City on short fuse over power cuts: BJP, SAD leaders
Nidhi.Bhardwaj@timesofindia.com
Ludhiana: With power cuts disrupting life in the city, leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) attacked the ruling party for failing to tackle the problem.
They said that the entire city, including poll-bound west constituency, faced the problem of power cuts. In a few areas, the power cuts were 10 to 12 hours long, the leaders said, adding that the AAP government and Powercom had been exposed.
Senior BJP leader and west constituency in-charge Avinash Rai Khanna held a press conference on the issue at the BJP election office in Khanna on Saturday. Addressing mediapersons, Khanna said, "Being in-charge of this constituency, I meet people daily, and they have serious problems due to power cuts."
He added that residents of areas like Sarabha Nagar, Rajguru Nagar, Rishi Nagar, Sunet, and SBS Nagar, which fall under the west constituency, endure 10 to 12 hours of power cuts.
In certain constituencies, there were 18-hour long power cuts as well, he said.
Khanna questioned AAP candidate, Sanjeev Arora, saying, "The AAP candidate claims that he is like a second CM and any work can be done in the city on his direction but to date, he has never raised this issue and responded to people about government's failure to fulfill its promise of providing 24/7 electricity supply."
He said that the Powercom department did not have adequate staff to check infrastructure-related complaints and even lines needed replacement. Elaborating on issues faced by the industry, Khanna said, "The industry was promised power supply at Rs 5 per unit, but they still are getting it at Rs 9 to Rs 10 per unit. Even then, there are power cuts for a long duration. Now, when there is no power supply, they are using generators and extra money is being spent on diesel.
"
Meanwhile, SAD candidate, Parupkar Singh Ghumman, also attacked the ruling party for creating problems due to power cuts. "I also live in the west constituency and I can feel the pain of people living here and in other areas. If the poll-bound west constituency is not getting uninterrupted power supply, what can be expected in other areas?" He said.
Ghumman pointed out that regular power cuts had precipitated a water crisis as well as MC tubewells would not work. He said that during a meeting with residents at Professor Colony, he found that people at the end of their tether because of the power cuts that they staged a protest at night.

'Shocked... I've Been A Dedicated Worker': BJP MLA Quits After Ramachander Picked As Telangana Chief
Last Updated: Raja Singh said there are many capable senior leaders who have tirelessly worked for the growth of the BJP and have the strength, credibility, and connect to lead the party forward Controversial BJP MLA T Raja Singh on Monday resigned from the party, expressing 'disappointment" over Ramchander Rao being appointed as the Telangana BJP chief. Questioning the choice of state president, Singh said such a choice raises serious doubts about the direction and not only undermines the sacrifices of grassroots workers but risks pushing the party into avoidable setbacks. In a letter to outgoing Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy, the BJP MLA also said there are many capable senior leaders, MLAs, and MPs within the state who have tirelessly worked for the growth of the BJP and who have the strength, credibility, and connect to lead the party forward. 'Unfortunately, it appears that some individuals, driven by personal interests, have misled the central leadership and taken decisions by running the show from behind the curtain," he stated. 'I have been a dedicated Karyakarta, elected three times in a row with the blessings of the people and support of the party. But today. I find it difficult to stay silent or pretend that all is well, This is not about personal ambition, this letter reflects the pain and frustration of lakhs of loyal BJP Karyakartas and supporters who feel sidelined and unheard. We had the best opportunity in years to bring the BJP to power in Telangana. But that hope is slowly being replaced by disappointment and frustration, not because of the people, but because of the leadership being placed at the helm," he said. Though he may be stepping away from the party, the Goshamahal legislator said he remains fully committed to the ideology of Hindutva and the service of Hindu Dharma and the people of his constituency. AAP protest in Rajouri Garden, demands sacking of Delhi Minister Sirsa over ‘derogatory' remark
The protest came a day after Sirsa said, 'I want to tell Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi and AAP that you can protest as much as you want for Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, but we will not allow them to stay in this nation… We will not get involved in any such politics that compromise the lives of people in Delhi.' He further alleged that 'they commit crimes everywhere' and 'their establishments will be demolished.' Reacting sharply, AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha told PTI, 'The BJP is demolishing slums for days now, and Minister Sirsa crossed a line by calling the residents Rohingyas. Many of these people are from UP and Bihar. The people of Purvanchal are hurt. We demand that Sirsa apologise immediately or the chief minister must remove him from his post.' Joining the protest, AAP leader Vinay Mishra said, 'This is the same person who stayed in slums before elections. Now, he insults those very people. The BJP's hatred for Purvanchalis is not new. His statement will have consequences not only in Delhi but also in Bihar elections.' Sharing videos of the protest on X, AAP wrote, 'The BJP has been calling brothers and sisters of Purvanchal Bangladeshi Rohingyas. Now, Minister Sirsa once again made a hateful statement against Purvanchalis. Today, AAP leaders, workers, and the Purvanchal community surrounded his residence in protest.' BJP mum on growing proximity between Bangladesh and Pakistan: Owaisi
'They keep talking about Bangladeshi people settling in India illegally. What are Union Home Minister Amit Shah, intelligence agencies and BSF doing?' he questioned. Addressing a rally in Parbhani on Sunday, the Hyderabad MP said BJP members seem unable to comprehend the situation unfolding on the borders neighbouring India. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, June 30 (PTI) AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has alleged that the BJP was making a hue and cry over the influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in India while ignoring the growing proximity between Bangladesh and Pakistan and the construction of an airbase by China. Owaisi claimed that after the interim government under Mohd Yunus assumed charge, the Navies of Bangladesh and Pakistan are conducting joint exercises. 'Pakistani leaders are meeting their Bangladeshi counterparts. China is building an airbase on the Bangladesh border. If war breaks out, it will expand to three fronts. Without reflecting on these threats, BJP members keep talking about illegal immigration from Bangladesh,' he said. Owaisi said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had to scrap two GRs on the introduction of the third language in schools owing to strong opposition by the people who supported the precedence of the Marathi language in the state. The Hyderabad MP said diversity is the identity and hallmark of India. 'The RSS says India will have one language, culture, and ideology. If that happens, India will become a dictator state. We will not let that happen. India represents various hues, and we will ensure it remains that way,' he added. Owaisi also extended his support to Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange, who has been agitating for the OBC quota. PTI AW NSK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
