Nathaniel Hackett returns to Packers as defensive analyst
Former Broncos head coach and Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is now back on staff with the Packers, head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed in his Thursday press conference.
Hackett will serve as a defensive analyst for the club, helping give coordinator Jeff Hafley a fresh perspective.
It's a similar role to what Robert Saleh played for the offense when he joined the staff last year after being fired as Jets head coach. Luke Getsy also served as a defensive analyst last year after he'd been fired from his role as Raiders offensive coordinator. Getsy is now still on staff as a senior assistant.
'He's a guy I really respect and we've had a lot of great times together,' LaFleur said Thursday, via Zach Kruse of USA Today.
'It's a fresh perspective. It gives you a little different lens to see it through, talk it through,' LaFleur added. 'He's sitting in with our defensive staff. He's been in our linebacker room going through the film, giving them a good offensive perspective.'
Hackett was the Packers' offensive coordinator under LaFleur from 2019-2021. He was then hired as Broncos head coach in 2022 and was fired after a 51-14 loss to the Rams on Christmas Day with two games remaining in the season. He then served as Jets offensive coordinator in 2023, reuniting with Aaron Rodgers. He lost play-calling duties after Saleh was fired as Jets head coach midway through the 2024 season.

Packers claim speedy former Jets draft pick to help RB depth
The Green Bay Packers are claiming speedy running back Israel Abanikanda off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers, according to Aaron Wilson and agent Shawn O'Gorman. Abanikanda, who is still only 22 years old, was a fifth-round pick of the New York Jets in 2023. He played in six games as a rookie, rushing 22 times for 70 yards and catching seven passes for 43 yards. Inactive for the first 12 games of the 2024 season, Abanikanda was waived by the Jets in December of 2024, leading to his arrival in San Francisco. The 49ers waived Abanikanda (5-10, 216) from the 90-man roster on Thursday. The Packers are strong at the top of the running back depth chart, with Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs, 2024 third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd and backups Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks leading the way. The Packers may see the need for more depth at training camp, considering rookie Amar Johnson is on the non-football injury list with a hamstring injury. Abanikanda would give the roster a sixth healthy running back with Johnson out. Abanikanda was a first-team All-ACC pick and third-team All-American in 2022 after rushing for 1,431 yards and scoring 21 total touchdowns across 11 games. He set Pitt's all-time record for rushing yards in a game when he gained 320 yards against Virginia Tech in 2022. Abanikanda also has experience returning kickoffs, including one kickoff return touchdown while at Pitt. While he didn't participate at the NFL Scouting Combine, Abanikanda had an excellent pro day, hitting 41" in the vertical leap, covering 10-8 in the broad jump and running the 40-yard dash in the 4.3-second range. His unofficial Relative Athletic Score was 9.88 out of 10.0 given his pro day results. Abanikanda will need to pass a physical on Saturday to be officially signed to the Packers roster. The team doesn't practice again until Sunday.

Jets, The Most-Penalized Team Last Year, to Have Officials at Training Camp
The New York Jets hope seeing more black-and-white stripes in training camp will result in fewer yellow flags during the season. Coach Aaron Glenn said Friday the team will often have officials at practice through the summer after the Jets, under the previous regime of coach Robert Saleh, led the NFL in penalties the last two seasons. New York rarely used officials during training camp practices last summer. Many NFL teams hire officials for at least some of their camp practices, giving players the opportunity to get used to how plays are called in a non-game environment. "I want the officials here as much as possible, and they know that," Glenn said. "It's no secret that we were the most-penalized team in the league last year, so that's one of the things that I want to nip in the bud early — making sure that the discipline part of what we do, that we fix that now. "You cannot win games in this league with an undisciplined team, so all the penalties that we had last year, we're knocking those things out." Last season, the Jets were penalized 137 times, five more than Tennessee and Baltimore, and finished 5-12 — with Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas both fired in the middle of the season. In 2023, New York was called for 124 penalties, nine more than Cleveland and Dallas, and went 7-10. "The officials are going to be here, and we're going to knock that out all right," Glenn said. "I will tell you this: We are going to knock these penalties out. We're going to understand that undisciplined teams do not win games." Philadelphia, last year's Super Bowl champion, ranked 11th in the NFL with 103 penalties. Kansas City, the AFC champion, was fourth with 94. The Los Angeles Rams, who won the NFC West, had the fewest penalties in the league with 91. Glenn said there are two types of calls on players during games: pre-snap penalties — "the dumb penalties" — and competitive penalties, including pass interference. "The competitive penalties — listen, you go back and forth with those, right?" Glenn said. "Like [pass interference], guys are fighting. Those are competitive penalties. Holds, those are competitive. Now, false starts, jumping offside, hitting after plays, the dumb stuff, we've got to knock those out. And we control those. And those are the things I want to make sure we get rid of."
