Gayton praises son's success: 'You grew up seeing me in jail'
The Minister of Sport has spoken about having eight children – from six women – including the advocate who helped him during his army robbery prison sentence.
In an emotional Facebook post, Gayton McKenzie praised his eldest son, Calvin Le John, for his successful acquisition of SuperSport United.
The 51-year-old shared how Calvin was born mere hours after he was convicted of armed robbery in 1996.
He posted of his son: 'You grew up seeing me through jail bars. You never visited me on the weekends of the home games of Siwelele because you and your grandpa would go and watch the games religiously just like me and him when I was young. Gayton McKenzie has praised his son Calvin Le John for purchasing SuperSport United. Calvin plans to rename the club Siwelele FC.

'I remember you told me that it brings you closer to me emotionally. Knowing that you're doing the same thing I did with my father and your grandfather.
Despite not having his father around, Gayton claims that Calvin Le John – who changed his last name – was a 'good kid with good intentions'.
He continued: 'You suffered not growing up without your Dad. I thank God for a powerful mother who stood in the gap. You are the main reason why I behaved better. Because I wanted to come out and didn't wanna see you grow up through jail bars forever.
After Gayton was freed and established his political party, the Patriotic Alliance, Calvin stepped up to take control of the family businesses. He has been at the helm, ever since.
Of his decision to purchase the club, which they hope to bring to Bloemfontein, Gayton added: 'I agree fully with your purchase of SuperSport [United]. Because we both stood at the deathbed of my father and your grandad and we promised that we will always look after Siwelele.
'Siwelele is not a team, it's our Heritage, our culture, and part of our soul'.
Gayton McKenzie has stayed mum about the identities of the six women who birthed his eight children, one of them being Calvin Le John.
However, it is public knowledge that he wed lawyer, Nicolette Joubert, in 2003.
This came after Nicolette was sent to investigate Gayton and others' allegations of corruption at the Grootvlei Prison involving prison gangs, warders, and inmates. The exposé became international news, and Gayton was named one of the 'Grootvlei Four.'
The couple had two daughters together.
A decade later, Gayton hinted that he had wronged his wife, whom he had since divorced.
He tweeted: 'I hurt my ex-wife indescribably. But a bad word about me will never be heard by strangers or our kids, sheer class always.'

South Africa's Jordan Pepper claims 1st Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters win
The son of former South African Touring Car driver Iain, Edenvale-born Jordan Pepper, is enjoying a purple patch in his racing career. A former winner of the Bathurst 12 Hour with Bentley and the GTWC America Championship, Pepper's current contract with TGI Lamborghini Team by GRT sees him competing in both the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) and selected endurance-racing events, in a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2. Sharing a car with Luca Engstler and Mirko Bortolotti, Pepper's impressive current form saw him claim victory at the 2025 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps on June 29. Buoyed by this success, the former VW Polo Cup and 2014 VW Scirocco Cup champion arrived at the fourth round of this year's DTM Championship, held at the Norisring street circuit in Nuremberg, Germany, filled with confidence. Starting Race 1 from pole position, Pepper's impressive early-race pace came in handy after a slow mandatory pit stop threatened to scupper the team's efforts. With his proud father in attendance and family, including his sister, Tasmin, herself an accomplished racing driver, watching from home, Jordan held off Thomas Preining and Maro Engel to claim his maiden DTM victory. 'What an unbelievably emotional moment for me,' Pepper said. 'I am incredibly proud and still cannot really believe it. The final laps seemed to last forever. However, I gave it my all and remained focused right through to the finish.' Significantly, the win vaulted Pepper into second place in the 2025 DTM Driver's Championship, behind Lucas Auer, who drives for Mercedes-AMG Team Landgraf. As a reminder, Pepper's compatriot and fellow former VW Polo Cup driver, Sheldon van der Merwe, became the first South African to win the DTM Driver's title, claiming the 2012 title with BMW. Don't get taken in by these official-looking extortionists
Criminals are always looking for new ways to con people into parting with their money. The latest ploy involves tricking people in Gqeberha into believing they have been linked to some or other criminal activity and convincing them to pay up to avoid arrest or to click on a fake app, which leads to their bank accounts being cleared out. Fear of being arrested for something they did not do drives most of the victims to quickly pay to make the 'crime' go away. Though the police are investigating the extortion racket, this is little solace for the victims as the money is unlikely to be recovered. The scammers, dressed in customs or police uniforms, WhatsApp video call the victims and inform them that they have been implicated in crimes such as drug smuggling or counterfeit documents, money laundering and even murder. In some cases, they appear to be sitting in a police van, with the sound of police radios in the background. It looks and sounds authentic. The scare tactic convinces the terrified victims to hand over money or provide their banking details and log on to fake police apps, only to find later that their bank accounts have been emptied. One man lost all the money he had — R36,000 — after getting a call from a con artist who said he was a 'sergeant from the Pretoria police station', telling him he had been linked to someone involved in sex trafficking, money laundering and murder. He was then called back on WhatsApp video, where he saw a man in full police uniform with South African and police flags behind him. He followed various instructions and an hour after the call ended discovered his bank account had been cleared out. Another victim was told that she had been linked to a parcel containing drugs in Cape Town. Worried and confused, she paid the crooks R23,000. These criminals use fear to achieve their goal. Combined with the use of police uniforms and equipment, it all seems real and makes it easy to manipulate people into paying up. We urge people to drop the call and immediately call an official police number to check whether the claims are real should they ever find themselves being extorted in this way. And whatever you do, never, ever give your banking details or other personal information over the phone or after clicking on links sent to you by unknown people. The Herald

What time is kick off for Springboks' second Test?
The Springboks will be looking for a vastly improved performance against Italy after producing a rather indifferent display to kick off their Test season with a hard-fought victory at Loftus this past weekend. It will be hoped that some of the 'rust' has now been shaken off, and that the Springboks will be back to their best for the second Test against the Azzurri in Gqeberha. Kick off is once again at 17:10, and it should be remembered that this Test will be shown 'live' on both SuperSport and SABC. Rassie Erasmus said the selectors would have to do some hard thinking before naming the second Test team: 'We have to pick nine guys to go with the others and we have to decide whether they start or come off the bench. Damian De Allende has a bit of a hamstring (strain) but luckily, we don't have any (serious) injuries, just a few bruised egos.' The Springboks looked like they might have broken Italy's resistance with their fifth try at the start of the second half, but the visitors finished the game in fine fashion. 'It was a very frustrating game,' said Erasmus. 'We knew they would man up, and they certainly manned up in most departments; scrums, mauling, defence, attack – it was a proper Test match. 'When we were 28-3 up and we scored that try was disallowed for obstruction, I thought we might have them, but then we lost some momentum. 'I don't think we have too many excuses and it certainly makes the selection for next week interesting – they could easily have come back into it at the end. They performed really well – we definitely tried to impose our game on them, and they didn't allow it. 'The frustration was not only about not dominating, but also that the game was stop-start, stop-start. It felt like we didn't get any intensity in the second half. 'The positives are that we won; that we scored tricks even with a maul that didn't function, even with a breakdown that wasn't great on attack, even with a counterattack that wasn't awesome, we still scored six tries.'
