Rugby Australia want 'accountability' on late call in Lions test
Hugo Keenan's last-minute try gave the Lions a 29-26 win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but the Irish fullback only scored after Jac Morgan had cleared out Carlo Tizzano in a ruck in the buildup.
The Wallabies wanted a penalty for high contact but Piardi allowed the try to stand, a decision slammed by Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt in his post-match press conference as contrary to World Rugby's campaign to improve player safety.
"Joe's comments at the press conference were 100 per cent aligned with mine as a CEO and a former Wallaby," Waugh told the Sydney Morning Herald.
"Our position on that particular decision is consistent to what Joe outlined in his analysis of that last breakdown.
"Clearly there'll be the usual process, which is what happens after every test match, and we'll certainly be looking for a level of accountability from World Rugby over the next period of time."
Waugh will not have to go far to air his views with senior World Rugby officials in Sydney this week for events looking forward to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Saturday's victory gave the Lions an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series ahead of the third and final test at Sydney's Stadium Australia this weekend.
Max Jorgensen, one of the few Wallabies who might still be playing when the Lions next visit Australia, said on Monday it had been crushing to lose in Melbourne after leading the match for 79 minutes.
"It really hurts, it's a tough pill to swallow. I was absolutely gutted personally, I know everyone in the team was," the 20-year-old winger told reporters at the team hotel.
"To have to wait another 12 years to have the chance of getting a series win is obviously devastating."
It is 121 years since the Lions swept the Wallabies in a test series and forward Nick Frost said there was a real determination in the squad to put their best foot forward in Sydney at the weekend.
"We're definitely keen to rip in," the lock said.
"It's a massive match, going out there playing in front of your friends, for your family and your nation. We know there's so many things that we've got to improve on but there's some really good parts of that game.
"There's definitely a sense of confidence in what we have done and, in general, what we want to do."

Itoje, who was part of the Lions squad that drew the 2017 test series in New Zealand and lost narrowly in South Africa in 2021, said the achievement was "right up there" in his career highlights. "You want to be a part of being a Lion, that in of itself is a humongous achievement, but you want to be a part of a series-winning side, "Speaking to some of the guys from 2013, speaking to some of the golden oldies from '97, they look back and have such fond memories. "You want to be a winning Lion. You want to be part of that esteemed group." No Lions squad since the 1974 tour of South Africa has managed to go unbeaten through a test series, while the Wallabies have not been swept by the tourists since 1904. "This is a huge game," said Itoje. "The Wallabies ... have shown the quality side they are and I know they're going to be hungry. They're going to be up for it. "But we also want to make some history this weekend. If we can get another win, that would be amazing."

Australia sweep T20 series against West Indies
Australia completed a 5-0 sweep of the West Indies in their Twenty20 international series with Ben Dwarshuis's bowling paving the way for a three-wicket victory in Basseterre, Saint Kitts on Monday. Mitchell Owen top-scored for Australia with 37 off 17 balls, while Cameron Green (32), Tim David (30) and Aaron Hardie (28 nout out) all made valuable contributions as the visitors reached their target of 171 with 18 balls to spare. The win sealed the first T20 series sweep by an Australian men's team in the West Indies, and saw them end the tour with a perfect 8-0 record after a similar sweep in the three-test series. "I didn't expect 5-0 at the start of the series," Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said. "But we played some great cricket. It was something we spoke about after the fourth game. "We knew no Australian team had completed a clean sweep. We've had guys come in and played different roles for us." The match featured 15 sixes, which Marsh attributed to the size of the venue. "I think it's a small ground, so there's always going to be more sixes than normal," he said. "But I think if you look down our batting order in all the five games, we had a lot of power and I guess the messaging was just to play their natural game." Marsh also lauded the performance of his relatively inexperienced bowlers in the death overs. "I'm pretty sure in the last four overs, we didn't go for more than 40 or 50 across the five games," he said. "It's really hard to do. So I think all of them executed. West Indies fans must have feared the worst when Australia won a fifth straight toss and bowled the hosts out for 170, a total they reached thanks in large part to Shimron Hetmyer's knock of 52 off 31 balls. Dwarshuis picked up Hetmyer's wicket as well as those of openers Brandon King (11) and Shai Hope (9). "It was a little bit of a slower wicket so we tried to hit the wicket hard and use the slower balls as well," said Dwarshuis, who was named player of the match.
