St. Paul street dance festival will feature local and out-of-state performers
The SOTA Movement, organized by Maia Maiden Productions and MN Krump, is a three-day festival from Friday through Sunday, featuring dance workshops, battles and a performance showcase at Park Square Theater in St. Paul. The performances will include both solo and group acts from artists varying in age and experience, some as young as seven.
'We are trying to bring one of the best experiences back to Minnesota when it comes to the streets, arts and hip hop culture in general,' organizer and krump artist Ololade Gbadamosi-Alashe, aka Gambit, said.
The festival will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday with 'The gathering,' an event that encourages community members and dancers to connect, experience a cypher or freestyle dance workshop, eat, drink and highlight women in hip-hop.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, doors open for 'Uprizing,' a series of krump battles where dancers compete head-to-head. Finally, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, 'Rooted,' The SOTA Movement's showcase, 'exhibits the skills and techniques of the finest choreographers in the Twin Cities and beyond,' according to their website.
'In a time where arts funding is getting cut and people are wondering where we will be, the time to show up is now,' Maia Maiden said. 'The SOTA Movement is ready.'
Not only does the SOTA Movement foster community togetherness, Gbadamosi-Alashe said, it also supports local talent.
'It gives people who are in street arts or hip hop a platform to present as artists rather than having regular street sessions or street battles,' Gbadamosi-Alashe said. 'It gives them an opportunity to see themselves as artists, as well as create a portfolio for them to be in the industry.'
Free dance workshops led by professional dancers, open to all experience levels and ages, will also take place Friday through Sunday. Tickets were to be reserved online, but Gbadamosi-Alashe said if you weren't able to grab a free ticket, but are interested in joining a workshop, 'the best thing to do is just show up.'
People can expect to have a good time, Gbadamosi-Alashe said. Some performances he's looking forward to are those of Rondo Double Dutch, previous krump battle winner, Athena and up-and-coming dancer, Desaré Cox.
'We pride ourselves on leaving everybody with not just a good time, but a full experience,' Gbadamosi-Alashe said. 'We see the audience as part of our community. So come on through, enjoy it and start your summer off well.'

Bob Odenkirk kept training since 'Nobody' for bigger sequel
1 of 5 | Bob Odenkirk, seen at the 2025 Tony Awards in New York City, returns in "Nobody 2." File Photo by Angelina Katsanis/UPI | License Photo July 17 (UPI) -- Universal Pictures released a behind-the-scenes look at Nobody 2 on Thursday. The film opens Aug. 15 in theaters. In the featurette, star Bob Odenkirk tells viewers he continued training after he wrapped the first Nobody, which opened in 2021. For that film, he trained two years with Daniel Bernhardt and the 87eleven Action Design team. On the set of Nobody 2, Odenkirk is seen offering to do extra takes and lifting weights on the set claiming, "Come on, that's not hard." Bernhardt confirmed that Odenkirk was ready for more in the sequel. "Bob was already on a whole different level," Bernhardt said. "It's a whole different game now." Producer David Leitch, who co-created the John Wick franchise and has directed Atomic Blonde, The Fall Guy and more, said Nobody 2 took advantage of Odenkirk's new skills. "When you get an actor that does that and immerses themselves, it allows you to create action that you couldn't create for some other actor who doesn't have the discipline," Leitch said. "We can amp up the level in this film." Odenkirk returns as Hutch, a retired assassin who takes his family on vacation and stumbles upon another criminal operation. He fights bad guys on a boat, in an arcade and an elevator, among other action settings.

‘Wicked' Concert Special Featuring Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo Sets Air Date
NBC's upcoming Wicked concert special finally has a broadcast date, with the network announcing Wednesday (July 9) when fans will get to watch Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's live performances of songs from the musical. Arriving just a few weeks ahead of Wicked: For Good, the special will air on NBC at 8 p.m. ET on Nov. 6. The following day, the concert will become available for streaming on Peacock. More from Billboard Everything We Know About 'Wicked: For Good' (So Far) The Iconic Lacoste Polo Is 60% Off With This Amazon Prime Day Deal Free People's Viral Barrel Jeans Have the Internet Divided Over Their Stylishness (and They're Almost Out of Stock) According to a release, the showcase will last two hours and feature music from the first Wicked film — along with possible selections from the sequel, which will hit theaters Nov. 21. It'll take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The air-date announcement comes two months after NBC first shared that the Billboard Hot 100-topping star and Tony winner would reunite on stage for a Wicked special event. The concert is expected to bolster the hype around Part 2's premiere, which will come almost exactly a year after the first film in the duology dropped. As of late May, Part 1 had grossed more than $755.9 million worldwide. 'She's able to access her rage more,' Erivo recently told Billboard of what happens to Elphaba in the upcoming film. 'The scent I wore changed. The makeup changed. Little shifts that bring you to a more mature version of who Elphaba becomes. And she is delicious in this next one.' Erivo and Grande haven't performed much Wicked material together offscreen, although they did join forces at the 2025 Oscars to sing 'Defying Gravity' together on stage. The former also performed 'Home' from The Wiz while the latter belted out 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' from The Wizard of Oz; later that night, Wicked took home best costume design and best production design.
