Thunderous applause, packed stands and Neeraj Chopra victory: Bengaluru witnesses home champion's class and rare athletics celebration

It was Neeraj's tournament, his home turf, and his gold medal — witnessed by a surreal, near-unbelievable crowd, a rarity for athletics in India. But then again, Neeraj Chopra himself is rare. Let's savour him, celebrate him, and hope he inspires the next generation. read more

Is India ready for an athletics revolution — not just on the track, but off it as well? Neeraj Chopra has tried, with the support of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), JSW Sports, and World Athletics, through the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025. Lending his own name to underlines the two-time Olympic medallist's deep understanding of his brand value and the impact it can create.

But the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
And if you were in the famous West Block Stand of the Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru or anywhere else in the arena on Saturday, you'd know: it was one very tasty pudding indeed.

The organisers, who seemingly did not do enough outdoor advertisement and activation activities before the competition, did an excellent job during the one-day historic track and field event as Neeraj Chopra and a group of elite athletes including former Olympic champions and record holders, lit up Bengaluru to deliver a rare thrilling night of athletics in India.
Neeraj delivers on his big night in India
That Neeraj, surprise, surprise, won the competition with a throw of 86.18m was the icing on the cake. He started with a foul, but guess what, he only needed one more throw. His second attempt of 82.99m put him in the lead, surpassing Rumesh Pathirage's 81.90m in the strong 12-man field.
Rumesh responded with an 84.34m effort on his third attempt and celebrated wildly, arms flung in the air, turning back to revel in the moment in front of the Indian crowd in the North Block.
Neeraj's third attempt? A mind-boggling 86.18m, delivered amid cold and windy conditions in Bengaluru.

It was bewildering not just because Neeraj responded with a perfect throw immediately after being challenged for the gold on home turf, but because he has an uncanny ability to deliver his best when it matters most. To crystallise his clutch ability, here's a piece of trivia — Neeraj hasn't finished outside the top two in any top-level competition since 2021.
How 'Mr Consistent' Neeraj does it time and time again is less of a mystery and more a testament to his unbeatable mental strength, genius, and relentless hard work.
Since the third attempt, 'Mr YouTube' of Kenya, Julius Yego, was the only one who came close to Neeraj with a throw of 84.51m and Neeraj replied with 84.07m in the fifth round, but there was no real challenge.
The real challenge probably was how the Indians would take to a historic athletics event in India. The magnitude of the event cannot be summarised in such few words, but India isn't the greatest example of a sporting nation.
Those fears were allayed pretty early, as 14,593 fans turned up at the stadium — most of them already in their seats two hours before the event began, humming along to the rap songs of Haryana's Dhanda Nyoliwala and dancing to the moves of The Vixens Crew.

Packed stands & flying sears: Bengaluru bows to Neeraj Chopra & co

Bengaluru: Sree Kanteerava Stadium buzzed with anticipation Saturday, even as it was guarded tightly than ever in the wake of the tragedy that claimed 11 lives just 2km away, outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium. As the clock edged toward the 7pm start of the maiden Neeraj Chopra Classic, fans began streaming in almost two hours early, clamouring for the best vantage points in the north lower and upper stands, just behind the javelin runway. But first came the cops to ensure a foolproof security cordon, with even a deputy commissioner of police going around the stands to take stock of the arrangements. The excitement was palpable and artists showcasing Karnataka's folk dance forms such as Yakshagana, Dollu Kunitha, Kamsale and Pata Kunitha entertained people outside the arena. Scores of schoolchildren filled the stands, making their presence felt by waving flags and jumping up and down whenever they spotted Chopra. The previously empty stands soon filled with colourful javelins, ranging from fluorescent green to bright orange. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Arthritis? The evening's events began with entertainment designed to get fans in the groove. First up was The Vixens Crew, a city-based all-women dance team. This was followed by Haryanvi singer Dhanda Nyoliwala, a chart-topper on Spotify's top 200 list, known for his viral songs such as "Up to U" and "Russian Bandana". Soon, all 12 athletes joined in to begin their warm-up session and take a few practice throws. The fans, who filled most of the stands, brought back memories of Indian Super League football matches between Bengaluru FC and Kerala Blasters. Although the main event was yet to start, the appetiser itself delighted the crowd when chief organiser and lead contestant Chopra landed his first practice throw close to the 80-metre mark. Fans experienced world-class athletics as they celebrated with cheering sticks and special flags. By the time the first javelin pierced the grass on the cool evening, 14,593 athletics enthusiasts were cheering for the star-studded line-up. A huge banner reading "From Bengaluru with love to every athlete" perfectly summed up the mood; the fact that Chopra won the gold medal was a fitting finale.

India 'A' men's hockey team leaves for Netherlands for upcoming tour of Europe

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 5 (ANI): The India 'A' Men's Hockey team left for Eindhoven, Netherlands on Saturday morning for the Tour of Europe, scheduled from July 8 to July 20, 2025. Led by Captain Sanjay and Vice-Captain Moirangthem Rabichandra Singh, India 'A' will play eight matches in total across three cities in Europe. While India A will play two matches each against Ireland, France, and the Netherlands in Eindhoven (Netherlands), they will play one match each against England and Belgium in Amstelveen (Netherlands) and Antwerp (Belgium), respectively, as per a press release from Hockey India. These matches are expected to test the depth and readiness of players as the national setup looks to build a stronger talent pool for the Indian senior team. The India 'A' Captain, Sanjay, said, 'This tour will be a good testing ground for us to know our strengths and weaknesses. We have a good mix of seasoned players and young players, and the tour will provide us with strong competition to assess where they stand. This kind of international exposure will also help us strengthen our main team in the future and create a good bench strength in the long run.' Vice-Captain Moirangthem added, 'The tour will help the team understand the different dynamics and intensity of playing against top European teams in Europe. This exposure will also help some of the younger players experience hockey at a much different pace than they are used to in India. We hope this exposure will help us and the next generation of players improve in the long run.' With this tour, Hockey India aims to bolster the talent pool for the Indian Men's national team and provide international match time to the next generation of Indian hockey stars. The first match between India 'A' and Ireland will take place on July 8 at 21:30 IST. (ANI)
