Mandya: A physical disability does not signal the end of life. In fact, specially-abled individuals are gifted with a unique power and resilience by God, said deputy commissioner Kumara, highlighting the extraordinary potential of differently-abled individuals.
He was speaking after inaugurating a free assistive device distribution programme held at Gurubhavan, organised jointly by the district administration, zilla panchayat, ALIMCO regional centre (Bengaluru), and the department for empowerment of differently-abled and senior citizens. The initiative aimed to provide mobility aids and assistive devices free of cost to specially-abled persons and senior citizens, enabling them to lead more independent and dignified lives.
"Make full use of these opportunities to rise to positions of respect," he urged beneficiaries. He called on society to foster a supportive and inclusive environment, avoiding language or behaviour that could diminish the confidence of the specially-abled. "Encouragement is crucial. Collective efforts are needed to ensure their full participation and development," he added. Zilla panchayat CEO KR Nandini said the district administration is committed to enabling a dignified life for the specially-abled.
She further said under govt of India's Rashtriya Vayoshree Yojana, senior citizens above 60 years of age are being provided with assistive devices to enhance their quality of life, and encouraged eligible elders to make use of the scheme.

DC urges enrolment of SSLC non-passers to prevent dropouts

Mandya: With the SSLC exam-3 scheduled from July 5 to 12, deputy commissioner Kumara has stressed the urgent need to enrol students who fail the SSLC examinations into Class 10 to prevent them from discontinuing their education. Presiding over a preparatory meeting at the zilla panchayat here on Thursday, Kumara noted that 4,094 students in the district failed the SSLC exam, of which 3,845 have registered for the upcoming SSLC exam-3. However, 249 students have not yet enrolled, prompting the deputy commissioner to call for special outreach efforts. "Many students who fail tend to drop out and take up jobs. We must bring them back to school, enrol them to Class 10, and prepare them for the next year's exam. This will give them a second chance at success," he said. He directed education officials to compile a list of failed students, convince parents, and facilitate re-admission. Special attention is to be paid to those who have not registered for the exam, ensuring they are not left behind. To improve long-term results, headmasters of schools with less than 50% pass rates will be called for a meeting, and a workshop will be organised to strengthen academic performance and teaching methods. Kumara also reviewed preparations for the exam, which will be held at 12 centres across the district. High school headmasters have been appointed as chief supervisors to ensure smooth and transparent conduct. Route officers will oversee the safe transportation of question papers, with police security and CCTV surveillance in place at all centres. Live webcasting will be monitored directly from the deputy commissioner's office.

Praying The World Halts Climate Change? There's Now A Catholic Mass For That

Vatican City: A new rite published by the Vatican on Thursday will allow priests to celebrate a Mass to exhort Catholics to exercise care for the Earth, in the latest push by the 1.4 billion-member global Church to address global climate change. For centuries, Catholic priests have been able to celebrate special Masses to pray for their country, give thanks after a harvest or ask God to end a natural disaster. The new "Mass for the care of creation," prepared by two Vatican offices, allows priests to pray that Catholics will "lovingly care" for creation and "learn to live in harmony with all creatures". "This Mass ... calls us to be faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us - not only in daily choices and public policies, but also in our prayer, our worship, and our way of living in the world," said Cardinal Michael Czerny, presenting the rite at a Vatican press conference on Thursday. Catholic priests have the possibility of offering Masses for a range of special needs. The new rite, approved by Pope Leo, is the 50th option offered by the Vatican. The late Pope Francis was a firm proponent of care for creation. He was the first pope to embrace the scientific consensus about climate change and urged nations to reduce their carbon emissions in line with the 2015 Paris climate accord. "Pope Leo clearly will carry this pastoral and civil concern forward," Rev. Bruce Morrill, a Jesuit priest and expert on Catholic liturgy at Vanderbilt University in the U.S., told Reuters. "This new thematic Mass indicates the Church's recognition of the serious threats human-caused climate change is now fully realising," he said. The new Vatican rite comes two days after Catholic bishops from Asia, Africa and Latin America called on global governments to do more to address climate change, publishing a joint appeal that was the first of its kind.
