Councillor Anthony Hunt on Torfaen's summer and Green Flags
We've had the Cwmbran Big Event, World Heritage Day in Blaenavon, Henllys fete, events in schools up and down Torfaen and more.
Last weekend saw nearly 1,000 runners braving the heat to run in the Mic Morris 10K. The event has a great reputation, not just as a fast course and a well-run event. The feedback I had volunteering at the finish also commented on the beautiful location, starting in Blaenavon and running down the valley before finishing in Pontypool Park.
I'm pleased that nine of our parks have been awarded green flag status thanks to the dedication of volunteers working with our teams.
Pontypool Park is not only host to a great rugby club, it's also had events this summer ranging from Pontypool Pride to the weekly Parkrun and Junior Parkrun, and Party in the Park this month too. Thank you to all the community councils, organisations and volunteers who make these events so special.
This month also saw Relay for Life in Pontypool Park. Our teams walked for 24 hours to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, to help with vital medical research. We also shared stories of hope, remembered those we've lost to cancer and gave the emphatic message that no-one going through cancer treatment should feel on their own. We have a community to support each other, whatever people are going through.
In saying that, I want to pay tribute to Sophie Busson, our friend and Cancer Research UK relationship manager at Pontypool Relay for Life. Sophie has been an inspiration to so many of us, and her light will shine on. She even got me wearing a pink cowboy hat for Rodeo at Relay! Our love goes to Sophie's family – we will go on raising money and supporting each other in her name.
Our schools broke up on Friday, and I want to repeat the massive thank you I gave to all the staff in schools across Torfaen. From heads to teachers to TAs to canteen and support staff, plus governors, volunteers and PTA helpers, thank you for all your hard work. You not only keep our children safe and learning, you make a huge difference to so many young lives.
School holidays in Torfaen mean one thing – Torfaen Play! I hope everyone involved with our unique Play Service has a wonderful summer. This week the 500 staff members and volunteers are having training week. Then on Monday, July 28, until Thursday, August 22, 37 different daily provisions will see an anticipated 2,500 children and young people attend. There are food and fun camps, respite provision, open access sessions and more, all delivered in a fun and inclusive way. Enjoy your summer!

Bethan Scott to take on 500km cycle in memory of husband
Bethan Scott is embarking on her next major challenge starting on July 23, cycling 500km from London to Paris, as part of her ongoing mission to raise £1 million in memory of her late husband, Dave Scott. Bethan will be joined by fellow fundraisers Roman Mach and Helen Massey, who she met during previous charity treks and cycles in support of Nightingale House Hospice. Once in France, they'll cycle through picturesque countryside, historic market towns and the poignant war memorials of the Somme, before arriving in Paris via the Champs-Élysées and finishing at the iconic Eiffel Tower. This incredible ride is just one of many challenges Bethan has completed around the world since she began fundraising in Dave's memory following his passing in 2017. Her efforts have already raised over £180,000 for Dave's chosen charities Alzheimer's Research and Cancer Research UK, including £160,000 for Nightingale House Hospice, the place that provided care and support for him and his family. "I've made it my mission to raise £1 million in his name and this year I'm aiming to reach my next milestone of £200,000.' Bethan is grateful to have the backing of three generous sponsors for the London to Paris ride. The ASH Group, SPEN and The Pencilcraftsman have all come forward to support the challenge. Following the London to Paris cycle, Bethan and Roman will head straight into another international challenge in October, taking on the Spanish Three Peaks in Sierra Nevada National Park, tackling Alcazaba, Veleta and Mulhacén (mainland Spain's highest peak) over three gruelling days. The Spanish trek will mark Bethan's 10th international challenge, adding to an impressive list that includes the Inca Trail in Peru, Mount Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp, the Great Wall of China, the Alps, Camino de Santiago, mountains of Croatia, Mount Toubkal and cycling from Vietnam to Cambodia and Milan to Venice. In 2024, Bethan and the Everest Base Camp team and Dave's Memory Walking Group, who walked from Llandudno to Wrexham, raised almost £20,000 for Nightingale House Hospice, and she continues to be overwhelmed by the support of her fellow fundraisers. Helen Massey is also planning to take on the Welsh 3000s challenge this year to support Bethan's fundraising total. Powys football club helps raise £5k for cancer charity
Local communities came out in their hundreds for a charity football match in Guilsfield in support of Sophie Jones last weekend. Sophie of Llansantffraid has been diagnosed with Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer and is determined to raise as much funds as she can for a charity to fund research and treatment for this very rare form of cancer. The day raised around £5,150 for Sophie's chosen charity as hundreds of people descended on the newly named PRS Recruitment Stadium for a match to remember. Villagers also ensured their support with stalls and attractions throughout the day as well as food and drink to ensure spectators kept cool in the summer weather. Sophie wanted to raise awareness as well as valuable funds for the charity. With the support of her fiancee, Iwan Matthews who plays for Guilsfield Football Club in JD Cymru North, the pair set about to organise a football charity day at the PRS Recruitment Stadium Guilsfield with the help of her cousin Paul Richards, who happens to be the manager of the Wales Veteran over 45s. A side of ex-Guilsfield veterans were only too happy to support the event which also saw a coach load of players coming from South Wales to play at the PRS Recruitment Stadium. The match ended in a competitive 3-3 draw with both teams showing their qualities in front of the large crowd who were thoroughly entertained throughout. Alongside the charity match a marvellous BBQ was enjoyed by all, which was manned superbly by the Matthews family. Action from Guilsfield's charity match against Wales Veterans. A licensed bar was manned throughout the day by Pete Holding and Phil Evans, who kept the audience refreshed on a lovely afternoon in the Powys village. Young villager Ben Bellamy was also on hand with his popular Brownie stall. Thanks were expressed to all the sponsors for the day, including match sponsors the Plumbline of Welshpool and PRS Recruitment of Meifod, Guilsfield FC helpers and to the many donations received for auction items and raffle prizes.
