Mets beat Braves 4-0, lose Griffin Canning to injury
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso had three hits and an RBI and the New York Mets overcame the loss of starting pitcher Griffin Canning to injury in the third inning Thursday night for a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves and a split of the four-game series.
The Mets, who had lost 10 of 11 games before a 7-3 win over the Braves on Wednesday night, moved back into first place in the NL East, a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Canning worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings before suffering a left ankle injury on a non-contact play while trying to race off the mound. After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said it 'looks like an Achilles injury.' The team said he would undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury.
After Canning left, four relievers limited the Braves to two hits the rest of the way. Austin Warren (1-0) replaced Canning and threw 2 1/3 one-hit innings.
Tyrone Taylor lofted a sacrifice fly against Grant Holmes (4-7) in the fourth, and Alonso doubled the lead with a run-scoring hit in the fifth. Jeff McNeil added a two-run single in the seventh.
Holmes allowed two runs and six hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings.
TIGERS 8, ATHLETICS 0
DETROIT (AP) — Dietrich Enns pitched five scoreless innings in his return to the majors as Detroit beat the Athletics.
Enns (1-0) gave up a single and two walks in his first game since he threw two scoreless innings for the Tampa Bay Rays against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 24, 2021.
The 34-year-old pitched for the Seibu Lions in Japan from 2022-23 before going 13-6 last season for the LG Twins in South Korea.
Jeffrey Springs (5-6) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings.
Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres homered for the Tigers while Zach McKinstry had three hits, including a double and a triple.
RAYS 4, ROYALS 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Shane Baz allowed three hits over a career-best eight innings, Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit back-to-back homers in the sixth, and Tampa Bay beat Kansas City for a three-game sweep.
Baz (8-3) struck out nine and walked one. Jacob Lowe had three hits for the Rays, and Jake Mangum hit a run-scoring triple.
Tampa Bay has won five of six to move a season-high 11 games above .500 (46-35) and a half-game behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees, who were off Thursday.
Paul Gervase gave up singles to Jonathan India and Vinnie Pasquantino before Pete Fairbanks came on with one out in the ninth and got Maikel Garcia to ground into a 6-4-3 double play for his 15th save.
Tampa Bay starters have thrown 22 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.
The Royals were also shut out on Wednesday and scored one run in their three losses to the Rays. Kansas City has gone 14-27 (.341) — third worst in the majors over that span — since starting the season 24-16 (.600).

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Shota Imanaga returned from the injured list to throw five innings of one-hit ball, lifting Chicago to a victory over St. Louis for a split of a four-game series.
Michael Busch homered and singled and Carson Kelly also had two hits for the NL Central-leading Cubs.
St. Louis was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Five Chicago pitchers combined on a three-hitter.
A left hamstring strain cost Imanaga (4-2) nearly two months. In his Busch Stadium debut, Imanaga gave up a first-inning single to Masyn Winn and then retired 10 batters before issuing his lone walk.
Imanaga, an All-Star last season as a rookie, lowered his ERA to 2.54.
Daniel Palencia allowed the first to batters to reach before striking out the side in the ninth for his eighth save in nine opportunities.
Busch hit a 3-2 fastball from Andre Pallante (5-4) over the wall in right field in the second inning. He scored again in the fourth when Ian Happ drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk.
In the eighth, Pete Crow-Armstrong scored from third when Dansby Swanson was caught trying to steal second.
ASTROS 2, PHILLIES 1
HOUSTON (AP) — Cam Smith hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to give Houston a win over Philadelphia.
The rookie's second hit of the game came off Orion Kerkering (5-3) and gave the Astros their fourth straight win.
Brandon Marsh tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the inning to end the Phillies' 26-inning scoreless streak.
The Astros took a 1-0 lead on Yainer Diaz's RBI single in the second inning. They only managed three more hits off Phillies starter Christopher Sanchez, who struck out 11 with zero walks over six innings. Sanchez has not issued a walk in three straight starts.
Hunter Brown lowered his league best ERA to 1.74 by scattering three singles over seven shutout innings, with nine strikeouts. He did not allow a runner to reach second base.
Bryan Abreu (3-3) struck out Trea Turner to end the eighth, and then struck out Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Nick Castellanos in the ninth.
Rafael Marchán had two of the Phillies' four hits. Bryson Stott reached base twice and scored the Phillies' lone run.
BLUE JAYS 6, GUARDIANS 0
CLEVELAND (AP) — Kevin Gausman threw eight innings of two-hit ball, Alejandro Kirk and Nathan Lukes drove in two runs apiece and Toronto beat Cleveland to win the three-game series.
Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left the game in the third inning after being hit by a 96 mph fastball from Guardians starter Tanner Bibee. X-rays came back negative, and the team said Guerrero sustained a forearm contusion.
Gausman (6-6) gave up one walk on 104 pitches with six strikeouts and reliever Chad Green finished the Guardians' fifth shutout of the season.
Addison Barger led off the ninth with a single, Ernie Clement and Jonatan Clase each drew a walk to load the bases with one out and pinch-hitter Kirk's single scored Barger and Clement. Clase scored on a throwing error by left fielder Steven Kwan, one of four by Cleveland.
Kwan hit in a double in the first for the Guardians, whose only other hit was single by Kyle Manzardo in the fourth.
Bibee (4-8) gave up three hits and two runs in six innings.
DODGERS 3, ROCKIES 1
DENVER (AP) — Clayton Kershaw struck out five to inch closer to 3,000, Shohei Ohtani hit his 28th home run, and Los Angeles beat Colorado.
Kershaw (4-0) struck out five in six innings for his fourth straight win and has 2,997 strikeouts over his 18-year career — three short of becoming the 20th major leaguer and the third active pitcher to reach 3,000.
Ohtani's 419-foot homer to right-center gave the Dodgers a 3-1 lead in the seventh.
Mookie Betts had two hits and an RBI and Freddie Freeman had an RBI single for the Dodgers, who have won 10 in a row against the Rockies — six this season.
The Dodgers, who trailed 1-0 after Brenton Doyle homered off Kershaw in the second, had their major league-high 31st comeback victory.
Tanner Scott pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 21 chances.
MARLINS 12, GIANTS 5
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kyle Stowers and Agustín Ramírez each homered and Miami beat San Francisco to complete a three-game series sweep.
Xavier Edwards had a two-run double for Miami, which has won four straight overall, five of six, and six straight on the road.
Rafael Devers had three hits including a homer and a double for San Francisco, which has lost eight of its last 11.
Devers' homer was his 17th and his second in nine games since being acquired by San Francisco last week.
The Marlins broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth on Eric Wagaman's two-run double in a three-run inning.
Stowers hit a three-run homer in the first and Ramírez hit a two-run shot in the third — both off Giants starter Hayden Birdsong — to give Miami a 5-0 lead.
Devers hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and the Giants tied it in the fourth when June Hoo Lee's leadoff triple keyed a three-run inning.
Birdsong (3-2) allowed seven runs and four hits with four walks in four-plus innings.

MADRID (AP) — Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí left hospital on Sunday and is expected to rejoin the squad in the next few days to try to play in the Women's European Championship, the Spanish soccer federation said. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner was hospitalized after falling ill with a fever late Friday. She tested positive for meningitis. 'After several days hospitalized with viral meningitis, Aitana Bonmatí has been discharged from the hospital and will join the Spanish national team in the coming days,' the federation said in its brief statement, without giving more detail about her condition. SPIELBERG, Austria (AP) — The Austrian Grand Prix is set to stay on the Formula 1 schedule until 2041 after a long-term extension was announced Sunday for the race at the Red Bull Ring. Austria already had a contract through 2030, agreed two years ago, and the new extension sees it match the Miami Grand Prix as the only F1 events contracted into the 2040s. The Austrian Grand Prix is closely connected with Red Bull's presence in F1. The Red Bull company's co-founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, who died in 2022, funded the renovations that allowed it to return to the calendar in 2014 after an 11-year absence, and rebranded it as the Red Bull Ring. 'I am delighted that Formula 1 will remain at the Red Bull Ring for many years to come,' his son Mark Mateschitz said in a statement Sunday. Carlos Alcaraz loves playing on grass and is trying to win a third Wimbledon title in a row
LONDON (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz's first match on a grass court came just six years ago. He's obviously a quick study. When Wimbledon gets started Monday, the 22-year-old from Spain will play in the first Centre Court match of this fortnight, an honor reserved for the previous year's men's champion. The contest against Fabio Fognini will open Alcaraz's a bid for a third consecutive championship at the place. That's something only four men have achieved in the Open era, which began in 1968: Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Not bad company. Alcaraz already is 5-0 in Grand Slam finals, which includes going 2-0 at the French Open — which he won three weeks ago via a comeback from two sets down against No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final — and 1-0 at the U.S. Open. Last year, the No. 2-ranked Alcaraz became the youngest man to win a major trophy on each surface: grass, clay and hard courts. But he's got a fondness for the green stuff. 'The most beautiful tennis that we can watch is on grass. The style that the people bring to the court when they play on grass. … The sound of the ball,' said Alcaraz, who will go into Monday on a career-best 18-match winning streak, including a title at the Queen's Club tournament last weekend. 'The movement is really tough, but when you get it, it's kind of (as though) you're flying.' He loves that it allows him to show off the variety in his game and all of the skills he possesses. 'I think on grass it's the style that you have to play, so that's what I like the most.' It's instructive to hear what Djokovic had to say about Alcaraz after a straight-set loss in last year's final at the All England Club. 'He just was better than me in every aspect of the game,' Djokovic said. 'In movement, in the way he was just striking the ball beautifully, serving great. Everything.' Those words carry weight. Djokovic has won seven of his men's-record 24 Grand Slam trophies at Wimbledon but was the runner-up to Alcaraz in 2023 and 2024.
