Liberty star Breanna Stewart avoided significant leg injury, but return timeline is unclear

There appears to be reason for relief in New York. Liberty All-Star Breanna Stewart reportedly avoided a significant lower-leg injury after leaving early during Saturday's loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. That's according to Madeline Kenney of the New York Post, who reported Sunday that imaging revealed the absence of a significant injury. The nature of Stewart's injury, however, is still unclear. Liberty coach Sandy Brondello confirmed the injury on Monday, but said they do not know what part of Stewart's leg is injured. She also did not have a timetable for Stewart's return. Despite the uncertainty, the news is certainly welcome in New York as the Liberty seek to repeat as WNBA champions. Per the report, Stewart will travel with the team for New York's upcoming four-game road trip that features a potential WNBA Finals preview against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx. Stewart's status for that matchup on Wednesday is far from certain. Per Kenney, the Liberty plan "to give her time to fully recover." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Whether she's back on the court for the road trip or later, the report indicates that Stewart will be back in time for the stretch run of the season, which concludes on Sept. 11. Scary moment after apparent non-contact injury Stewart pulled up in the opening minutes of Saturday's game and asked to be taken out with what appeared to be a non-contact injury. She did not return to the game and was eventually ruled out at halftime. Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello told reporters after the game there was no update on Stewart's status. "Hopefully she'll be OK," Brondello said in her postgame news conference. Saturday's 101-99 loss to the Sparks on Saturday was the Liberty's first in six games to drop them to 17-7. They remain comfortably in first place in the Eastern Conference, three games ahead of the second-place Atlanta Dream (14-10). The Lynx maintain the best record in the WNBA (22-4), four games ahead of the Liberty in the race for home-court advantage in a potential Finals matchup. Stewart, a seven-time All-WNBA selection and two-time MVP, is key to New York's hopes of maintaining its edge in the East and repeating as WNBA champion.

ESPN proposes much-needed Indiana Fever trade deadline acquisition

As the WNBA's Aug. 7 trade deadline looms, ESPN shared moves it believes should be made throughout the league, including the Indiana Fever adding skill and scoring depth. In the article, ESPN proposes the Fever acquiring Dallas Wings forward Myisha Hines-Allen in exchange for center Damiris Dantas and a 2026 second-round pick. Here's what ESPN said about the proposed flip: After shooting 36% on 3s last season, split between the Mystics and Lynx, Hines-Allen is down to 30% this season. Since Hines-Allen is a career 35% shooter, improvement should be expected. Even that down season from Hines-Allen has been better beyond the arc than Dantas, shooting 26.5% (34% career but just 31% since 2021). As a third post behind starters Aliyah Boston and Natasha Howard, Hines-Allen should be an improvement. And with the Wings five games out of the eighth seed, getting anything in return would probably make this trade worth it. - Kevin Pelton, ESPN While Hines-Allen scored 7.8 points per game on 49.2% shooting from the field and 36% from 3-point territory last season in her combined stints with the Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx, she has taken a dip in those numbers this year as the eighth-year forward has shot just 46.7% from the field and 29.6% from 3-point territory for the lowly Wings. Given the Fever's need for another consistent scorer behind starters Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston with Caitlin Clark sidelined, Hines-Allen would be a significant improvement on the offensive end. Although Indiana has recently seen quality scoring depth off the bench from players like Lexie Hull, Sophie Cunningham, and Makayla Timpson, the team can ill-afford to be complacent as they make their second-half push towards the WNBA playoffs. As for who they would be giving up in the hypothetical transaction, the Fever send forward Damiris Dantas, who has served as a decent reserve player this season for Indiana. Despite missing time due to being named to Brazil's 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup roster this past June, Dantas has averaged 4.6 points per game on 33.3% shooting from the floor and 26.5% accuracy from long range in 20 games played. Paige Bueckers is back to face the WNBA reigning champs. Here's how to watch Liberty at Wings

Paige Bueckers missed Sunday's contest against the Las Vegas Aces, but the presumed WNBA Rookie of the Year is set to go against the league's defending champions Monday night. Though her Dallas Wings are sizable home underdogs against Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty, every primetime Bueckers broadcast commands our attention and previews a gleaming future. How to watch New York Liberty at Dallas Wings Venue: College Park Center — Arlington, Texas Time: 8 p.m. ET, Monday TV: ESPN Streaming: Fubo ($20 off) Watching in person? Get tickets on StubHub. At 7-19, this current version of Dallas is not much more than a first chapter in the Bueckers bildungsroman. The Wings have dropped six of their last seven games; they were thumped by a full 30 points in their July 7 loss to the Phoenix Mercury, and just took a 26-point L to Vegas on Sunday. Tough stuff, for sure, but the salvation here is in Bueckers' immediate translation to the pro pace. Across her last 16 games, the No. 1 pick is averaging a shade below 20 points on 47.2/32.8/85.9 shooting splits. She's also putting up 5.4 assists per game to 2.4 turnovers and 1.8 steals in that span. She's getting the most out of a struggling transition offense and is finding her way through screens, all while retaining the galactic range that made her a college sensation: Dallas' other scoring options are three-time All-WNBA vet Arike Ogunbowale (16 points per game) and defensive specialist DiJonai Carrington (11 ppg). Both guards are shooting below 40 percent from the field, though, and the squad overall is in the league's bottom three for 2-point and 3-point percentages. All that should present a clean get-right game for the Liberty, who arrive in Texas with a 17-7 record and the second-best net rating (the Minnesota Lynx are No. 1). New York plays with the W's fastest pace, tallying more than 80 possessions per 40 minutes. After a June lull, the Liberty had strung together five consecutive wins … before Rickea Jackson's game-winner sealed a Los Angeles Sparks upset over the weekend. No matter. Brooklyn's seafoam ballers are a two-way force. They are comfortably perched atop the Eastern Conference, where only two other teams are above .500 (the upstart Atlanta Dream and the injury-plagued Indiana Fever). With European star and 2019 Finals MVP Emma Meesseman ready to join the Liberty for the summer stretch, 2024's title-holders look just as formidable as they did last year. Crucially, New York's top-line forward Breanna Stewart hurt her leg in Saturday's loss, but she seems to have avoided serious damage. Stewart will ice up as her capable teammates cruise through the early August stretch of their schedule. The Liberty still field Ionescu, Jonquel Jones, Natasha Cloud and a bevy of reliable perimeter shooters.
