sectors.

Saudi Arabia welcomes Macron announcement of French recognition of Palestinian state

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has welcomed a statement by French Emmanuel Macron that his country would recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September. 'True to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine,' Macron wrote on social media on Thursday evening. The Kingdom commends this historic decision, which aligns with the international community's consensus on the right of the Palestinian people to determine their own fate and establish their independent state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, a Saudi Foreign Ministry statement released on Friday read. It added that the Kingdom renews its call to the rest of the countries that have not yet recognized a Palestinian state to take similar steps in doing so. Saudi Arabia has repeatedly called for the creation of an independent state for the Palestinians. Around 142 countries now support Palestinian statehood, according to an AFP tally. The ministry statement urged all countries to adopt serious stances in support of peace and the rights of the brotherly Palestinian people. Israel is currently conducting a devastating military campaign in Gaza and has been accused of using starvation as a war tactic. An Israeli-backed organization distributing aid had been accused of shooting unarmed civilians trying to get food. The UN said 875 people had been killed within the preceding six weeks near the aid sites created by Israel. Peace negotiations to end the war and exchange prisoners and hostages appeared to have collapsed on Thursday night after US President Donald Trump recalled his negotiators. US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said: 'We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza.' Hamas said they were surprised by Witkoff's comments but would be willing to continue negotiations.

Brazil to Join South Africa's ICJ Genocide Case against Israel

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry revealed on Wednesday that the country is currently finalizing its submission to join South Africa's genocide case against Israel's war in Gaza at the International Court of Justice, according to Reuters. Brazil also accused the Israeli government of violating the international law by annexing the territories 'by force.' Meanwhile, Israel denies deliberately targeting Palestinian civilians, stressing that its objective is to eliminate Hamas. Lawyers for Israel have also labeled South Africa's case as an abuse of the genocide convention. 'The breaking of Brazil's long-standing friendship and partnership with Israel is a misguided move that proves the extremism of our foreign policy,' Brazil's National Israeli association CONIB said in a statement. Strong Condemnation In June, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned Israeli war on Gaza and called it a 'premeditated genocide,' during his visit to Paris. 'This is not a war. It is genocide. A genocide being carried out by a highly trained army, against women and children' Lula said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. '[It is] a premeditated genocide from a far-right government that is waging a war, including against the interests of its own people,' he said. This was not the first time for Lulu to use the term 'genocide' to describe Israel's actions in Gaza. Genocide Case South Africa accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians, following Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023. It submitted various evidence claiming, 'acts and omissions' by Israel 'are genocidal, aimed at bringing about' the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group'. South Africa accused the Israeli occupation of carrying out air strikes and killing thousands of Palestinians, mentioning comments from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as evidence of 'genocidal intent'. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 57,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 137,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Countries Joining Genocide Case Other countries such as Spain, Turkey, and Colombia have also sought to join the case against Israel. Turkey joined the case as a response to Israel's violations during the war on Gaza after it has already taken serious steps against Israel, such as the restrictions on some exports. Moreover, Nicaragua's application was submitted under Article 62 of the ICJ Statute, requesting intervention in South Africa's case against Israel. Columbia supported South Africa's case and requested a different type of intervention under Article 63 of the Statute to assist the Court in interpreting the provisions of the Convention in this case. Israel's Response Israel fiercely dismissed the case and accused South Africa of presenting 'grossly distorted' allegations of genocide. Israel insists that its bloody war in Gaza is 'self-defense,' and it targets Hamas, not the Palestinians, and that its leaders have shown no genocidal intent, reported CNN. In addition, it asked the UN court to dismiss the case on the grounds that the evidence is 'unfounded.' The ICJ also ordered Israel to stop its Rafah military assault in Gaza in response to a complaint from South Africa. It also ruled Israel must keep Rafah crossing open for 'unhindered' humanitarian aid. The ICJ also ordered Israel to submit a report to the court within one month containing all measures taken to comply with the order. In April 2024, the court set deadlines for the parties to submit their evidence and counter-memorials, which will be October 28, 2024, and July 28, 2025, respectively.
