Moyog seat: PKR demands first priority

PENAMPANG: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Penampang branch sees itself as the main contender among government-linked parties to contest the Moyog seat in the State election. Chairman of Penampang PKR Joseph Alex Chang, after handing over of appointment letters to newly appointed committee members, said it has the sole right among government-linked parties to contest the seat, now held by Parti Warisan. 'The party's deputy president (Nurul Izzah Anwar) announced that PKR Sabah will be contesting 13 seats and we will be contesting the Moyog seat,' he said. Upko, also a member of the unity government, is also eyeing the seat, as well as GRS. 'We pledge to give full support to Datuk Seri Anwar to continue leading this country as Prime Minister,' he said, adding that Anwar is a visionary leader and one of the best Malaysian leaders. Historically, he said, Penampang PKR has always maintained the Moyog seat for the party in the past two state elections. He reminded party members and supporters to always bear in mind that the election is just around the corner. Joseph noted that some party members have been taking a relaxed attitude given less challenging atmosphere after the last election. 'We must step up our efforts and ensure that this seat will remain with PKR,' he added. 'While it has not been ascertained who in Penampang PKR will be the candidate, what is most certain is that PKR will be contesting the seat.' Terrence Siambun won the Moyog seat under the PKR banner in 2013 with total votes of 7, 462 and majority of 1, 682 votes. Anwar Heads To Europe, Brazil For Bilateral Talks, BRICS Summit
Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will embark on a high-level official visit to Italy, France and Brazil from July 1 to 7, aimed at strengthening Malaysia's diplomatic and economic ties with key international partners and representing Malaysia at the 17th BRICS Summit. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the visits to Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro reflect Malaysia's strategic intent to deepen cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, culture and education. Collectively, these three nations recorded RM50.91 billion (US$11.14 billion) in bilateral trade with Malaysia in 2024. In Italy, Anwar is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to discuss economic partnerships and explore joint cultural initiatives. A Business Roundtable and engagements with the local Muslim community and Malaysian diaspora are also on the agenda. In France, he will hold talks with President Emmanuel Macron focused on trade, digital innovation and higher education. Anwar will also deliver a public lecture at Sorbonne University and participate in industry roundtables with major French corporations. From July 5 to 7, Anwar will be in Rio de Janeiro to attend the BRICS Summit, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Representing Malaysia as a BRICS Partner Country and ASEAN Chair for 2025, Anwar will highlight Malaysia's position on multilateralism, artificial intelligence governance, climate action and global health. The PM is accompanied by a business delegation comprising leading Malaysian firms, including Petronas, Khazanah Nasional, Maybank and Sunway Group, seeking to expand investment footprints and forge global partnerships. 'This synergy between government-to-government and business-to-business cooperation ensures that Malaysia remains strategically positioned in global markets,' PM's senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, along with Malaysian Investment Development Authority and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, is coordinating business engagements to facilitate potential joint ventures and investment opportunities. Anwar is expected to return to Malaysia on July 9 and will immediately participate in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur. Nik Nazmi stands firm on Cabinet resignation, cites loss of party mandate
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad is standing by his decision to resign as minister of natural resources and environmental sustainability, effective July 4. He said the move was necessary as he no longer held a full mandate within PKR, adding that leadership must be grounded in trust and accountability. 'It wasn't an easy decision. I had a meaningful job, a strong team at the ministry and office, and the opportunity to work with civil society and the corporate sector. 'But being a minister can trap you in a 'bubble' — with privileges, security escorts, and protocols at every event. I believe that becoming too attached to such a lifestyle can be dangerous. 'At the end of the day, I believe that as a politician, respecting the mandate is important. Without full backing from the party, I found it difficult to continue,' he said in an episode of The Good Cast Show posted on his Instagram today. Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had expressed hope that Nik Nazmi would reconsider and continue serving as minister. Nik Nazmi submitted his resignation letter on May 28. It will take effect on Friday. He said he would continue to support the ministry, including his successor, in the interest of the country and the people.

Ex-NSC DG Abdul Rashid named CEO of MASOC for ASEAN Para Games 2027
KUALA LUMPUR: Former National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Abdul Rashid Yaakub has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) and ASEAN Para Games 2027. The announcement was made by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh in a Facebook post today. Hannah said Abdul Rashid's appointment takes effect today, and his main responsibility will be to lead the secretariat in coordinating all aspects of preparations for the biennial regional games. 'Abdul Rashid, 61, has extensive experience in Malaysian sports, having been directly involved for over 37 years and holding various positions in the NSC before retiring as director-general in early April 2025. 'He also played a key role in assisting MASOC in management during Malaysia's previous hosting of the SEA Games in 2017,' she said. In addition to Kuala Lumpur, the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games will also be co-hosted by three other states, namely Sarawak, Penang and Johor.
