Muharram 2025:Considered as the second holiest month after Ramadan, Muharram marks the mourning for the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
As per the Gregorian calendar, Muharram will be observed on Sunday, July 6 this year in India.
On Muharram, mourners gather at mosques to offer prayers and take out solemn processions to grieve the death of the Prophet's grandson, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala.
Tazia, intricately crafted miniature replicas symbolising the tomb of Imam Hussain, are an integral part of the processions. Made primarily of a bamboo structure, the Tazias are adorned with vibrant coloured fabrics, and ornate detailing.
On Friday, July 4, people gathered in large numbers on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar ahead of the traditional Muharram procession.
The procession, which marked the eighth day of mourning ahead of the main gathering, began from Guru Bazar locality in the city early Friday and passed through the designated route via Jehangir Chowk and Maulana Azad Road. At several places, volunteers were seen offering water to those part of the procession. Meanwhile in Delhi, the police have made detailed traffic arrangements across the national capital to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety during the processions on Sunday, July 6 a senior officer told news wire PTI.
Muharram - also known as Muharram-ul-Haram - is the first month in the Hijri calendar that marks the beginning of the new year for Muslims across the globe.
The period of mourning reaches its zenith with Ashura, a day observed on the 10th of Muharram, which also falls on July 6 this year. This year, the crescent moon was observed on June 26, and Muharram began on June 27. Hence, Ashura will be observed on July 6.
Muharram holds profound religious significance for both Sunni and Shia Muslims. While Sunnis observe the day by fasting, offering special prayers, and reciting the Quran, Shia Muslims mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain through solemn processions and the symbolic creation and burial of Taziyas — representations of his tomb.

Is Muharram a federal holiday in the United States? All you need to know

Muharram, the Islamic New Year, is not a federal holiday in the United States. Unlike countries like India, where it's a public holiday, American government offices, schools, and businesses operate normally. The first day of Muharram began on June 27 this year, but most Americans didn't get time off work. While recognized as important to Muslims, it doesn't appear on the US government's holiday calendar. This means mail gets delivered, schools stay open, and banks conduct business as usual. Some cities with large Muslim populations might see local adjustments, but nationally, it's business as usual during this sacred time. American Muslims navigate work and school during Muharram creatively. Many use vacation days for Ashura observance or request flexible hours. Employers aren't required to give time off, though some companies in diverse areas accommodate religious no official holiday, Muharram holds deep meaning for American Muslims. The month marks the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, where Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad's grandson, was martyred. Many observe Ashura (July 6 this year) with fasting or mourning. Cultural centers like the Islamic Society of North America educate neighbors about Muharram through open houses. While no parades like in South Asia occur, US cities sometimes issue Muharram proclamations honoring Muslim contributions. This balance maintains America's secular calendar while respecting religious freedom. Here is a complete list of federal holidays observed in the United States. Federal operations are mostly closed on these days, with some exceptions in certain cases.

JBVNL steps up for safe power supply

1 2 Ranchi: The Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) has started wrapping 3,000 electric poles, located along the designated Muharram procession routes falling in densely populated and high-traffic zones, with protective plastic coverings to minimise the risk of power-related accidents. Electrical superintending engineer with the JBVNL (Ranchi Zone), D N Sahu, said, "The step is being taken to avoid any accidental contact between participants and electric poles." The JBVNL appealed to public and Muharram committees to follow safety protocols like limits on the height of 'tazias' and sound systems mounted on vehicles. Further, people should neither sit atop buses or tall vehicles, nor add heights by placing structures on vehicles that could violate the permissible height and risk contact with overhead power lines. All organising committees are expected to deploy an adequate number of volunteers to prevent accidents resulting from negligence or unauthorised activity during processions. The public has also been urged not to touch or make any form of contact with electric poles, wires, or equipment. along the route, either directly or with the help of sticks or other objects. The use of oversised or tall vehicles in the procession is also discouraged to maintain safety along the paths lined with overhead electrical infrastructure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Show Off Your Talent: Enter the Ultimate Creator Contest!
