MADRID (AP) — Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother were killed in a car accident in Spain when the Lamborghini they were in veered off a road and burst into flames, police said Thursday. The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed to The Associated Press that the 28-year-old Jota and his 25-year-old brother, André Silva, were found dead near the northwestern city of Zamora.Jota's death comes weeks after he married Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League title. On getting married, she wrote in a social media post, 'Yes to forever.' They said there were no other vehicles involved and that the brothers were alone in the car. The bodies were undergoing forensic analysis. It wasn't clear who was driving the car. Police were looking into the hypothesis that the accident happened because of a blown tire while they tried to overtake another vehicle. The crash occurred while Jota and Silva, who is also a Portuguese soccer player, were traveling eastward along an isolated stretch of highway about an hour west of Zamora.Video images of the aftermath published by Spanish media showed braking tire marks veering off the road toward torn-apart guardrails. The burnt-up car was seen several meters ahead, with some of the vegetation around it destroyed by the fire.Jota was taking his summer break from soccer after having helped Portugal win the Nations League. That June 8 final against Spain in Munich was his last match.Liverpool's players are due back to start training for next season on Monday. His last goal for the club was the winner in the Merseyside derby against Everton in April, which moved the team closer to the league title. His brother Silva played with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.Portugal mourns loss of brothersPortugal's Prime Minister Luís Montenegro commented on the 'unexpected and tragic' deaths. He said Jota was 'an athlete who greatly honored Portugal's name.''I extend my deepest condolences to their family,' he said. 'It is a sad day for soccer and for national and international sports.'Born in Porto in 1996, Jota made his professional debut with Portuguese club Paços de Ferreira. The Portuguese soccer federation released a statement lamenting the deaths. Federation president Pedro Proença said Portuguese soccer was 'completely devastated.''More than a fantastic player, with almost 50 appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his colleagues and opponents. He had a contagious joy and was a reference in his community,' Proença said in the statement. The Portuguese federation said it has requested a minute of silence before Thursday's match between Portugal and Spain at the Women's European Championship being played in Switzerland.'We lost two champions,' Proença said. World Champion Spain Routs Portugal 5-0 in Their Euro 2025 Opener

Esther González scored twice, and world champion Spain delivered a statement of intent by routing Portugal 5–0 in their Women's European Championship opener on Thursday. The 32-year-old González became the oldest player to score for Spain minutes before 18-year-old Vicky López became the youngest. Spain captain Alexia Putellas also scored for La Roja, showing she's ready to lead the team to success after missing Euro 2022 with a knee injury. Spain lost to eventual winner England in the quarterfinals of that tournament. Substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto completed the scoring with a header in stoppage time. González wasted little time before opening the scoring after 87 seconds with a flick past Inês Pereira. It quickly became apparent the Portugal goalkeeper would have a busy game. She did. Only 24 minutes were played when the fans started a Mexican wave around the nearly 30,000-capacity Wankdorf Stadium – normally home to Swiss Super League team Young Boys. The club also has a women's team, which is also called Young Boys. Spain dominated possession in a textbook first-half display. Teammates' work off the ball ensured there was always a passing option. No player had the ball for long as it zipped around, and the Portuguese players were left to chase it. But Spain coach Montse Tomé may have concerns about her team's second-half performance, as her players' level of control dropped. Martin-Prieto's late goal was the only addition. The game was preceded by a moment's silence for Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, killed in a car crash with his brother the night before.

Portugal and Spain players pay tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother before Euro 2025 opener

Portugal and Spain players observed a period of silence before their Women's European Championship opening game Thursday in memory of Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota. Both sets of players also wore black armbands for the match. Players and supporters stayed silent for around 20 seconds before the fans started applauding. Jota and his brother André Silva were killed in a car crash shortly after midnight in northwestern Spain when the Lamborghini they were traveling in veered off a road and burst into flames, Spanish police said earlier. Their deaths prompted an outpouring of grief from fans, players, and officials across both women's and men's soccer. Some Portugal fans displayed banners in tribute to Jota before their team's Euro 2025 opener. 'Thank you for everything,' was written on one. 'Rest in peace,' said another. 'Today for them,' Portugal forward Francisca (Kika) Nazareth had said on Instagram some hours before the match. 'One of our own,' teammate and fellow forward Jéssica Silva wrote. 'Diogo wasn't just a star. He was one of the good ones, the loyal ones, the attentive ones, the easy-going ones… one of those who don't need noise to make their mark. Thank you, Diego. Thank you, André. Football has become poorer… and so have we. You will never be forgotten.'
