CPI(M) condemns police clampdown, arrests in Karedu village
In a statement on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), CPI(M) State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao accused the government of creating fear and confusion among villagers to extract land consent by coercion, despite local farmers' resistance.
The revenue officials had reportedly entered the village and started collecting Aadhaar numbers, land documents, and passbooks from each household. When villagers refused to comply, they were allegedly intimidated.
During the standoff, leaders of the Rythu Sangham and Agricultural Workers' Union, including Kumar, Pullayya, and G. Venkateswarlu, were arrested and taken to Ulavapadu police station, according to CPI(M).
The CPI(M) leader alleged that Section 30 of the Police Act was imposed across the entire Ulavapadu Mandal, and police posts were set up surrounding Karedu village, effectively placing the village under siege.
'False cases are being filed against farmer leaders. People are being prevented from holding meetings. All of this is part of a plan to illegally seize land by instilling fear,' he alleged.
CPI(M) demanded immediate withdrawal of the police siege, release of the arrested farmer and union leaders, respect for the Gram Sabha resolution opposing land acquisition, and withdrawal of the land acquisition notification for the IndoSol project. He said the public resistance would be intensified if these demands are not met and called the current actions unconstitutional and undemocratic.

'One of the worst orders': In a 1st, SC bars HC judge from hearing criminal cases
NEW DELHI: Enraged by what it termed "one of the worst and most erroneous orders we have come across", Supreme Court has pulled up Allahabad HC's Justice Prashant Kumar for allowing criminal proceedings in a civil dispute case. Questioning Kumar's competence in deciding criminal cases, SC, in an unprecedented order, directed he shouldn't be given any criminal case for adjudication till he retires, and must be made to sit with a seasoned judge of the HC in a division bench. "The judge has not only cut a sorry figure for himself but has made a mockery of justice. We are at our wits' end to understand what's wrong with judiciary at the level of HC," Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said. SC: Passing of such absurd & erroneous orders unpardonable SC said at times "we are left wondering whether such orders are passed on some extraneous considerations or it is sheer ignorance of law. Whatever it be, passing of such absurd and erroneous orders is unpardonable". It said the erroneous order was not an exception as Justice Kumar had passed similarly unpardonable ones over a period of time, which left them with no option but to take the extreme step. The case pertains to sale of goods and payment between two businessmen. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo The seller had delivered goods worth Rs 52.34 lakh out of which he was paid Rs 47.75 lakh. As the balance amount was not paid, he lodged a criminal case, leading to the other businessman to move HC for quashing the case. While allowing criminal proceedings in the case, a single bench of Justice Kumar justified his decision, saying that the complainant would not be in a position to pursue the civil litigation as it will take years and he will have to put more money to pursue the litigation. "To be more precise, it would seem like good money chasing bad money. If this court allows the matter to be referred to civil court on account of civil dispute between the parties, it would amount to travesty of justice and O.P. no.2 (complainant) would suffer irreparable loss and he might even not be in a position to emerge from the financial constraints to pursue the matter," he had said. Expressing shock over the stand taken by the judge the SC bench said, "Is it the understanding of the high court that ultimately if the accused is convicted, the trial court would award him the balance amount? The observations recorded... are shocking. It is an extremely sad day for one and all to read the observations... It was expected of the high court to know the well-settled position of law that in cases of civil dispute a complainant cannot be permitted to resort to criminal proceedings as the same would amount to abuse of process of law. "It was expected of the HC to understand the nature of the allegations levelled in the complaint. In substance the HC has said in so many words that the criminal proceedings instituted by the complainant in a case of pure civil dispute is justified because it may take considerable time for the complainant to recover the balance amount by preferring a civil suit," it said. The bench quashed the order and directed that the case be reconsidered by the HC but by another judge. "The chief justice of the high court shall immediately withdraw the present criminal determination from the judge concerned. The chief justice shall make the judge concerned sit in a division bench with a seasoned senior judge of the HC. We further direct that the judge concerned shall not be assigned any criminal determination, till he demits office. If at all he is to be made to sit as a single judge, he shall not be assigned any criminal determination," the apex court said.

SP: Use of police force to stop PDA pathshalas won't work
1 2 Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said using police force to stop PDA pathshalas being organised by his party cadre will not work and asked the UP CM to visit these pathshalas for a first-hand stock of the ground realities. Akhilesh's reaction came in response to FIRs lodged against SP cadres for holding PDA pathshalas in UP villages where govt primary schools have been shut or paired by the UP govt. "PDA pathshala police se rukne wali nahi hai (Using police to stop PDA Pathshala will not work) Akhilesh said. SP volunteers will continue with the PDA pathshalas and tuitions until govt sends teachers to the schools that have been shut or paired, Akhilesh told reporters at Janeshwar Mishra Park in Lucknow — where he paid floral tributes to the socialist leader on his birth anniversary on Tuesday. Earlier SP chief had accused govt of closing 26,012 govt primary schools and pairing another 5,000 schools. He described it as a design to deprive the PDA community of their right to education. He had called retired teachers and graduate volunteers from among SP cadres to hold PDA pathshalas in villages where schools have been closed. Recently FIRs were lodged against some individuals running PDA pathshalas for illegally entering closed school campuses. He said govt has already accepted that schools have been shut and paired and thereby have accepted that their decision was wrong. He said if govt was reconsidering to recall its earlier decision, then all primary schools that have been shut, must be reopened. 'BJP netas have encroached wetlands' Lucknow: Accusing BJP functionaries of having usurped ponds in every UP district, Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said govt can conduct a verification of land registries to confirm his charge. "They (BJP netas) have not spared a single pond. All wetlands have been usurped by them. Anyone can get the land registry documents from Ayodhya, Varanasi and Lucknow and verify this, he said. He said BJP has machines to print fake voter identity and Aadhaar cards and cited an incident that happened in Gursahaiganj during the elections for chairman of town area. "The BJP men connived with the police and the district magistrate to set up a machine to print fake Aadhaar cards. When they were intercepted, they fled leaving behind stacks of fake Aadhaar cards. Some of them are with us even till date," Akhilesh said.

Brother duo from Bihar caught in Surat for getting Aadhaar forged to get accommodation, land job
Surat police have nabbed a man and his younger brother — both natives of Bihar — for allegedly procuring Aadhaar cards with a fake name to get a house and land a job at a diamond factory in Surat. While the elder brother was produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to a two-day police remand, the younger one, a juvenile, was sent to a children's remand home in Katargam. Special Operations Group officials had on Monday evening reached a flat on the third floor of Shiv Heritage Apartment in Surat's Sagrampura area, acting on a tip-off about the accused. They found two persons, who identified themselves as Pradeep Maurya and Pankaj Maurya and claimed that they hailed from Bihar's Katihar district. The duo said they were working at a diamond factory in Katargam. However, they soon confessed to having forged Aadhaar cards. The elder brother was identified as Mohammed Afridi Wajidali (25). The younger brother is 17-year-old, officers said. The accused said they had been facing issues while they were searching for an accommodation. They said that when they found a house in Sagrampura, they were allegedly told that the owner only rents it out to people from the Hindu community. The accused then got Aadhaar cards made with fake Hindu names and started to live in the flat on rent. They also allegedly used the same Aadhaar card to land a job at the factory, officers said.. Police arrested Wajidali under BNS sections 319 (cheating by personation), 336(2) (forgery), 336(3)(forgery with the intent to cheat), 338 (forgery of valuable security, wills and related documents), 340 (using forged documents as genuine). Talking to The Indian Express, Athwalines police inspector H K Solanki said, 'We have arrested the elder brother and the younger one was sent to a children's remand home. They hail from Bihar and were staying in Surat and working at a diamond unit for the past one year. They had got documents forged to get a place to stay and a job in the city. We are trying to dig out more information. We are also trying to ascertain if they had any other motive.'
