Dad, daughter die after 4WD plunges into ravine in Segamat

PETALING JAYA : A father and his nine-year-old daughter were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in with four other family members skidded and plunged into a ravine in Kampung Kwongsai, along Jalan Segamat-Labis in Johor yesterday.
Bandar Baru Segamat fire and rescue station operations commander Zainal Abidin Che Deraman identified the deceased as Fitri Said, 39, and Nurin Insyirah.
The four others were Fitri's wife Nurain Farhana Johari, 32, and their three children, Zikri, 11, Nur Hisna, four, and Nur Atiya, two.
Zainal said the station received an emergency call about the incident at 6.47pm.
'A fire rescue tender with seven personnel was dispatched to the scene about 9km from the station,' Bernama reported him as saying today.
Zainal said upon arrival, the team discovered a Toyota Hilux at the bottom of the ravine with two victims trapped beneath it.
'The team used special equipment, including a hydraulic ramp, to stabilise the vehicle and extricate the victims,' he said.
The four other victims managed to free themselves and were sent to a hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police for further action.

The 3.30pm blaze did not result in any injuries or loss of life, according to Tuaran Fire and Rescue Station chief Mohammad Nor Amit. A total of 24 personnel from Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Putatan fire stations responded with three engines following an emergency call at 3.34pm. Twenty-three semi-permanent homes were destroyed while one was partially damaged, along with a vehicle, before the fire was brought under control at 5.15pm. 'We were informed it was due to health reasons, because the crowd was large,' Khairul Nadzir Helmi Azhar told FMT. Hadi, 77, last attended a similar rally in Alor Setar on July 18. The PAS president has been in declining health over the past few years. He was admitted to hospital in June for a medical procedure, and has undergone dialysis and has been admitted to hospital several times. Key leaders who attended the rally today were PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who served as emcee, and secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan. Other political leaders who were present included Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin, PN secretary-general Azmin Ali and Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor.

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Police are studying CCTV footage to identify those involved in a break-in at the home of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's grandchild in Bukit Ledang here on Wednesday, resulting in losses totalling RM1.8 million. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad, who confirmed the investigation, said police were also studying CCTV footage of the victim's residence. Usuf had confirmed yesterday that a home belonging to Mahathir's grandchild had been broken into and jewellery worth RM1.8 million had been stolen. The break-in was discovered by a domestic helper at 3pm after she found that the padlock on the back gate had been cut.
