The underdogs of the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest are the real heroes. They do it for the love of the game.
When you picture the 4th of July, most people think of fireworks. That's "the big show," right? For some, sure. But for others, it's all about Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, held every year on the Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York. It's a truly American spectacle, watching people eat for sport — shoving as many hot dogs down their throats as they can, not due to hunger or for taste, but simply out of pure competition. And while it's impressive to watch men like 17-time winner Joey Chestnut (who ate 70 ½ hot dogs this year), and women like 11-time winner Miki Sudo (who scarfed down 33) eat more in 10 minutes than should be humanly possible, what's more impressive is the competitors near the end of the table. That's right, we're talking about those who are just there for the love of the game. Every year, the competition puts the men and women who are coming into the competition with the best records — the big dogs, so to speak — in the middle of the table, with, well, the underdogs toward the end. Those are the competitors who are there to try their best, but, barring something unthinkable, aren't likely to unseat someone who's won 10 or more times. Let's hear it for the underdogs Take competitor Cherish Brown, for example. The Ohio native earned a wild-card spot to compete in her third consecutive 4th of July contest. Ahead of the event, she told WFFT-TV, "I'm really always looking to improve personally, rather than beat anybody at the table." Brown added, "I can't really control what they're going to do. If they can eat 15-20 hot dogs, that's great for them, but I'm not going to punish myself if I can't eat that many. I'm just there to have a good time, and try to do better than last year." She finished this year's competition in 12th place, having eaten six hot dogs in 10 minutes, but we hope that didn't dampen her day. Later, in the men's competition, Indiana native Cameron Meade made his Nathan's debut, eating 20 ¾ hot dogs to finish in 15th place. Earlier this week, he told NBC Chicago he was inspired to participate in eating competitions after his friends were impressed by how much he ate at his university's dining hall. And though he came in last in his division, he's positioned well for next year — after all, he can only go up from here. No, these underdogs didn't win in the end, but we appreciate what they're doing all the same. Underdogs like Brown and Meade are not there because they expect to win, they're just there because they love doing what they do: Eating an ungodly number of hot dogs on a hot day, just because they can. In any sport — including competitive eating — not every player on the field can be the MVP, especially when competing against legends like Chestnut and Sudo. Watching them is a good reminder that perfectionism, like the leftover buns on the boardwalk, is for the birds, and if you have a dream, you should chase it. You don't have to be perfect, you just have to love what you do.

So grab some popcorn, gather your loved ones, and let's explore the ultimate patriotic movie lineup! 1. Independence Day (1996) No 4th of July movie list is complete without Independence Day , the iconic sci-fi blockbuster directed by Roland Emmerich. Starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman, this film follows humanity's fight against an alien invasion, culminating in a rousing speech by President Whitmore that's become a cultural touchstone. Why It's Perfect for the 4th: The movie's climactic battle takes place on July 4th, symbolizing unity and resilience—core themes of Independence Day. It's a crowd-pleaser that blends action, humor, and patriotism. Fun Fact: President Whitmore's speech was inspired by Shakespeare's Henry V 'St. Crispin's Day' speech. Available on streaming platforms like Disney+ and Amazon Prime. 2. The Patriot (2000) For a dose of historical drama, The Patriot , directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Mel Gibson, is a must-watch. Gibson plays Benjamin Martin, a reluctant hero who joins the American Revolutionary War to protect his family and fight for freedom. Why It's Perfect for the 4th: Set during the American Revolution, the film captures the sacrifices and triumphs of the fight for independence. Its themes of courage and liberty resonate deeply on July 4th. Fun Fact: While the film takes creative liberties, it's inspired by real-life figures like Francis Marion, the 'Swamp Fox.' Fun Fact: The movie inspired a generation of history enthusiasts, and the National Archives even created an exhibit debunking its myths. Stream on Disney+ or rent on Apple TV. 5. Forrest Gump (1994) Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump is a heartwarming journey through American history. Its message of resilience is perfect for Independence Day reflection. Fun Fact: The famous bench scenes were filmed in Savannah, Georgia, and the bench is now in a museum. Tom Hanks based Forrest's accent on the real-life accent of Michael Conner Humphreys, who played young Forrest. Viewing Tip: Ideal for a cozy family night—have tissues ready! Available on Paramount+ and Amazon Prime. 6. Hidden Figures (2016) Hidden Figures , directed by Theodore Melfi, tells the true story of three African-American women—Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson—who played pivotal roles at NASA during the 1960s space race. Why It's Perfect for the 4th: This film celebrates American innovation and the unsung heroes who broke barriers, embodying the ideals of equality and progress central to Independence Day. Fun Fact: The real Katherine Johnson lived to 101 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. The film's set was so accurate that NASA employees praised its authenticity. Viewing Tip: Watch with aspiring scientists or anyone who loves inspiring true stories. Stream on Disney+ or rent on YouTube. 7. Jaws (1975) Steven Spielberg's Jaws might not scream 'patriotic,' but this thriller, set in a small American beach town during the 4th of July weekend, captures the community spirit of summer celebrations. Why It's Perfect for the 4th: The film's setting ties directly to Independence Day, and its story of ordinary people facing a crisis reflects American grit and teamwork. Fun Fact: The mechanical shark, nicknamed 'Bruce,' malfunctioned so often that Spielberg relied on suspenseful camera work, creating the film's iconic tension. It was the first summer blockbuster! Zak Brown Shows Off $3 Million McLaren Speedtail at British GP
Zak Brown Shows Off $3 Million McLaren Speedtail at British GP originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Zak Brown might run McLaren's F1 team, but he just reminded everyone he's also a supercar fanatic with a garage that would make even the grid's biggest stars jealous. Advertisement Ahead of the 2025 British GP weekend, Brown arrived in the paddock driving his breathtaking McLaren Speedtail, a hypercar worth an eye-watering $3 million. It turned plenty of heads as fans gathered in Forecourt to snap photos and catch a glimpse of this ultra-rare machine and the McLaren boss. Only 106 Speedtails were ever built, making it one of the rarest McLarens on the planet. With a top speed of 250 mph (403 km/h), it's also the fastest road car McLaren has ever produced. Under the sleek bodywork lies a hybrid powertrain pushing out a staggering 1,035 horsepower. Even among the elite world of hypercars, the Speedtail is in a league of its own. Zak Brown during the Miami Grand Casey-Imagn Images Photographer Kym Illman captured the moment and summed it up perfectly: 'Zak's got speed.' It's a fitting phrase, considering Brown oversees McLaren's charge in F1 where they're currently giving Red Bull something to think about. Advertisement The British GP is always a showcase of style, speed, and prestige, and Brown rolling up in a multi-million dollar Speedtail only added to the spectacle. It was also a reminder that for many in the paddock, racing isn't just business, it's a lifelong passion for anything fast, rare, and beautiful. If McLaren's F1 weekend is half as quick as Brown's road car, Silverstone's crowd could be in for something special.
