J.D. Power: Prices are high, but so is guest satisfaction
Despite hotel room rates climbing to a near-record high of $158.67 in 2024, hotel guests across all price segments report feeling they're getting better value for their money, according to J.D. Power's 2025 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index. The study found that guest perceptions of value increased across every segment, with upscale, midscale and economy properties showing the most significant year-over-year gains. This marks a notable change from the year prior, when satisfaction scores fell in the midscale and economy tiers. A key driver behind improved satisfaction appears to be hotels' investments in guestroom technology. When asked about which hotel amenities they consider a "need to have," 40% of guests selected smart TV streaming capabilities, up from 21% in 2019. Nearly three-quarters of guests indicated their room included a smart TV, with 60% reporting they used it during their stay. The study also revealed that capital investments in room furnishings, bathroom fixtures and bed comfort significantly boosted guest satisfaction scores year-over-year. Hotel mobile apps emerged as another satisfaction driver. Guests who downloaded their hotel's mobile app reported overall satisfaction scores 68 points higher than those who didn't use the app. Several repeat winners For 2025, Marriott International's Ritz-Carlton flag topped the luxury segment with a guest satisfaction score of 779, while Omni led upper-upscale properties at 731. Drury Hotels ranked highest in the upscale category with 738 points. Tru by Hilton dominated the midscale sector for the third straight year, and Microtel by Wyndham led the economy segment for the third consecutive year. In the extended-stay categories, Hyatt House continued its four-year winning streak in upscale extended stay, while Home2 Suites by Hilton claimed the top spot in upper-midscale/midscale extended-stay for the third consecutive year. Choice Hotels' WoodSpring Suites brand topped economy extended stay for the third year running.

Cannon Mountain retiring iconic aerial tram after 45 years, plans "next-generation" replacement
Cannon Mountain is saying goodbye to its current aerial tram system this fall after 45 years. But the New Hampshire ski and hiking area says something new is in the works. Currently, the tram system is able to accommodate 80 passengers. The two cable cars can cover a distance of one mile in less than seven minutes, offering stunning views of the White Mountains on their way up and down the 4,080-foot summit. "She's aged gracefully, but like all legends, she deserves a dignified retirement," Cannon Mountain general manager Jace Wirth said in a statement. "It's time to begin writing the next chapter." Cannon has not announced a final day for the current tram system, but it's expected to stop running after the fall season. Cannon Mountain aerial tramway replacement Cannon Mountain launched the country's first aerial tramway in 1938. The current tram system started running in 1980 and has carried more than nine million passengers. Now, Cannon said it has secured $27.2 million from the state to start planning a "next-generation tram system." The next step in the process is a structural analysis that will consider renovation plans for the existing towers and terminals that make up the tram system. "The Cannon tram is a symbol of New Hampshire," Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Commissioner Sarah Steward said. "Governor Ayotte has declared 2025 the 'Year of New Hampshire State Parks,' and this project ensures we continue investing in our most treasured places. We're excited for what's ahead." What to know about the Cannon Mountain tram The tram was only running on weekends and holidays during the winter season, but operates daily in the summer. The first tram of the day goes up at 9 a.m., and the last tram down is at 3:45 p.m. Round-trip tickets are $29 for adults at off-peak times, and $34 at peak times. Kids 5 and under ride free, while New Hampshire senior citizens are free during the middle of the week. On Valentine's Day in 2016, the two tram cars got stuck 40 feet off the ground because of a mechanical problem. No one was hurt, but rescue crews had to rappel 48 passengers to safety in sub-zero temperatures. New Hampshire

This Beach Was Named Most Underrated in the U.S.–and It's in America's 'Hidden Beach Capital'
The summer sun is in full effect and you may be thinking about hitting the beach, but honestly so is everyone else. Luckily there are still plenty of beaches that fly under the radar, and thanks to a new report from boat tour company BoatBooker, we know exactly where they are. South Carolina's Vereen Memorial Park was named the top hidden gem by the boating site, which analyzed Google Maps data for key terms like "secluded beaches," "hidden beaches," and "quiet beaches," zeroing in on locations with fewer than 100 reviews. Each beach was then ranked using a combined score based on its average rating and number of reviews. "America's coast offers unparalleled diversity beyond the tourist beach resorts," Vukan Simic, the founder of BoatBooker, shared. "America's off-the-beaten-path coastline offers the authentic American beach experience, the one that travelers are seeking—unspoiled waters, stunning scenery, and the freedom to truly get close to the natural wonders of our country." When it comes to Vereen Memorial Park, which sits just north of Myrtle Beach, the 115-acre park "offers a serene escape into nature and a journey through history" and is "ideal for families, pet owners, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure, tranquility, or both," according to Visit Myrtle Beach. The park also comes with the bonus of no admission fee. Beyond Vereen Memorial Park, South Carolina emerged as "America's hidden beach capital," according to BoatBooker, with five locations in the top 10 located in the Palmetto State. That includes Driftwood Beach at No. 2, Morris Island at No. 4, Station 22 at No. 9, and Edisto Beach State Park Campground at No. 10. California also earned high praise with nine spots on the list, including its highest-ranking beach, Torrey Pines City Beach in San Diego, at No. 5. Other top spots in California included Dana Strands Beach at No. 7 and Pirates Cove Beach at No. 8 to round out the top 10. The site also noted state and national parks dominated the rankings, with protected areas offering the most "pristine and uncrowded beach experiences across America." Check out the complete top 20 list from BoatBooker below.
