Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor band to perform at national music final
Y Ddelwedd, an A-level band from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, will compete in the BBC Wales Battle of the Bands at this year's National Eisteddfod in Wrexham and perform on the Llwyfan y Maes stage on Wednesday, August 6. Hari Emlyn Davies, band member, said: "We've only been together for less than a year, so it's been a shock to reach the final of Brwydr y Bandiau, and getting to play on the main Eisteddfod field. "We've had loads of support from the staff and students in Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor. "The lecturers have been really supportive and have allowed us to flourish artistically and creatively. "We've played a few gigs in college, but this is going to be the highlight of the year so far." The group is made up of Hari Emlyn Davies, Enlli Jones, Owen Wyn Jones, Cian Clinc, Eban Davies and Isaac Parsons, who study at the college's Pwllheli and Dolgellau campuses. Being chosen as Battle of the Bands finalists is an impressive achievement for Y Ddelwedd, given they only played their first gig in February this year. The band will compete for a £1,000 prize and the opportunity to perform on the Maes B stage on Saturday, August 9. Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor said the band's success is an inspiration to others. Fflur Rees Jones, assistant principal, said: "Y Ddelwedd being confirmed as finalists in this year's BBC Wales Battle of the Bands at the National Eisteddfod is a moment of immense pride for us at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor. Perth bass guitarists share musical experiences down the decades
Guitarists George and Frankie spoke about their love of the Fender Bass. Two Perth bass guitar players in city bands decades apart shared stories of gigs, late-night rehearsals and treasured instruments. George Clark - formerly of 1960s Perth band The Erle Blue Stars and resident of the city's Ochil Care Home - met Frankie Sweeney of award-winning Indie rock outfit The Crom who emerged five years ago. The meeting, arranged by Ochil's activities staff, gave them the opportunity to chat about their shared interests and passion for the bass guitar. They each revealed a deep admiration for the unmistakable tone of a Fender bass guitar. Ochil Care Home general manager Liz Stewart said: 'Despite the decades between their debut performances, both musicians discovered a mirror in the other — kindred spirits shaped by rhythm, resilience, and the soulful rumble of baselines. 'For George, who once played packed halls across Perthshire, this moment rekindled memories of his time on stage, while Frankie found insight and inspiration from a local legend whose legacy still echoes in community lore. 'Seeing the spark in George's eyes as he connected with someone who understood his experience — not just musically but personally — was heartwarming. 'It's moments like these that remind us how powerful shared experiences can be. 'The visit left everyone buzzing with joy and proved that music isn't just timeless — it's connective, healing, and deeply human. 'It was a celebration of identity, artistry, and the kind of community that allows stories to be passed on, chord by chord.' The Crom are influenced by guitar-based rock bands including The Beatles, The Stone Roses, and The Jam. They took the Best Band title after reaching the final 10 in the category in the eighth annual Radio WigWam Awards 2025. It followed winning the Best Indie Rock Act at the awards in January 2023. In 2022 The Crom won the Battle of the Bands competition at Perth venue The Twa Tams. And their debut album, 'Right On Cue', was nominated for the 2022 Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award. The Erle Blue Stars, led by the late Erle Jacobson, had a loyal following in the Perth area in the 1960s and regularly played City Hall.

3-day music festival Rock the Lake features all-Canadian lineup for 2025
The asphalt at Prospera Place is undergoing its annual transformation. The parking lot of the multi-purpose entertainment and sports facility is being transformed into the ultimate festival grounds for Rock the Lake, a three-day music festival. Each year, the event brings more than 5,000 fans together to see some of their favourite musicians perform. This year, organizers have focused on Canadian talent. 'This is the first time in festival history we have had an all-Canadian lineup,' said Trish Jelinski, GSL Group vice-president of sales, sports & entertainment. Jelinski says the all-Canadian theme extends past the stage and onto the grounds. 'We have collaborated with all our vendors and our partners, so when you come on site, you will see the best of Canadian brands.' Story continues below advertisement 'It's like I don't really understand it in my brain still, it's just really cool to be on the same stage with people that I used to listen to growing up,' said Shalisa Liesch, Crush XO band member. The opportunity to perform with some of her idols is the chance of a lifetime. 'It's the biggest show we have ever done,' said Liesch. 'We did not expect this, but we are pretty excited.' Unity Classic could be a benchmark of the HBCU football season
For the first time, Edward Waters University (EWU) of the SIAC and Virginia Union University (VUU) of the CIAA will face off in the inaugural Unity Classic in Jacksonville, FL on Sept. 13. The HBCU football Classic comes with a full slate of ancillary activities and promises to deliver everything from a Greek Step Show to a Battle of the Bands. While VUU is coming off one of the best seasons in program history, EWU looks to rebound and challenge for the SIAC crown. This early interconference game could serve as a barometer for the two teams. Will CIAA Coach of the Year Alvin Parker keep things rolling in 2025? He was named earlier this year to attend both the NFL's Eighth Annual Quarterback Summit and the NFL's Ozzie Newsome General Manager Forum. He has the Panthers rolling and seems poised to be even stronger this season. EWU is looking to rebuild. Head coach Toriano Morgan has shown the ability to put the Tigers in a position to win, and he seems optimistic about this season. Just last week, Morgan added FAMU quarterback Transfer DJ Boney to the squad. The dual-threat quarterback could be the difference-maker in getting EWU to the next level. The Unity Classic will be a key game in evaluating the potential of both squads' seasons. The Unity Classic is scheduled from Sept. 11-13 on the campus of EWU. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Tallahassee sponsors the game and will be broadcast nationally. HBCU Gameday is a co-sponsor of the Unity Classic. The Unity Classic is the brainchild of EWU Trustee the Rev. Dr. RB Holmes Jr. Holmes has also served as a trustee at another HBCU, Florida A&M. His vision to bring the classic to Jacksonville stems from a broader vision. "There are great men and women who have told us it's in our hands to make this a better place and a better country, and most importantly to save and strengthen HBCUs," Holmes said. "We're bringing together for the first time in the history of this city, a classic that is speaking directly to the significance of HBCUs. We have two of the finest universities on planet Earth, the Virginia Union University and Edward Waters University. My brothers and sisters, this is going to be magic."
