Harris Yulin, prolific actor known for ‘Scarface,' ‘Training Day' and ‘Frasier,' dies at 87
Yulin died Tuesday of cardiac arrest in New York, his manager Sue Leibman and his family confirmed in a statement to The Times on Thursday. He was 'part of the vanguard of a generation who cared passionately about the craft of acting — this deep, lifelong dedication led to extraordinary, resonant performances that were a gift to audiences, the actors he worked with, and the art of acting itself,' said the statement, which also remembered the Los Angeles native as an 'avid birder and lover of the sea.'
Born Nov. 5, 1937, Yulin enjoyed a varied screen acting career that spanned multiple decades and spawned more than 100 credits, according to IMDb. In film he portrayed a corrupt Los Angeles official in cahoots with Denzel Washington's immoral narcotics officer in 'Training Day,' a dismissive judge who oversees the court case against the supernatural sleuths in 'Ghostbusters II,' and a detective interested in doing business with Al Pacino's Tony Montana in 'Scarface.'
Yulin counted numerous TV series among his credits, including 'WIOU,' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' '24,' 'Nikita' and 'Veep.' In the final decade of his life, he also appeared in Netflix series 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' and 'Ozark.' In 1996 he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for guest actor in a comedy for his appearance as crime boss Jerome Belasco in the hit NBC series 'Frasier.'
Beyond TV and film, Yulin pursued a prolific career on stage with included Broadway productions of 'Hedda Gabler,' 'The Price,' 'The Visit,' and 'Watch on the Rhine' and off-Broadway shows of 'Hamlet,' 'Arts and Leisure' and 'Rain Dance.' Throughout his career, Yulin brought his talents to the Court Theater and Goodman Theater in Chicago, the Gate Theatre in Dublin and the Bay Street Theater in New York. Yulin was also a stage director who oversaw productions of several plays, including 'The Glass Menagerie,' 'The Trip to Bountiful,' 'This Lime Tree Bower,' 'Men's Lives' and 'The Man Who Came to Dinner.'
Yule was also an instructor who taught at Juilliard, Columbia University and at HB Studio. He continued working on new projects up until his death, including the MGM+ series 'American Classic,' starring Kevin Kline, Laura Linney and Jon Tenney. Deadline reported that the series began production on the East Coast and Yulin was preparing to begin shooting his role this week. His role will be recast.
Series co-creator and executive producer Michael Hoffman mourned Yulin in a statement:'[He] was very simply one of the greatest artists I have ever encountered.'
Hoffman, who worked with Yulin on the 2005 film 'Game 6,' added: 'His marriage of immense technique with an always fresh sense of discovery, gave his work an immediacy and vitality and purity I've experienced nowhere else,' Hoffman said. 'And what he was as an actor, he was as a man, the grace, the humility, the generosity. All of us at 'American Classic' have been blessed by our experience with him. He will always remain the beating heart of our show.'
Yulin is survived by his wife Kristen Lowman, son-in-law Ted Mineo, nephew Martin Crane and godchildren Marco and Lara Greenberg. He was preceded in death by his daughter Claire Lucido. A memorial will be held at a later date.

What Americans Really Think of Meghan Markle's Netflix Show Revealed
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Meghan Markle's Netflix cooking show is known among less than half of U.S. adults and liked by 19 percent of the population, according to polling. Market research agency YouGov has begun collecting regular polling data on With Love, Meghan, the lifestyle series that debuted in March. The data so far published shows 43 percent of people had heard of the show, 19 percent liked it and 11 percent disliked it. That gives a net approval rating of plus eight. Meghan Markle laughs during filming of "With Love, Meghan," her Netflix cooking show, which dropped in March 2025. Meghan Markle laughs during filming of "With Love, Meghan," her Netflix cooking show, which dropped in March 2025. COURTESY OF NETFLIX Why It Matters Meghan and Prince Harry's Netflix contract is due to expire in September and has not yet been renegotiated, with The Sun and People reporting the streaming platform does not plan to renew it. However, Netflix remains an equity partner in Meghan's lifestyle online shop As Ever, which is linked to With Love. That means it takes a cut of Meghan's profits and the more successful she is the more money it makes. There are, therefore, still major questions about whether Netflix will actually cut ties with the Sussexes or simply remold the relationship in a new way. The polling data does suggest With Love has been underperforming compared to the mega deal the Sussexes signed in September 2020, reportedly worth $100 million. What to Know YouGov keeps ongoing rankings of scores of TV shows and places With Love in 713th place, one spot ahead of Dragon Ball Daima and one behind I Am Jazz. The top three shows were Sesame Street, Jeopardy! and The Simpsons, while Suits, the show that gave Meghan her big break, stood in 274th place. According to the data, 76 percent of people had heard of Suits while 33 liked it and 13 percent disliked it. With Love, Meghan premiered on March 4 with eight episodes, offering not only recipes, but also tips on party planning, hosting and an insight into Meghan's celebrity friends. Actors Mindy Kaling and Abigail Spencer, Meghan's co-star from Suits, were among the guests alongside professional chefs who helped to coach the duchess, like Roy Choi and Alice Waters. Meghan aimed for a soft, warm tone and a few days after launch noted the calming nature of the sound design by posting a clip on Instagram with the message: "Oh, how I love ASMR!" The show made far more of a splash than some of Harry and Meghan's other Netflix offerings, including the documentaries Polo and Heart of Invictus. However, many of the reviews were scathing, including in entertainment news website Vulture: "With Love, Meghan is an utterly deranged bizarro world voyage into the center of nothing, a fantastical monument to the captivating power of watching one woman decorate a cake with her makeup artist while communicating solely through throw-pillow adages about joy and hospitality." However, Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos backed Meghan weeks after release despite the tough reviews, citing a rash of product sales after the couple's original 2022 biopic Harry & Meghan. "I think Meghan is underestimated in terms of her influence on culture," he said. "When we dropped the trailer for the Harry & Meghan doc series, everything on-screen was dissected in the press for days. "The shoes she was wearing sold out all over the world. The Hermès blanket that was on the chair behind her sold out everywhere in the world. People are fascinated with Meghan Markle. She and Harry are overly dismissed." YouGov Ratings The polling on With Love, Meghan, is part of YouGov Ratings which uses a different methodology to most one-off surveys. They collect data daily on thousands of public figures, companies and brands in order to provide quarterly ratings. With Love only debuted in March, meaning this is the first batch of data YouGov Ratings has published on the show. "We collect data for YouGov Ratings each and every day, and it's updated every Monday," the pollster's website says. "The data we collect accumulates and every quarter we update the website with the data collected over the past 90 days." Jack Royston is chief royal correspondent for Newsweek, based in London. Adam Sandler's ‘Happy Gilmore 2' Debuts to 46.7 Million Views, Biggest Netflix U.S. Film Opening Ever
Happy Gilmore is back on top. Adam Sandler's long-gestating sequel 'Happy Gilmore 2' teed off with big viewership numbers, ranking at No. 1 on the Netflix list of top 10 English-language movies. 'Happy Gilmore 2' launched on the streamer on July 25. For the week of July 21 through 27, the film generated 46.7 million views over three days, with views defined as total hours watched divided by the total runtime. That makes this start the biggest U.S. opening weekend of all time for a Netflix film, as well as the best ever for one of Sandler's movies. He has starred in nearly a dozen original movies for Netflix, including 'Murder Mystery,' 'Hubie Halloween' and 'The Week Of.' More from Variety Cameron Boyce's Mom Thanks Adam Sandler for 'Happy Gilmore 2' Tribute, Reveals Sandler Was 'Strategizing' on Their Next Movie Together in the 'Days Leading Up' to Boyce's Death 'Happy Gilmore 2' Director and Actor Defend That Major Death in the First Three Minutes: 'When I Found Out I Was Killed, I Started Laughing' Adam Sandler Remembers Cameron Boyce in Subtle 'Happy Gilmore 2' Tribute The sequel's release boosted interest in the original 'Happy Gilmore,' which is also available on Netflix. The decades-old comedy ranked at No. 3 on the global top 10 list with 11.4 million views, marking its second consecutive week on the list. 'Happy Gilmore 2' arrived nearly 30 years after the 1996 film, which generated $40 million at the box office and helped to cement Sandler as one of the biggest comedy stars of his generation. The original followed the titular Happy Gilmore, a would-be hockey player with anger management issues who becomes a golf phenom thanks to his unusual antics. He joins a golf tournament to win money to stop the foreclosure of his grandmother's house. In the sequel, Happy Gilmore retires from the sport and turns to alcohol after a horrific incident on the green. He's inspired to pick up his golf clubs again to finance his daughter's exorbitantly expensive ballet school in Paris. Christopher McDonald also reprises his role as maniacal pro-golfer Shooter McGavin, while Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce and Sandler's real-life wife and kids — Jackie, Sunny and Sadie — joined the cast. Cameos abound, including appearances from PGA champions Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, 'Hot Ones' host Sean Evans and Food Network star Guy Fieri. 'Happy Gilmore' earned a 70% average on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, which is basically a rave in Sandler's canon. ('Billy Madison' sits at 42%, 'Big Daddy' at 39% and 'Little Nicky' at 22%). In Variety's review, chief film critic Owen Gleiberman referred to 'Happy Gilmore 2' as 'a happy orgy of raucous fan-service nostalgia.' Elsewhere on the top 10 movies list, 'KPop Demon Hunters' landed in second place with 26.3 million views in its sixth week. The action-musical now ranks as the most popular Netflix animated film of all time. On the television front, 'Untamed' remained in first place on the English language series chart for the second consecutive week. The murder mystery, set at Yosemite National Park, drew 26.1 million views for the week, up from the 24.6 million views in its debut. The show, starring Eric Bana, was recently renewed for a second season. Meanwhile the third season of 'Squid Game' remained the No. 1 non-English language show for the fifth straight week, racking up an additional 4.6 million views. 'Wednesday' season 2 creators share update on potential spinoff — here's what we know
'Wednesday' season 2 is officially one week away, but with a third season already confirmed and spinoff rumors swirling, fans have been eager for clues about what might be next for the Addams universe. While characters like Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán) offer plenty of potential for expanded stories, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar say their focus, for now, is firmly on Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) and Nevermore Academy (h/t Collider). 'It's not a priority at the moment because, as we just said, it's how do we get Wednesday back faster than we did in season 2? So, we kind of went right from finishing season 2 to jumping right into developing season 3. So, it's sort of all Wednesday all the time at the moment.' That much is clear, especially with season 2 marking Wednesday's return to Nevermore and the intensifying of her visions, including a moment in the trailer where she envisions Enid's death. There's still plenty of ground to cover in the main series before shifting focus to any Netflix spinoffs. Plus, 'Wednesday' season 2 brings a host of fresh faces to Nevermore Academy, from Steve Buscemi's enigmatic new principal Barry Dort and Joanna Lumley's Grandmama Hester Frump, to Billie Piper as music teacher Capri Isadora and Thandiwe Newton as Dr. Fairburn. These characters all offer plenty of scope for deeper exploration in future seasons. Of course, the faster production pace for season 3 is likely welcome news for fans still recovering from the long wait between seasons. And while some might be disappointed to hear that a larger Addams Family universe won't be expanding just yet, Gough and Millar aren't ruling anything out in the long run. As the premiere of season 2 draws near, the showrunners are still hard at work on post-production, fine-tuning everything from sound mixes to color grading, all while staying active in the writers' room. 'This show has been an amazing gift to us,' Millar said. 'And we really want to honor the fans and make sure that we deliver the best show that they deserve after a three-year wait.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Whether or not spinoffs eventually come to life, there's still so much to uncover within the world of Nevermore. For now, fans can look forward to more mystery, more mayhem, and more of Jenna Ortega's unforgettable Wednesday when the series returns. Just expect more scares in season 2, and even a spooky dive into some pretty intense territory. "Wednesday" season 2 will be released on Netflix in two parts: Part 1 on August 6, and part 2 on September 3.
