Kane Cornes blasts AFL umpires claiming the league is nearly at a 'crisis' point after Port Adelaide's victory against North Melbourne

Daily Mail27-04-2025
Kane Cornes has fired up over the standard of officiating in the AFL this season, claiming that the current system and quality of umpires is not good enough.
He even went as far as stating that the league was now almost in 'crisis' over the matter.
Boos rang out at the Adelaide Oval after Port Adelaide fans fumed at a decision against their team during their clash against North Melbourne on Saturday night.
On-field umpires had made several head-scratching decisions during the match, but Port were able to hang on to secure their fourth win of the season.
Cornes, a Power club champion, took aim at the level of officiating claiming that four umpires being on-field during a match was not working.
'I won't often do this, and if I do, pull me up on it — but now's my time to launch,' Cornes said on his show Kane's Call.
"We're at almost crisis levels with umpiring."

Kane Cornes has blasted the standard of officiating in the AFL claiming that the league is nearly at a 'crisis' point
'We're at almost crisis levels with umpiring today.
'Four (on-field umpires) is not working and we've got to look at the 50-metre penalty.'
He skipped back through several pieces of footage showing where umpires had missed a call for a high tackle on Jason Horne-Francis and a missed high tackle on Ollie Wines, who was also pulled up for holding the ball and handed a 50m penalty. Cornes added that North kicked four goals from 50m penalties during the match.
He then questioned why there was a lack of consistency, relating to some of the marking contests umpires were calling and then missing.
'I think four umpires is not working, we need to look at whether they go full-time because the quality of umpiring right now is at the level where it is affecting games,' he said.
'Four goals they kicked from 50s, two goals they kicked directly from free kicks; that is six of their 13 goals which were directly attributed to umpiring.
'I couldn't believe it, and it really did take the shine off what was a pretty hard-fought game in the end.'
It comes as North Melbourne forward Paul Curtis has been slapped with a three-match rough conduct ban for a tackle that concussed Port Adelaide's Josh Sinn.
Boos rang out at the Adelaide Oval after Port Adelaide fans fumed at a decision against their team during their clash against North Melbourne on Saturday night
In the second quarter of the Kangaroos' nine-point loss to the Power on Saturday, Curtis ran down Sinn from behind and pinned both arms.
The Port Adelaide defender fell forward and hit his head on the Adelaide Oval turf.
Because Sinn was concussed, the Curtis tackle was graded severe impact, along with high contact and careless conduct.
As it stands, Curtis, who kicked three goals against the Power and has 18 for the season, will miss games against Essendon, Brisbane and Richmond.
The Kangaroos have until Monday morning to decide whether to appeal the suspension.
Losing Curtis, 22, would be a hammer blow given his stellar form.
Kangaroos skipper Jy Simpkin can accept a $1000 fine for instigating a melee with former teammate Jason Horne-Francis, who was slugged $1875 for his second such offence.
Port forward Mitch Georgiades was fined $2000 for tripping Dylan Stephens.
Brisbane's Noah Answerth can accept a $2000 fine for striking St Kilda's Jack Higgins, and Saint Liam Stocker received a $2000 fine for tripping Lion Zac Bailey.

Jack Ginnivan mocks Ken Hinkley with priceless celebration as Hawthorn get payback against Port Adelaide

Hawthorn have exacted some belated payback on Port Adelaide with a slogging 38-point win to revive their top-four hopes. The Hawks booted five goals to one in the last term in a 13.9 (87) to 7.7 (49) victory in atrocious conditions at Launceston's UTAS Stadium. Hawthorn antagonist Jack Ginnivan iced the win in near-freezing conditions with the last goal of the game - and then made an aeroplane motion with his arms. The celebration followed Power coach Ken Hinkley being fined $20,000 for a similar reaction, plus verbal taunting, of Ginnivan and Hawk players after they lost last year's semi-final. 'Will he give them the aeroplane here back to Kenny if he kicks it, Jack?' commentator Dwayne Russell asked moments beforehand. 'Yes he does! Yes he does!' Cameras panned to Hinkley, who smiled in reaction to the cheeky taunt. 'Payback is deserved,' Hinkley later said. 'I have no problems with it and I am OK with it, I think it's good for the game, the theatre of the game. 'And good on Jack ... and Hawthorn themselves as a club. I won't be one that sits here and does anything but acknowledge that it was my turn today.' Hawk coach Sam Mitchell could also see the lighter side of the exchange. 'That is what you're going to get from Jack,'' he said. 'The banter between the clubs made a little bit more interest in the game. 'We finish the year one (win) each ... but it's good to get one back against Port because they have obviously caused us some pain and trauma, and all the Hawks fans some pain and trauma, over the last 12 months.' Hawk veterans Jack Gunston and Jarman Impey kicked three goals each in a win that lifts their club to fourth ahead of other results. And their teammate Dylan Moore was best-afield with 32 disposals, two goals and nine tackles. The 11th-placed Power slipped from finals contention in Hinkley's 13th and final season as coach before handing over to assistant Josh Carr. Mitchell said the Hawks set up the win with their strong first quarter into a gale - after a feisty start, scores were locked at 3.2 apiece at the first break. Hawthorn booted three goals to one in a rain-soaked second stanza, with Gunston scoring two, including a stunning 30m set shot from a boundary line. That strike gave the Hawks a handy 13-point halftime buffer. And despite kicking into the wind in the third, Hawthorn again held sway to lead by 13 points at three-quarter time. The Hawks then swept with the wind to a victory as on-ballers James Worpel (26 disposals) and Josh Ward (26), Impey (26) and utility Blake Hardwick (27) revelled on the heavy track. Port's Jack Lukosius and Mitch Georgiades scored two goals each, while winger Jase Burgoyne (26 touches) and half-back Kane Farrell (25) were busy.

World Matchplay Darts 2025 schedule, time, TV channel and odds

The 2025 World Matchplay gets underway at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Saturday night, with the defending champion in action. Luke Humphries lifted the Phil Taylor Trophy last year, beating Michael van Gerwen 18-15 in the final. The world number one is a leading contender to claim the title again, alongside the likes of world champion Luke Littler and the bang in form Gerwyn Price. The World Matchplay is notoriously difficult to win on more than one occasion, though, with only three players ever managing multiple Matchplay titles. The Power dominated the event for so long, winning it 16 times, with only Van Gerwen (three) and Rod Harrington (two) boasting more than one title.. Humphries could join that very small club this year, as could James Wade, Gary Anderson, Peter Wright, Dimitri van den Bergh, Rob Cross and NAthan Aspinall. Littler is favourite, though, despite never winning a match in the tournament before as he lost in the opening round to MVG on debut 12 months ago. The tournament runs from Saturday July 19 to the final on Sunday July 27. Sky Sports will be showing the tournament, on Sky Sports Main Event and Action. Streaming is available on Sky Go and for non-Sky Sports subscribers through Now TV. 'The World Matchplay is one of those tournaments I wanted to win more than anything, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. 'I think the venue is so iconic, the fans all love their darts and they just create a brilliant atmosphere. 'Huge gap' between Hundred hosts & other counties

A report into the financial health of county cricket has revealed a yawning gap between those clubs who host a Hundred franchise and those who do Leonard Curtis Cricket Finance Report, external shows Surrey, Lancashire and Warwickshire generated 44% of the total revenue of all 18 first-class counties in also found a number of counties are reliant on central funding from the England and Wales Cricket Board for the majority of their income with 71% of Northamptonshire's revenue coming from the ECB, while for Leicestershire it is 67% and Derbyshire 56%."Cricket in England and Wales remains overly reliant on central distributions, TV rights, and international fixtures at a handful of Test grounds," said the report's co-author, Professor Rob Wilson."While significant profits have been posted in isolated cases over the past 10 years, they are exceptions to the rule. "Without ECB support and income from The Hundred, it is questionable whether some counties could survive even for a single season."A new Financial Performance Index ranks clubs based on their results on and off the field for the 10 years between 2014 and 2023 with Surrey, who host the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, leading the way, while Leicestershire are bottom of the table. Counties hosting Hundred teams Yorkshire - Northern SuperchargersLancashire - Manchester OriginalsNottinghamshire - Trent RocketsWarwickshire - Birmingham PhoenixGlamorgan - Welsh FireHampshire - Southern BraveSurrey - Oval InvinciblesMiddlesex - London Spirit 'They must work together' The sale of equity in the eight Hundred franchises is expected raise in the region of £520m which will be shared within the county England captain Michael Vaughan, who has written the foreword to the report, is calling on the first-class counties to work together to create a sustainable model."The Hundred money allows the 18 first-class counties to look to the future rather than simply survive from one summer to the next," he said."I would like to see counties being transparent with each other and sharing knowledge about what works for them. "Sometimes petty rivalries prevent that from happening and divisions between the Test host counties and the others develop."While revenue from The Hundred will offer many counties a lifeline, Professor Wilson believes the future of the domestic game is far from secure."This report raises questions about the long-term viability of the county model," he said."Investment in The Hundred may provide some medium-term relief, but only if invested strategically and to build infrastructure." Key time to develop disability cricket The report also calls for The Hundred to be used to develop disability cricket by giving counties the funding to provide more opportunities to play the game."Key to disability cricket's development will be linking it into The Hundred as it continues to develop and attract players, fans and volunteers to the game," said former England Physical Disability cricket captain Iain Nairn MBE."The ECB needs to ensure that, all counties can provide opportunity for disabled cricketers to participate on both a grassroots and elite level - The Hundred appears to be a great format to drive fresh engagement."
