Family tell of 'sweet father loved by all' as man charged over tragic death
Speaking at the site on Railway Street in Balbriggan, north county Dublin, where her brother was killed on Monday, Rahala Rostas, a nursing graduate, described slain Saban as a devoted father, husband, brother and son.
'He did nothing to deserve this,' she told the Sunday World, as she laid her hand against his picture which had been fixed to the wall over the footpath where his bloodstains could still be seen.
'He was a good man, a peace-maker, who [would] turn away from any row.
'Everyone in Balbriggan knew him, he lived here all his life and everyone who knew him knows how kind he was.'
Rahala said her brother was a married man with three young children, an 11-year-old daughter and nine and four-year-old sons.

'They are asking where their father is all the time but we have to be careful what we tell them,' she said.
'His son can't sleep without his father.
'This is so hard for them.'
Saban's wife Crina also visited the scene on Thursday where flowers were laid at the spot where her husband lost his life.
'He was an innocent, amazing man,' she said, as she broke down in tears.
'There aren't words to describe how sweet he was.'
The background to tragic Saban's death cannot be divulged at present as a man is currently before the courts.
On Thursday morning, a neighbour of the deceased, 41-year-old Daniel Rostas, with an address at Hastings Green, Balbriggan, appeared before Dublin District Court accused of causing serious harm to Saban.
He was remanded in custody for DPP directions after no bail application was made on his behalf.
Gardai said Mircea Rostas was struck by a car as he stood on a footpath on Railway Street on Monday night.
Emergency services were alerted to reports of a road traffic collision and found him seriously injured on the ground.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene, but died a short time later.
Family members left flowers at the footpath on Railway St in Balbriggan where Mircea Saban Rostas was knocked down on Monday evening
Gardai have appealed for witnesses and any dashcam footage.
They also asked people not to share a graphic video showing the immediate aftermath of the collision.
The footage, posted online, shows Mr Rostas lying motionless on the ground while a bystander attempted CPR.
Family members are seen becoming distressed after arriving on the scene.
Speaking on Thursday, Saban's brother Eli said his family want justice for Saban through legal means.
'Let the law do its work,' he said. 'May he get justice by the law.'
Paying tribute to his brother, he continued: 'He was the most generous man.

'He liked peace, he would always turn his back on a row and look for peace.
'You can ask anyone in this town, everyone knew him.
'My brother lived in this town for 28 years.
'He grew up here, he went to school here.
'Everyone loved him.
A tribute to Rahala Rostas at the scene of his death this week
'It's not just our family who are devastated … it the whole community.'
Speaking with the Sunday World , Martin Collins of Pavee Point paid tribute, saying both Saban and his family were actively involved with the organisation.
'He was someone who was very well thought of in the community,' he said.
'I'd like to offer the deepest condolences of everyone in Pavee Point to his family and also to appeal for calm in the wake of what's happened here.
'The last thing people want now is any kind of retaliation.'
On Thursday, Dublin District Court court heard that Daniel Rosta is charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to the alleged victim at Railway Street on June 23.
Detective Garda John Delaney told Judge Michele Finan he arrested the accused for the purpose of charging him at Balbriggan station at 1.12am on Thursday.
He made no reply after caution and was handed a copy of the charge sheet.
Det Garda Delaney told the court he would be objecting to bail but defence solicitor Sandra Frayne said the accused was not making a bail application at that stage.
'I will be applying for bail in the future,' she said, adding that she would notify the gardai in advance.
Judge Finan granted free legal aid at the request of the defence after hearing the accused was 'not a man of means' and was in receipt of disability allowance.
Ms Frayne handed a statement of her client's financial means into court.
Judge Finan asked if the accused wished to make his next court appearance by video link but Ms Frayne asked if it could be 'in person, if that's alright.'
Mr Rostas, wearing a black and grey North Face jacket, light grey tracksuit bottoms and black and white runners, was assisted by a Romanian interpreter and the court heard he had 'very limited English.'
He was not required to address the court during the brief hearing and has not yet entered a plea to the charge, which is under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.
He was remanded in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on July 3.
Gardai are appealing to any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the Railway Street and Drogheda Street areas of Balbriggan between 8:30pm and 9:30pm to make it available to investigators.

Dramatic aerial photos released showing dig for tragic murdered student Annie McCarrick

Our aerial photos show how gardai demolished garage at rear of property formerly linked to 'a person of interest' The dig at the property in Clondalkin The dig at the property in Clondalkin A builder on site said four skips of rubble were filled during the dig at the property in Clondalkin The demolished garage at rear of the property formerly linked to 'a person of interest' The are the dramatic aerial photographs that show how gardai literally left no stone unturned during an invasive two week dig for the remains of murdered US student Annie McCarrick. The images, captured by Sunday World this week, reveal how officers completely demolished an 80sqm garage at the rear of a residential property in west Dublin, while also levelling trees. The current owners, who purchased the home in 2011 at a cost of €310,000, are in no way linked to the investigation into Annie's disappearance. Planning records obtained by the Sunday World show how after purchasing the property they were granted permission to build a new and modern two-storey home on the site, together with an 80sqm garage on the substantial rear garden. Gardai believe Annie was murdered Google Earth images show the property and the shed as they existed prior to the dig being carried out. Our pictures, taken on Thursday, reveal that the garage was completely demolished during the dig and show workmen carrying out remedial works to level out the grounds before construction can take place to restore it to its former state. A builder on the site this week praised the current owners for facilitating gardai in carrying out the search. 'They're a lovely family,' he said. 'It's obviously heartbreaking for them to have this occur given all the work and money they put in. 'But they couldn't have been more accommodating when gardai explained why it was necessary. It's just a shame no trace of Annie was found.' A neighbour revealed to the Sunday World how during the dig gardai removed four extra-large skips of concrete and rubble. 'It was a huge job,' he said. 'There was a garage in the back where the owner kept motorbikes,' he said, 'and that's completely gone. 'That's what they knocked down. You see the skip out the front there full of rubble? They filled four of them. A builder on site said four skips of rubble were filled during the dig at the property in Clondalkin 'The family [living] there now are decent people … they've been in there around 12 years. 'When they bought the property, they knocked down the existing house and built that house there instead. 'It's sad for them to have this happen but I suppose they understood why gardai needed to go in there and rule it out. 'Everyone is thinking about Annie's mother over in America. 'She's been waiting for word on her daughter for a very long time and people around here would be very aware of the case, so there's a lot of sadness and disappointment this didn't yield any results for her.' Sources confirmed in the wake of the search being wound down earlier this week that nothing of an evidential nature had been discovered. It's further understood that while new intelligence had prompted the recent developments, the search itself was speculative and investigators could not guarantee in advance that if it would lead to a breakthrough in the 32-year-old case. A source said: 'Much has been made in recent months of gardai failing to carry out an invasive and thorough search of the property in Youghal after Tina Satchwell disappeared. 'There was a lot of criticism of gardai for that. 'So, even though the search carried out over the past number of weeks didn't yield a result in Annie McCarrick's case, I don't think anyone can be critical of gardai for carrying it out.' The property in Clondalkin was formerly linked to a person of interest in the Annie's 1993 disappearance. He was arrested on the morning the search got underway. It's understood he denied any wrongdoing and was released without charge the following day after being questioned for 24 hours. The dig at the property in Clondalkin The man, who is now in his 60s, knew Ms McCarrick, a 26-year-old from New York, prior to her disappearance. When the Sunday World called to his gated country home last week, a woman living at the property said over intercom that he did not reside there. The demolished garage at rear of the property formerly linked to 'a person of interest' Today's News in 90 Seconds - June 30th In a statement issued earlier this week, a garda spokesperson said: 'Gardai continue to appeal to any person who may have previously come forward who felt they could not provide gardai with all the information they had in relation to this matter, to contact the investigation team again. 'With the passage of time they may now be in a position to speak further with the investigation team.' The investigation into the disappearance and murder of Annie McCarrick is being carried out by an investigation team from DMR South Central Division Serious Crime Unit based at Irishtown Garda Station under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer, assisted by the Serious Crime Review Team and Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Gardai continue to believe Annie was killed on the day her flat mates last saw her alive — March 26, 1993. And investigators are operating on the theory that her remains had already been buried by the time she was reported missing two days later. A man identified as a person of interest in the case was spoken to as part of the original investigation. However, he was able to provide gardai with an alibi. Friends of Annie claim that prior to her death she had told them she felt harassed by the man and that he had struck her during an argument. In recent years, investigators have focused on this individual and have contacted a number of people close to him in a bid to test the strength of the alibis he provided to gardai at the time. His arrest earlier this month is the first to have been made in the 32 years since Annie disappeared. Anyone with information is asked to contact Irishtown Garda Station on 01 666 9600 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Trio face charges for sick machete attack on girl (14) as she shielded nephew from blades of attackers

The Sunday World is aware of the identities of the trio but, for legal reasons, they cannot be disclosed at this time Some of the injuries young Geraldine suffered in the brutal attack in November 2019 Three men are finally to be charged over the horror machete attack in which a 14-year-old girl was repeatedly slashed as she shielded her one-year-old nephew's body from the blades of their attackers. Nearly six years after the video-taped attack in Lisnaskea, Fermanagh, shocked the nation, the Sunday World has learned that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in Northern Ireland has decided on the charges that are to be brought against the Athlone based trio. A document seen by this newspaper confirms the CPS issued its decision to bring prosecutions against the three men on February 5 this year. It's understood a European Arrest Warrant may be sought as the men are not resident in Northern Ireland. The Sunday World is aware of the identities of the trio but, for legal reasons, they cannot be disclosed at this time. Some of the injuries young Geraldine suffered in the brutal attack in November 2019 . All three are to be charged that on November 16, 2019, each unlawfully and maliciously wounded Geraldine Maughan with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possessed offensive weapons namely a machete, and maliciously attempted to cause grievous bodily harm to John Joyce. In a statement to the Sunday World, issued on Wednesday, a PSNI spokesperson said: 'We are working alongside the Public Prosecution Service on this case and the investigation is ongoing.' During the horror attack, baby John's aunt Geraldine was sliced open six times as she used her body to shield her godson. His grandmother Elizabeth 'Lizzy' Joyce was also treated for leg wounds. Police believe the men who burst into their home were searching for baby John's grandfather David 'Gramsey' Joyce. Gramsey, who has a fearsome reputation as a bare-knuckle boxer, was in a house nearby and raced to his family's aid after hearing the screams but the attackers had fled. Horrifically, the attack was taped on a mobile phone by one of the thugs present and later sent to Geraldine as she recovered from her injuries in hospital. Geraldine later told the Sunday World how she believed she was going to die after her lung was cut open during the vile attack. Geraldine Maughan, left, with her mother Kathleen Today's News in 90 Seconds - June 30th But she said: 'He's my godson and I love him. I couldn't let them hurt him even though they were hitting me.' Geraldine also recalled how, as the blows from the machete rained down on her, she 'looked up over my shoulder and I could see one of the men standing over me'. 'I was screaming for help,' she added. 'And then he started laughing at me, laughing like the devil, and he just wouldn't stop. 'I thought they were going to kill me and then they were going to kill baby John and then my cousin.'
