Unity Classic could be a benchmark of the HBCU football season
While VUU is coming off one of the best seasons in program history, EWU looks to rebound and challenge for the SIAC crown. This early interconference game could serve as a barometer for the two teams. Will CIAA Coach of the Year Alvin Parker keep things rolling in 2025? He was named earlier this year to attend both the NFL's Eighth Annual Quarterback Summit and the NFL's Ozzie Newsome General Manager Forum. He has the Panthers rolling and seems poised to be even stronger this season.
EWU is looking to rebuild. Head coach Toriano Morgan has shown the ability to put the Tigers in a position to win, and he seems optimistic about this season. Just last week, Morgan added FAMU quarterback Transfer DJ Boney to the squad. The dual-threat quarterback could be the difference-maker in getting EWU to the next level.
The Unity Classic will be a key game in evaluating the potential of both squads' seasons. The Unity Classic is scheduled from Sept. 11-13 on the campus of EWU. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Tallahassee sponsors the game and will be broadcast nationally. HBCU Gameday is a co-sponsor of the Unity Classic.
The Unity Classic is the brainchild of EWU Trustee the Rev. Dr. RB Holmes Jr. Holmes has also served as a trustee at another HBCU, Florida A&M. His vision to bring the classic to Jacksonville stems from a broader vision.
"There are great men and women who have told us it's in our hands to make this a better place and a better country, and most importantly to save and strengthen HBCUs," Holmes said. "We're bringing together for the first time in the history of this city, a classic that is speaking directly to the significance of HBCUs. We have two of the finest universities on planet Earth, the Virginia Union University and Edward Waters University. My brothers and sisters, this is going to be magic."

Jackson State lone HBCU in FCS poll
The 2025 STATS PERFORM FCS Poll is out and HBCU national champion Jackson State is the only one in the top State, the reigning SWAC champion and Celebration Bowl winner, was ranked 17th in the 56-person poll. North Dakota State was the top-ranked school other HBCU football programs were listed in the receiving votes category. Defending MEAC champion South Carolina State, which went 9-3 last season including a loss to JSU in the Celebration Bowl, received 35 votes. It will play this season without reigning MEAC Offensive Player of the Year Eric Phoenix, who led the team as its starting quarterback. Tennessee State received 21 votes after a 9-4 season that included a three-way tie for the Ohio Valley/Big South Conference championship and an FCS playoff game. It will start this season under new head coach Reggie Barlow following the departure of Eddie George. The final HBCU in the receiving votes category was North Carolina Central. NC Central went 8-3 last season, with its loss to South Carolina State the only blemish in five conference State went 12-2 last season en route to its third SWAC title in four seasons and its fourth Celebration Bowl. It lost leading rusher Irv Mulligan but returns a solid cast of players including starting quarterback Jacobian Morgan and defensive tackle Jeremiah Williams, one of the final holdovers from the Deion Sanders Era. HBCU hires first ever female to football staff
South Carolina State University, a leading HBCU, has named Tess Abbott as its new Director of Recruiting for the football program. Head coach Chennis Berry announced her addition on July 1, 2025. Abbott makes history as the first woman to serve on the football staff at South Carolina State. The university continues to set the standard for growth and inclusion in HBCU athletics. Elevating HBCU Football Recruiting In her role, Abbott will guide the Bulldogs' entire recruiting strategy. Her focus includes: Coordinating official and unofficial campus visitsEvaluating athletic talentManaging recruiting operations both on and off campus Coach Berry praised Abbott's leadership, calling her a valuable asset. Her addition brings fresh energy and structure to the program's recruiting goals. Strong Background in Collegiate Sports Before joining this HBCU program, Abbott worked with UMass Football as the Director of On-Campus Recruiting and Administrative Operations. She led campus events, coordinated team logistics, and handled key administrative projects. She also gained professional sports experience with the High Point Rockers, where she served as Community Relations and Social Media Coordinator. Academic and Athletic Achievements Abbott earned a master's degree in Sport Management from Coastal Carolina University. While there, she interned with the football team and served as a graduate assistant. She also holds a bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Western Michigan University, with minors in Event Management and General Business. A former student-athlete, Abbott competed on WMU's gymnastics team. She later served as a student assistant coach. In 2022, she received the NCAA Ethnic Minority Graduate Scholarship and completed a diversity internship with WMU Athletics.
