Kroger responds to backlash over ‘lazy' Juneteenth cakes: ‘The products have been…'

A woman in Atlanta, Georgia, posted a video on TikTok this week from inside her local Kroger. She showed cakes from the bakery section that were meant to celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday marking the end of slavery in the US. 'This is some bulls***,' she said in the video. 'Who the hell made this ugly a** s***. I wish there was a manager around here because y'all decorate everything else around here cute.'
She pointed out cookie cakes with messy icing and odd messages like 'Free @ Last' and 'June 19 Free.' One cake just had plain white frosting on the edges and said only: 'Free.'
'For Juneteenth you want to just throw something on a freaking cookie cake and expect someone to buy it?' she added. 'That's bulls***.'
She also said she planned to come back to the store the next day to speak to an employee about the cakes.
'Kroger, count your days. Why even bother if you're going to lack creativity,' she wrote in the video's caption. 'This is a mockery!'

Kroger responded to the video in a statement saying: 'The cakes and cookies that were featured in the video were inconsistent with our provided guidance and not of the quality we would expect to see from our stores. The products have been removed, and we've addressed this directly with the store teams and the customer who took the initial video,' as reported by the Independent report. Netizens slam Kroger for sloppy cakes
The TikTok video, posted by @blaq.monalisa, has over 10.4 million views, and the comments are filled with people criticizing Kroger.
''Free @ last' is diabolical,' one person wrote. Another said, 'They were better off just not acknowledging Juneteenth.'
'This is funny but NOT funny,' someone else said. 'I'm highly disappointed in Kroger.'
Another comment read: 'If you didn't bring up Juneteenth, I would've thought it was a welcome home from jail cake.'
A lot of people also compared it to Walmart's Juneteenth ice cream from 2022. That product was taken off the shelves after people said it was trying to profit off a Black holiday without real support for Black communities or workers.
Kroger said, "Juneteenth holiday marks a commemoration and celebration of freedom and independence. However, we received feedback that a few items caused concern for some of our customers, and we sincerely apologize. We are reviewing our assortment and will remove items as appropriate.'

Muharram 2025: How it is observed- Traditions, rituals, other details

Muharram 2025:Considered as the second holiest month after Ramadan, Muharram marks the mourning for the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. As per the Gregorian calendar, Muharram will be observed on Sunday, July 6 this year in India. On Muharram, mourners gather at mosques to offer prayers and take out solemn processions to grieve the death of the Prophet's grandson, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala. Tazia, intricately crafted miniature replicas symbolising the tomb of Imam Hussain, are an integral part of the processions. Made primarily of a bamboo structure, the Tazias are adorned with vibrant coloured fabrics, and ornate detailing. On Friday, July 4, people gathered in large numbers on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar ahead of the traditional Muharram procession. The procession, which marked the eighth day of mourning ahead of the main gathering, began from Guru Bazar locality in the city early Friday and passed through the designated route via Jehangir Chowk and Maulana Azad Road. At several places, volunteers were seen offering water to those part of the procession. REUTERS/Sharafat Ali Meanwhile in Delhi, the police have made detailed traffic arrangements across the national capital to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety during the processions on Sunday, July 6 a senior officer told news wire PTI. Muharram - also known as Muharram-ul-Haram - is the first month in the Hijri calendar that marks the beginning of the new year for Muslims across the globe. The period of mourning reaches its zenith with Ashura, a day observed on the 10th of Muharram, which also falls on July 6 this year. Shiite Muslims beat their chests during the Ashoura mourning ritual to mark the tenth day of the Muharram month, in Istanbul, Turkey, Saturday, July 5, 2025. (AP Photo/Francisco Seco) This year, the crescent moon was observed on June 26, and Muharram began on June 27. Hence, Ashura will be observed on July 6. Muharram holds profound religious significance for both Sunni and Shia Muslims. While Sunnis observe the day by fasting, offering special prayers, and reciting the Quran, Shia Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain through solemn processions and the symbolic creation and burial of Taziyas — representations of his tomb.

6 Months After LA Wildfires, Recreational Vehicles Is One Way Victims Are Coping

Altadena: Terry Kilgore lives alone in his Altadena neighborhood in California, sleeping in a recreational vehicle and surrounded by empty lots that were once the site of family homes. In January, those homes were burned to the ground. Six months after the wildfires that devastated the eastern and western flanks of Los Angeles, Kilgore's RV solution is one way victims are coping as the arduous rebuilding effort goes on. "You would never know it but it was pretty here. It's never going to be pretty like it was," said Kilgore, 70, a rock 'n' roll guitarist and lifelong Altadena resident. "The place I grew up in is gone forever. It's a memory." The fires broke out on January 7, when dry desert winds whipped over mountain passes with hurricane force, following eight months without rain. The Eaton Fire, in Los Angeles County just east of the city, devastated the community of Altadena, while the Palisades Fire leveled much of the coastal Pacific Palisades district. The fires killed 22 people, destroyed nearly 12,000 homes and caused as much as $53.8 billion in property damage, according to a report by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation. While many homeowners complain about delays, L.A. city and county officials say rebuilding progress has exceeded initial expectations. About 75% of the 4,398 residential lots destroyed or severely damaged in the city of Los Angeles have been cleared of debris and are certified for rebuilding, according to a spokesperson for Mayor Karen Bass. In Altadena, in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, there are still a few burnt-out and boarded-up businesses. Some are strewn with rubble. But most of the residential lots are cleared and free of char. One source of Altadena's charm - its proximity to nature - also made it vulnerable to wildfire. Black and Latino families have lived in Altadena for generations and the suburb is also popular with younger artists and engineers working at the nearby NASA rocket lab who were attracted by the small-town vibe and spectacular mountain views. Now the town is dotted with signs of "Altadena is not for sale," reflecting concerns that speculators and developers may turn what had been rows of neat bungalows into gaudy cash cows. Kilgore's RV is parked within a sea of razed lots and the occasional home that is still standing but vacant due to smoke damage. Many homeowners are crashing with friends and family, or renting during the rebuild, but others, like Kilgore, have chosen to live on their properties in RVs. Jose Luis Martinez, 71, a retired electrician born in El Salvador, had been in his home 38 years when it burned down. Uninsured like Kilgore, and living on Social Security, he has no long-term plan but decided to hold onto the property and camp in an RV. Others received insurance payments. Retired pastor Edwin Isaacs, 64, paid off his mortgage and is happy to live on his property condition-free in an RV, while Marialyce Pedersen has parked a trailer on her property while she rebuilds. "I was 61 years old and ready to retire and enjoy my pool and my life. I love that my land is still here," she said. "Here it feels familiar, like the right place for my body to be." Kilgore, who once played with former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth, says he lost some of his best guitars in the fire, including a 1953 Fender Telecaster and a 1904 Parlor, along with an estimated $120,000 in equipment from his home studio. He said he saved five guitars that he grabbed on his way out the door to evacuate. He once lived in a comfortable home with a high ceiling and tree-filled yard. Now he sweats inside a Bounder RV and washes and shaves with cold hose water in an outdoor basin. His main goal, he said, is to re-record all his original music that was lost in the fire. "That's probably what's left for me to do," Kilgore said. "I could die after that, for all I care. I've seen enough of this monkey show, I'm telling you."
