Malbatt honoured with UN Medals for contributions to peacekeeping, outreach programmes
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 155 personnel from the Malaysian Battalion (Malbatt) 850-12, including 20 officers, 134 other ranks, and one government staff member, were honoured with United Nations (UN) Medals.
They were honoured in a ceremonial medal parade held at the Marakah Camp in Lebanon on Thursday (June 19).
The parade, held in full military tradition, was led by Malbatt 850-12 deputy commander Leftenan Kolonel Firdaus Shah Budin, who served as the parade commander.
The event was accompanied by a performance from the Ghana Battalion (Ghanbatt) military band.
Heading the list of medal recipients was Malbatt 850-12 commander Kolonel Johan Effendi Mohd Shalleh, in recognition of his leadership and significant contribution to the mission's success.
The medals were presented by United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) Sector West commander, Brigadier General Nicola Mandolesi, who later continued the award ceremony to senior officers and all other ranks.
Also present was Malaysia's Ambassador to Lebanon, Azri Mat Yacob, who officiated the medal adornment as a gesture of the Malaysian Government's support and appreciation for the contingent's role in international peacekeeping efforts.
The awarding of the UN Medals is an official recognition of the professionalism, dedication, and contributions of Malbatt 850-12 personnel in maintaining regional peace and supporting international missions.
Malbatt 850-12 began its deployment under Unifil in November 2024, during a period of heightened security concerns in southern Lebanon, amid escalating tensions in the region involving Israel and Iran. These challenges posed significant pressure on local political stability and public safety.
In this context, Malbatt 850-12 played a crucial role in supporting Unifil's mandate to assist the Lebanese government in strengthening security control and monitoring within the area of operations, while also fostering strong cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).
Beyond peacekeeping operations, Malbatt 850-12 has also carried out numerous humanitarian initiatives, including medical outreach, food aid distribution, and engagement programmes for orphans.
These efforts have helped foster goodwill with local communities and contributed meaningfully to social stability within the region.

Malaysia reviews electricity tariff and tax adjustments for 2025-2027
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government has clarified its stance on recent tax and electricity tariff adjustments, emphasising efforts to minimise public burden while ensuring sustainable economic policies. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated, 'If possible, we don't want to burden the people with taxes. But if there are one or two cases where people are affected, we can make improvements. ‘Open entry will hurt deserving students from poor families'
ALOR SETAR: The increasing reliance on direct or open entry routes into public universities will shortchange high-achievers from low and middle-income families aiming for critical fields like medicine, engineering and law, says Kedah Higher Education committee chairman Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah. 'It's disheartening when a student from a poor family, who scored straight A's, may not get into a public medical programme due to limited slots, while someone with lower results can enter through the open route if they can afford it,' said Haim Hilman, who is also a former Universiti Utara Malaysia vice-chancellor. He said the pressure intensifies when these students are not offered places through the UPUOnline system and are instead pushed towards courses or programmes that are not in demand. The scenario could also affect those from middle-income parents whose children have excellent academic results but were denied placings due to their lack of finances, he said. He urged the government to re-evaluate education policies to prevent jeopardising the future of high-achieving students, particularly those from B40 and M40 families. Haim Hilman also advocated for Malaysian universities, especially those with five-star Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA) ratings, to commercialise their research to reduce reliance on traditional funding. He noted that research findings with commercial potential are often underutilised and suggested that universities operate like government-linked companies to monetise innovations. On a related matter, two student leaders have voiced concerns over the increasing use of open entry routes to public universities, claiming that it significantly impacts applications made through the usual UPUOnline system. Universiti Malaya Student Union (UMSU) secretariat Lee Yu Dong, a law undergraduate, said UM should focus on increasing the UPUOnline system quota rather than expanding the direct intake channel. Lee said that public universities should not operate like commercial entities by imposing high increases in tuition fees for students who enrolled through direct channels. Lee also backed a call by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong that the 2025/2026 MBBS intake through Satu be suspended immediately and that the government should set up a Royal Commission of Inquiry to review the public university admission systems. 'Direct intake should be a last resort for students to enter sought-after courses like medicine, law and pharmacy, based on academic merit, not financial means,' said Lee, who is also the general secretary of UM Association of New Youth (Umany). Citing Umany statistics, Lee said 35% of direct intake students are from B40 families. 'Public universities should prioritise the welfare of students. Ignoring this risks exacerbating brain drain, delaying Malaysia's development goals, and diminishing hope for a brighter future,' he added. Ong Jelyn, a UMSU representative and third-year medical student, said while admissions flexibility might diversify student backgrounds, it risks sidelining those who applied through the rigorous UPUOnline system. She said the 67% fee increase in direct admissions is unjustifiable, especially if it is done without transparency and providing better student support as this would severely affect B40 and M40 families. Ong said that high fees would limit social mobility, jeopardising public universities' role in providing a chance for underprivileged communities. 'Scholarships and financial protections must precede any fee restructuring,' she said, reiterating that education is a right, not a commodity.

Moyog seat: PKR demands first priority

PENAMPANG: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Penampang branch sees itself as the main contender among government-linked parties to contest the Moyog seat in the State election. Chairman of Penampang PKR Joseph Alex Chang, after handing over of appointment letters to newly appointed committee members, said it has the sole right among government-linked parties to contest the seat, now held by Parti Warisan. 'The party's deputy president (Nurul Izzah Anwar) announced that PKR Sabah will be contesting 13 seats and we will be contesting the Moyog seat,' he said. Upko, also a member of the unity government, is also eyeing the seat, as well as GRS. 'We pledge to give full support to Datuk Seri Anwar to continue leading this country as Prime Minister,' he said, adding that Anwar is a visionary leader and one of the best Malaysian leaders. Historically, he said, Penampang PKR has always maintained the Moyog seat for the party in the past two state elections. He reminded party members and supporters to always bear in mind that the election is just around the corner. Joseph noted that some party members have been taking a relaxed attitude given less challenging atmosphere after the last election. 'We must step up our efforts and ensure that this seat will remain with PKR,' he added. 'While it has not been ascertained who in Penampang PKR will be the candidate, what is most certain is that PKR will be contesting the seat.' Terrence Siambun won the Moyog seat under the PKR banner in 2013 with total votes of 7, 462 and majority of 1, 682 votes.
