Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II voted NFL's top cornerback by AP
Patrick Surtain II became only the seventh cornerback to win the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, doing so last season.
His shutdown season also helped him earn the top cornerback spot in voting by a panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers who ranked the top five players at the position, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second- through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points.
Surtain received five first-place votes and three seconds. Sauce Gardner got two first-place votes, finishing second. Cooper DeJean got the other first-place vote, appearing on only one of eight ballots.
Derek Stingley Jr. finished third, Trent McDuffie was fourth and DeJean placed fifth.
Jaylon Johnson, Marlon Humphrey, Charvarius Ward and DJ Reed also received votes. 1. PATRICK SURTAIN II, Denver Broncos
Surtain had an outstanding season, allowing just 37 receptions and recording four interceptions to earn All-Pro honors.
Opposing quarterbacks had a 61.1 passer rating when targeting Surtain, who became just the second Broncos player to win the AP Defensive Player of the Year award.
He received three second-place votes along with the five firsts. 2. SAUCE GARDNER, New York Jets
After earning All-Pro honors his first two seasons in the NFL, Gardner had a down year by his standards. Still, he appeared on seven ballots to finish behind Surtain.
Gardner has forced a league-high 46 incompletions and allowed a league-low 0.60 yards per cover snap since his rookie season. 3. DEREK STINGLEY JR., Houston Texans
Stingley was a first-time All-Pro last season, emerging as one of the NFL's best cover cornerbacks.
Selected one spot ahead of Gardner at No. 3 overall in the 2022 draft, Stingley had a breakout season last year. He had five interceptions and gave up 40 catches for 382 yards and four TDs.
Stingley got three second-place votes and five fourths. 4. TRENT MCDUFFIE, Kansas City Chiefs
McDuffie earned All-Pro honors as a slot cornerback in 2023 and was second-team All-Pro after moving back outside last season.
While the Chiefs don't use McDuffie to shadow opposing receivers, he is an elite cover guy.
McDuffie allowed 54 catches for 545 yards and four TDs in 2024.
He received one second-place vote, two thirds, one fourth and four fifth. 5. COOPER DEJEAN, Philadelphia Eagles
DeJean's first career interception was a pick-6 against Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl, helping the Eagles dominate the Chiefs in a 40-22 victory.
A second-round pick in 2024, DeJean was a super slot cornerback for Philadelphia. He didn't allow a TD on 97 targets.

Kyle Shanahan: Jake Moody's still competing with whoever's out there
The 49ers released veteran kicker Greg Joseph on Monday, but head coach Kyle Shanahan stopped short of saying that means Jake Moody will definitely be handling the kicking duties in the season opener. Shanahan said that "roster numbers" led to the decision to cut Joseph because the 49ers need healthy bodies at other spots at this point in training camp. Shanahan said he would have liked to see the competition play out longer under different circumstances, but said he thinks Moody knows that he is still competing against the larger pool of available kickers. Sean Payton hosted a familiar face at Broncos training camp
The Denver Broncos had one of Sean Payton's former players at practice on Monday, although most NFL fans are more familiar with the guest for his coaching career than his quarterback days. Jason Garrett, who was a backup quarterback with the New York Giants when Payton served as their offensive coordinator in the early 2000s, was at the Broncos' facility on Monday for the team's training camp practice. 'I coached him, and he was our backup quarterback," Payton said after practice. "He's always been a close friend. He's made a couple of trips. I think he's doing some type of podcast special on leadership, and so he's here for the day. I'll spend some time with him. He's really bright, and he's been a close friend. We're going to go back to 2000, which is when we signed him. It's good to see him.' Garrett also visited Broncos training camp last summer. Garrett served as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2011-2019, and he most recently served as the Giants' offensive coordinator from 2020-2021 before transitioning to broadcasting with NBC Sports. Instead, Deion Sanders' message was clear and direct as his son prepared for his first NFL training camp after being drafted in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns: stay focused mentally. "Dad, he's one person that — he'll handle his, we handle what we've got to do," Shedeur said Monday. "It was like, 'Y'all need to focus on what y'all could focus on. Y'all can't sit here and feel sorry for me.' … At the end of the day, you're all able to see and you're all able to understand everything on and off the field that I go through. "So then you've got to be some type of human at some point in the way I'm doing everything and how I'm handling everything that's thrown at me. You've got no choice but to applaud that." Monday marked Shedeur's first time talking to reporters since his father, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado's head coach, announced on July 28 that doctors had removed his bladder to ward off an aggressive form of cancer. Shedeur was back on the field after missing Saturday's practice because of arm soreness. ADVERTISEMENT To say Shedeur has had an eventful first eight-plus months of 2025 would be an understatement. There was the hype about him being a possible first-round pick leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, followed by a well-publicized drop to the fifth round, where he was taken 144th overall by the Browns. The Browns are bringing along Shedeur slowly, with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett competing for the starting job. Third-round pick Dillon Gabriel has also received some first-team snaps. So far, Shedeur hasn't taken any snaps with the first-team offense. He has faced the first-team defense a couple of times while taking snaps with the second- and third-team offenses. "The defense does a great job of mixing players in, so (line)backers, you've got rookies out there," he said. "Sometimes DBs, you've got different guys out there. Truthfully, I don't care what O-line I go out there with. It could be ones, twos, threes, whatever the situation is. And I know Friday when the game is, if I'm with twos, if I'm with threes — it don't matter to me. "I'm just ready to get down and get to doing what I could." While Deion Sanders visited Shilo Sanders during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' training camp on July 23, the focus soon shifted to when Coach Prime would appear in Cleveland. Shedeur, however, asked his father to stay away because of the lack of snaps and the attention that would follow. "I don't want him to come and see me get a couple of reps, and then he's cheering like a good dad," Shedeur said. "Like, 'Nah, you can't be proud of me right now, I got to get to where I'm going,' I know there's a lot I've got to do to get there. I just want everything that I'm doing to be focused on this time, and I don't want distractions. "We know how everybody would take it, as taking away from the team, with my own dad showing up. It's a gift and a curse at the same time." Coach Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees have not outlined how snaps will be divided for Wednesday's joint practice and Friday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Part of this uncertainty comes from Pickett and Gabriel both dealing with hamstring injuries. Both did individual drills on Monday. The recent trend throughout the league is for veteran players to receive most of the snaps in joint workouts, with rookies then playing in the preseason games. For Sanders and Gabriel, the games would be the best indicators to date of how they can adapt to things on the fly. "You're (quarterback is) obviously not wearing a red jersey, so you're free game in those situations, whereas you're not in practice or a joint practice with another team," Stefanski said. "So I think those are all things that we weigh as coaches trying to figure out what our team needs for a given season, for a given week." Shedeur did have one of the best throws on Monday with a 28-yard completion to Luke Floriea on fourth-and-17 during a two-minute drill. Reporting by The Associated Press.
