Carey Island poised to be tech and food security hub
PETALING JAYA: Selangor is closer to its aspiration to become a smart, competitive and regional leader in green economy and food security with the development of an EduTechnology Park and Food Security Hub on Carey Island.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the project not only reflected the state government's vision but also strengthened Carey Island's position as an international hub for technology-driven development, education, and food security.
The project will be undertaken via a series of memoranda of understanding between Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd which will spearhead the project, and three other entities – SD Guthrie Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd and Yayasan Selangor.
According to Amirudin, Yayasan Selangor will be tasked with developing an international-standard campus to enhance educational access and build human capital at the EduTechnology Park.
'Yayasan Selangor will play a key role in developing education facilities for the next generation.
'This is not just a physical investment, but an investment in the younger generation of Selangor,' he said in a joint statement.
SD Guthrie will be the developer of the project, marking the second strategic collaboration to builds parts of the group's land on Carey Island, which is 79% owned by the company.

He said the move was important following the Selangor 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report's showing that the majority of farmers in the state are now aged 46 and above. He said that apart from promising high returns, the agricultural sector also needs to be seen as a 'cool' activity from the perspective of young people. "There was once a 'trend' of young people, including engineers, getting involved in agriculture, but that did not continue. "Following that, we have to make agriculture 'cool', a good activity because it brings high yields or returns," he told reporters after launching the Selangor 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report here today. Also present at the event was Chief Statistician of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, who is also Commissioner of the 2024 Agricultural Census. Earlier, the Selangor Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM in a media statement said that the majority of agricultural entrepreneurs in Selangor or 77.3 per cent were aged 46 and above, while 44.5 per cent were aged 60 and above. Commenting further, Amirudin said the policy to encourage young people to become farmers was expected to be implemented in the state budget or the upcoming Selangor Plan. In addition, he said the findings of the agricultural census would also be examined by Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim, the Selangor Agriculture Department, and related departments in improving policies or guidelines regarding the sector.

More than 75% of Selangor farmers are more than 46 years old, census shows
MORE than three-quarters of Selangor's farmers are aged 46 years old and above, according to the Interim Report of the 2024 Agriculture Census. The findings showed that 77.3% of farmers were in this age group, with 44.5% aged 60 and above. Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the figures showed the need for long-term planning to ensure sustainability of the state's agriculture sector. 'When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, I realised the seriousness of food security after reading a report that some of our neighbouring countries were considering halting rice exports to Malaysia. 'That was when I clearly saw how fragile our food supply situation could become,' he said when launching the report in Klang. He said accurate and timely data would allow policies to be adjusted more quickly instead of waiting another decade between census exercises. The last census was conducted in 2005. The report recorded 37,117 agricultural holdings in Selangor, of which 95.6% were operated by individuals and 4.4% by organisations. Chief Statistician of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said Sabak Bernam led with 9,296 holdings, including the state's largest padi cultivation area at more than 24,000ha.
