Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart escalates contract standoff with team

Yahoo15-06-2025
Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Shemar Stewart went very public and escalated his contract standoff with the team at the onset of mandatory camp this week.
Speaking with reporters about his dissatisfaction with his contract standoff, Stewart said he was disappointed with how the Bengals are handling the whole situation and remained adamant that he won't practice until his rookie deal gets signed.

"I'm 100% right. It should be a no-brainer," Stewart said. "In Trey's case it should be a no brainer, too. … "I'm not asking for nothing y'all have never done before. But y'all (Bengals) just want to win arguments more than winning games in my opinion"

Previous reporting said the Bengals are attempting to change the language of how they void guarantees in contracts, starting with Stewart. The rookie and his reps, obviously, don't love that idea.
Both sides have taken some weird steps to this point. The Bengals choosing here and now to change precedent when edge rusher is already a problem area before a key season is odd. So, too, is Stewart not at least practicing while the contract stuff gets handled in the background, as most first-round picks do/are.

Right now, the interview seems good proof that Stewart will likely sit out of training camp later in the summer if the matter isn't resolved, too.

Deion Sanders had his bladder removed after a cancerous tumor was discovered

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders addressed his health issues Monday during a news conference, acknowledging that he'd kept the worst of it a secret, not even informing his sons or his team. Sanders said he had his bladder removed in May to address a cancerous tumor. His scan looked normal from the vascular side, he said, but a visit to Janet Kukreja, Sanders' doctor at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, revealed the tumor. Sanders, 57, opted for a bladder removal and creation of a new bladder to remove the cancer from the organ. He said he was fortunate and urged others not to delay getting medical attention when symptoms occur. "Let's stop being ashamed of it," he said he decided. "Let's deal with it. Let's deal with it head on. Read more: After successful Big Ten debut, UCLA has designs on something even bigger "This wasn't easy. Everyone, get checked out. Because if it wasn't for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn't have stumbled upon this. .... This could have been a whole other gathering if I hadn't. It's been tough. I think I dropped about 25 pounds." He said urinating is, well, different now. "I can't pee like I used to pee," he said. "I depend on Depends, if you know what I mean." Sanders said he has returned to coaching, and smiled when he said folks shouldn't be surprised if they see a portable toilet on the sidelines during games this fall. He has long had blood circulation issues in his legs that led to the amputation of two toes and several surgeries since 2021. "Thank God the [coaches] are good enough that I don't have to babysit," Sanders said. "They didn't know. They found out yesterday like the rest of the team. Cleveland Guardians' All-Star, MLB Trade Candidate, Being Investigated for Gambling

Chasing first place in the American League Central, the Cleveland Guardians could use a boost before the July 31 MLB trade deadline passes. Unfortunately, after Monday's news, the Guardians will need even more help than they anticipated. According to ESPN's MLB expert Jeff Passan, three-time All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on the non-disciplinary paid leave list. This is a result of the MLB's ongoing sports-betting investigation. If this sounds like a broken record, it's because it is a very familiar story to the Guardians, as fellow pitcher Luis Ortiz is already on paid leave for the same reasons. Clase's leave will run through August 31, taking him out of action for over a month. That means the Guardians will have to find a new closer to rely on, as he leads the team with 24 saves this season. Cade Smith has three, and Paul Sewald has two. The Guardians enter MLB games today trailing the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central division. They're 3.5 games behind the second wild card slot in the AL playoff race, and Clase's absence surely won't help. Related:

Roma keen on Jonathan Rowe

Roma continues to work on the transfer market to find new offensive reinforcements. After the arrivals of El Aynaoui, Ferguson, Wesley, and the imminent arrival of Ghilardi, the Giallorossi club shows no signs of slowing down. Gian Piero Gasperini has reportedly requested a further alternative in attack, specifically a second striker to partner Paulo Dybala, Matías Soulé, and Tommaso Baldanzi. According to the latest name on Frederic Massara's list is Jonathan Rowe, a young attacking winger born in 2003 currently playing for Marseille. The Englishman, coming off a season with three goals and three assists in 28 Ligue 1 appearances, has also made an impact at international level, contributing a goal to England's victory at the Under-21 European Championship. Marseille values Rowe at around €20 million. Premier League clubs such as Leeds and Bournemouth are also interested in the left-back, as well as Atalanta, who could become interested if Lookman's transfer were to materialize.
