Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart escalates contract standoff with team

Yahoo15-06-2025
Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Shemar Stewart went very public and escalated his contract standoff with the team at the onset of mandatory camp this week.
Speaking with reporters about his dissatisfaction with his contract standoff, Stewart said he was disappointed with how the Bengals are handling the whole situation and remained adamant that he won't practice until his rookie deal gets signed.

"I'm 100% right. It should be a no-brainer," Stewart said. "In Trey's case it should be a no brainer, too. … "I'm not asking for nothing y'all have never done before. But y'all (Bengals) just want to win arguments more than winning games in my opinion"

Previous reporting said the Bengals are attempting to change the language of how they void guarantees in contracts, starting with Stewart. The rookie and his reps, obviously, don't love that idea.
Both sides have taken some weird steps to this point. The Bengals choosing here and now to change precedent when edge rusher is already a problem area before a key season is odd. So, too, is Stewart not at least practicing while the contract stuff gets handled in the background, as most first-round picks do/are.

Right now, the interview seems good proof that Stewart will likely sit out of training camp later in the summer if the matter isn't resolved, too.

Bears GM Ryan Poles addresses recent contract extension

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles was recently signed to a contract extension that will align him with head coach Ben Johnson, for the foreseeable future, in an effort to establish a culture inside Halas Hall. As the team continued to have turnover at the general manager and head coaching positions, there was not clear alignment on both sides until now with Poles and Johnson as both are under contract through 2029. Speaking to the media for the first time since signing his extension, Poles explained how he feels the alignment with Johnson will go and how things should work between them. Wanting to just be present in his support for his new head coach, Poles is putting the team and organization first. "Contract that came out while we were on break, I'm not going to get into details on that," Poles said Tuesday. "I am excited about the alignment and stability that we have within our leadership group here. I have an unbelievable group of people that support me, believe in me, work with me that help drive what we're doing with our roster and the football team. My sole focus right now is supporting Ben, his coaching staff, our players, and our entire organization and our entire football operation." Getting Poles and Johnson lined up together should build faith and confidence in the organization from a player and fan perspective, but the results will have to be there, as well. The other side of the equation is that if the success doesn't come sooner than later, both Johnson and Poles could find themselves on the chopping block together. Mariners at Angels Prediction: Odds, expert picks, starting pitchers, betting trends and stats for July 24

Its Thursday, July 24 and the Mariners (54-48) are in Anaheim to begin a series against the Angels (49-53). Logan Evans is slated to take the mound for Seattle against Yusei Kikuchi for Los Angeles. Earlier this week the Mariners lost two of three to the white-hot Brewers. As has been the case for more than a year, Seattle's offense betrayed them scoring just three runs over the course of the series. Wednesday, the pitching struggled as well as Milwaukee pounded Seattle, 10-2. Luis Castillo was tagged for ten hits and six runs over just five innings and the M's offense totaled seven hits but plated just two in the lopsided loss. The Angels are back in SoCal following a six-game road trip to Philadelphia and New York. They took two of three from the Phillies but were swept by the Mets. Yesterday, Mike Trout cracked his 18th home run, but it was not enough as the Mets doubled up the Halos, 6-3. Lets dive into the matchup and find a sweat or two. Travis Hunter will 'flip-flop' between offense and defense during Jagaurs training camp

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a bold move in the 2025 NFL Draft, trading up to select two-way prospect Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall selection. In order to maximize Hunter's skill set, the team will allow the rookie to "flip-flop" between offense and defense during training camp. Jaguars head coach Liam Cohen said Wednesday that the team has mapped out Hunter's schedule for training camp, which includes some days where he will play both wide receiver and cornerback in a single practice, per ESPN. "You want to give him a couple days offense, a couple days defense, and then give him an opportunity to go flip-flop within the same practice and then that will kind of become the norm," Coen said after the Jaguars finished their first workout at the Miller Electric Center adjacent to EverBank Stadium. "... Every moment, every minute that he is in the building, it is accounted for and trying to make sure that we maximize his time, our time so that we can ultimately get the best outcome." That's a change from how the team approached Hunter's workload during offseason workouts. Hunter primarily appeared on offense during team activities in the offseason, though that was a calculated decision. The Jaguars wanted Hunter to get more familiar with the complexities of the team's offense — including its audibles and line checks — which led to the rookie getting more time at wide receiver initially. But the team wants to keep Hunter fresh on both sides of the ball moving forward, which is why he will spend time in both roles — sometimes in the same practice — during training camp. Cohen said the team learned during the offseason that allowing Hunter to focus on one role could take away from his ability to stay fresh at the other, which also played into the decision to move Hunter around during camp. Hunter's deployment as a rookie will be fascinating. While some NFL players have played both ways — see Hunter's college coach Deion Sanders — few have entered the NFL intent on playing both offense and defense. And while Sanders was able to do it during his career, he really only had one season in which he played major roles at cornerback and wide receiver. Hunter will be looking to play two positions immediately. He excelled in that role at Colorado, hauling in 15 touchdowns as a receiver and winning the Chuck Bednarik award for his prowess as a cornerback. But taking on that workload in the NFL will be a new challenge. The Jaguars knew that would be the case when the team traded up for Hunter. Now, it's up to the franchise to figure out the best way to maximize his potential.
