SailGP roars back into action in New York after Rio cancellation
Organisers identified the defect after the Australian boat's wing collapsed in San Francisco in March and carried out repair and upgrade work to remedy the issue on the F50 fleet in time for the highly anticipated New York competition.
"We had almost two months of learning to take from the previous events," said Brazil's twice Olympic champion Martine Grael, SailGP's first-ever female driver.
"We have a lot of changes in our sailing - there are almost too many changes and we know you can only handle a few changes at a time. We're focusing to see what we can adapt here."
The recently added Brazil team hope to move up the standings from 10th as the action kicks off on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET (1700 GMT), two and a half hours earlier than planned due to inclement weather.
The three-times champions Australia, who hold just a one-point advantage over Britain in the standings, want to impress after making headlines off the water, with new A-List co-owners Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds announced this week.
The great equaliser between the celebrity-fronted top dogs and the up-and-comers has been the competition's tech-first approach to sailing, with each of the vessels equipped with 125 sensors continuously feeding data.
"We give the data to everybody," SailGP's Chief Technology Officer Warren Jones told Reuters. "Top teams hate it, but the newer teams love it."
Jones was able to build the robust analytics operation from "a blank sheet of paper" by cherry-picking from billionaire co-founder Larry Ellison's Oracle capabilities.
The hope is that the data points broadcast across the competition can help transform the next generation of fans - newcomers and diehards alike.
"There are the basics - you need to know how fast people are going because then it adds the jeopardy of what's going on," said Jones.
"Then there's people out there who want to know how many tacks they've done and what the tack is compared to the last tack - we can rate that."

Barkley has golfed with Trump and Barack Obama over the last year and the running back attended the White House celebration of the champion Eagles while some teammates – notably star quarterback Jalen Hurts – skipped the ceremony. Barkley visited Trump in April at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and caught a ride with the president to Washington on Air Force One and then to the White House on Marine One. 'He loved it,' Trump said then of Barkley's short flight on the presidential airplane. 'He's a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL.' Barkley, meanwhile, pushed back on social media criticism following the visit. He noted that he had already golfed with Obama. 'Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand,' Barkley posted on X.

Chargers LB Denzel Perryman won't face charges in weapons arrest
August 5 - Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman was released from police custody on Monday, and the Los Angeles District Attorney decided not to move forward with a felony weapons charge, public records showed. Perryman had been held since Friday after he was pulled over by police for vehicle code violations. He was headed to a gun range at the time, TMZ reported. Of the five firearms in his vehicle, two were assault-style rifles that are illegal in California. Although Perryman was scheduled to appear at Inglewood Court on Tuesday, he is free to go as the DA declined to file charges in the case. His arrest will be considered a detention on his record as a result. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters he visited Perryman in jail on Sunday. "Love Denzel," Harbaugh said Monday. "He's always done right. He's never been in trouble. Got a beautiful family, and we'll let the due process play out." Perryman, 32, is entering the second season of his second stint with the Chargers. He registered 55 tackles and one sack in 11 starts for the Chargers in 2024, missing six games with a groin injury. Dodgers activate Max Muncy, place Tommy Edman on IL
August 5 - The Los Angeles Dodgers activated infielder Max Muncy from the injured list but also placed infielder Tommy Edman on the IL on Monday. Muncy, 34, has been sidelined since injuring his left knee during the Dodgers' game against the Chicago White Sox on July 2. Playing at third base, Muncy attempted a leaping catch to snare a throw from catcher Will Smith as Chicago's Michael A. Taylor tried to steal the bag. Taylor's helmet collided with Muncy's leg, and the Dodger immediately collapsed to the ground and clutched his knee. A follow-up MRI, however, revealed no structural damage. Muncy made five rehab appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he recorded five hits, including a home run, in 15 at-bats. He has played in 81 games this season for the Dodgers, recording a .250 batting average, 13 homers and 55 RBIs. The 30-year-old Edman landed on the 15-day IL with a right ankle injury for the second time this season after spraining it in Sunday's game at the Tampa Bay Rays. The 2024 NLCS MVP was hitting .228 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs in 86 games this season, his second with Los Angeles.
