River Plate ease into Argentine quarters after 3-0 win over Barracas
BUENOS AIRES : River Plate secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Argentine Apertura tournament on Monday with a 3-0 home win over Barracas Central at the Mas Monumental stadium.
Paulo Diaz gave River an early advantage when he fired home from close range in the 12th minute and they doubled their lead two minutes before the break when Franco Mastantuono set up Ignacio Fernandez to score.
Fernandez said he was glad to be back in the side.
'I was back as a starter, and I took it in stride, eager to keep improving,' told TNT. 'No one likes to be out, but when it's my turn, I try to do my part and make the most of the moment.
'We know that sometimes it's your turn and sometimes it's not but you have to stick with it and support the team because, at the end of the day, if one person does well everyone does well,' he added.
Marcelo Gallardo's side continued to dominate after the break and thought they had scored the third when Mastantuono set up Fabricio Bustos following a swift counter-attack.
However, the goal was disallowed following a VAR review due to a foul by Kevin Castano on Barracas midfielder Dardo Miloc.
'I think Kevin got the ball back well and Miloc let himself fall, lost the ball and stayed there protesting,' River midfielder Enzo Perez said.
'The referee made the decision and I told him it was a clean challenge and that we got the ball back, but these are quick decisions and there's nothing you can do about it.'
Next it was Barracas' turn to have a goal ruled out when Facundo Bruera headed in Rodrigo Insua's free kick but it was called back for offside.
Marcos Acuna finally added River's third with a superb long-range shot in the closing minutes to set up a meeting with Platense in the next round.

'In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that,' Slot said after the Milan match. 'He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. 'I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that.' Diaz's impending signing gives Bayern a quality replacement for Germany forward Jamal Musiala, who has been ruled out for a 'long period' after he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup this month. The 22-year-old Spanish left-back, who played for Madrid's youth academy before joining Manchester United in 2020, is reported to have cost close to €50 million (US$58 million). 'Real Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alvaro Carreras, who will be under contract with our club for the next six seasons, until 30 June 2031,' said Los Blancos in a statement. The defender played 62 times for Benfica, scoring five goals for the club, including an initial loan spell before they signed him for €6 million from United in 2024. Carreras becomes Madrid's fourth signing of a significant summer rebuild after Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono, at an estimated cost of around €170 million in transfer fees. ‘We're no underdogs': England set to challenge world champs Spain in Euro 2025 final
BASEL, July 27 — England captain Leah Williamson admits that Spain are 'the best at what they do' but is confident her side can compete with the reigning world champions in today's Euro 2025 final. 'They are a fantastic footballing team, they are the best at what they do, and we are very much aware of that but we think we are pretty good in some areas as well. 'We need to be at our best to beat Spain but I think they will need to be at their best to beat us too. 'I think there is a lot of respect between the two teams, and I'd be hesitant to say we are underdogs in this scenario.' England are hoping to retain the European Championship title they won on home soil in 2022, but the match is also a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, in which Spain triumphed 1-0 in Sydney. There is a growing rivalry between the nations, with England winning in extra time when they clashed in the quarter-finals at Euro 2022. The sides have also already faced each other twice this year in the UEFA Nations League, with England winning 1-0 at Wembley in February. Spain avenged that result by claiming a 2-1 victory in Barcelona at the beginning of last month, when Claudia Pina scored twice after Alessia Russo had given England the lead.
