Min's surprise visit exposes BC hostel's poor conditions

Time of India3 days ago
Visakhapatnam
: The deplorable state of basic amenities in govt hostels has once again come to light after home minister Vangalapudi Anitha discovered a strand of hair in her meal while dining with students at a BC girls' hostel.
Anitha conducted a surprise inspection of the hostel in her own constituency of Payakaraopeta on Monday night. Upon arrival, she found that the hostel warden was absent and overall maintenance was visibly inadequate.
After speaking with the students and learning of their grievances, she joined them for dinner — only to uncover a strand of hair on her plate. She also criticised the discrepancy between the meals mandated by govt guidelines and what was actually being served.
Visibly appalled, the minister confronted the kitchen staff. "Is this the kind of food you serve to children?" she asked. Ordering an inquiry, she instructed officials to install CCTV cameras on the premises without delay to improve accountability and safety.
A video of the incident has since gone viral, prompting public criticism. "If this is how the home minister is treated during a surprise visit, imagine what the students endure every day," remarked a netizen.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Anitha said providing good facilities to students is the primary goal of the NDA govt. "However, the menu was not being followed at Payakaraopeta hostel. The warden was not available, and there was no security in the hostel. We have suspended the warden," the minister said.

CM: Won't tolerate hooliganism in the name of Marathi

Mumbai: Hooliganism under the guise of Marathi pride will not be tolerated in the state, CM Fadnavis warned on Friday. He said police had registered an FIR and taken action in the Mira Road incident where a businessman was beaten up by MNS workers for not knowing Marathi. Speaking to the media, Fadnavis said beating up someone over language was wrong. "We are Marathi and are proud of the language. Insisting that a person speak in Marathi is not wrong, but beating up a businessman because he does not know it is wrong. Our Marathi-speaking people are doing business in different states, and if they do not know the local language, should they get similar treatment? Such behaviour and hooliganism are not correct. Action will be taken against such violent behaviour," he said. CM Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday, "We are proud of Marathi, but no injustice can be done to any other Indian language. Sometimes I am amazed they embrace English but create disputes over Hindi. What kind of thinking is this, and what kind of action is this?" "Should businessmen not do business? If a Marathi-speaking businessman goes to Assam and does business there and takes time to learn Assamese, should he be meted out similar treatment? Should the people of Assam beat him up? If you genuinely take pride in Marathi, then serve the language, start classes to teach Marathi, teach your children Marathi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Why have you set up schools where it is clearly mentioned that Marathi is the third language?" he asked. On the Thackeray cousins holding a "victory rally" over state govt's withdrawal of two GRs about Hindi being taught as a third language from Class 1, Fadnavis said they (Thackerays) seem to be happy about the decision taken by govt. "Let them hold the victory rally. The committee to make recommendations was set up by them, they put their aide on the committee, the committee recommended that Hindi and English should be made compulsory from Class 1 to 12, the recommendations were accepted by them in the cabinet, the minutes were signed by them. .. the Marathi manoos knows they are double-faced," he said. This was a reiteration of his earlier statement that Uddhav Thackery as CM had accepted the report of the Mashelkar panel recommending that Hindi be the third language from Class 1.

'Indian diaspora in Africa identifies as African because...': Woman's post supporting Zohran Mamdani goes viral

Woman's post explaining why Mamdani is not wrong to identify himself as an African went viral. Amid the controversy over New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani 's race, a woman supported Mamdani identifying himself as an African though not by blood and said the entire Indian diaspora in Africa identifies as African. "...because we are! From! Africa!" the woman, Sophia Babai, wrote on BlueSky. The woman explained that her parents are from the same diaspora as Zohran's father Mahmood Mamdani and they will always introduce themselves as African, and there is nothing wrong in it. Sophia explained that Americans don't understand the extent to which the Indian diaspora in East Africa is a separate culture in itself. She said that compared to Indians, they eat different food, follow a different branch of Islam and have a culture of their own, which is not Indian. Their language is stuffed with Swahili and they look different from Indians. Woman's post on Gujarati African diaspora in connection with Mamdani went viral Indian diaspora in Africa identify as Africans, the woman said. "It is also just incredibly funny seeing white Americans claim that Zohran can't identify as African because he isn't Black, like sir ma'am where do you think white people came from," the woman said explaining how a group called Lohana who are believed to be from Lahore ended up in Guajarat and Punjab and later converted -- tracing the roots of Mamdani's family. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Every Gujarati African I have ever met identifies as African first, and probably Indian second but possibly not Indian at all. Indians certainly consider us African, to a point where more traditional Indians will not intermarry with us, even if they are ethnically and religiously identical," the woman explained. The post came in reaction to a major row over Zohran Mamdani claiming himself to be African-American or Black in the application for Columbia University. Though he did not get into Columbia, the revelation that he attempted at a faulty racial identity triggered a political storm, though Mamdani said he was not aiming to gain anything but was trying to capture his diverse background as he was born in Uganda.

Resolve Hinjewadi IT Park woes by July 25 or be ready to face agitation: Supriya Sule

Pune: MP Supriya Sule on Friday threatened to launch an agitation if civic and infrastructure issues in Hinjewadi IT Park are not resolved by July 25. Following a ground survey of the area, Sule reiterated her long-standing demand for a dedicated authority to address the region's complex governance challenges. In a strongly-worded letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sule called for creation of a special city development authority or an industrial township authority with autonomous powers for Hinjawadi-Maan-Marunji cluster and nearby villages -- Jambhe, Gahunje, Nande, Lavale, Pirangut, and Bhukum. "There must be integrated planning, funding and service delivery. Right now, governance is fragmented," she told TOI. According to 2024 STPI report, Pune region accounts for a majority of Rs 1.05 lakh crore annual software exports. Yet, Sule noted that the area continues to suffer from poor civic amenities, traffic congestion, unauthorised construction, and frequent waterlogging. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo "There has been rampant construction over natural drainage channels in multiple locations. This has worsened flooding issues," she said, adding that Metro debris, uncleaned drains, and incomplete roads have compounded the crisis. During Friday's visit, Sule said she had repeatedly sought time from the CM and demanded a comprehensive meeting with all stakeholders. "It must be a jumbo meeting involving all stakeholders, and not just a formality," she said. She also called for the removal of Metro construction debris, immediate cleaning of all drains, and completion of roads within a year—commitments that, she said, were made to her by officials. A review meeting with the industries minister is scheduled for July 8, she said. Sule said she would now visit the area twice a month to monitor the situation. Responding to local demands to merge the area with Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, she said, "We are open to any solution—whether PCMC or a new authority—as long as the issues are addressed."
