2nd person dies at Ontario beach after diving into shallow water: police
Police say a 44-year-old has died after diving from a vessel into shallow water at Ipperwash Beach on Lake Huron. Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to a call at about 6:20 p.m. on Sunday in the municipality of Lambton Shores and found an unresponsive individual on the beach. Lambton County OPP say the investigation into the 44-year-old's death is ongoing and ask anyone with information to contact police. Create Account The Special Investigations Unit says OPP officers were at Anicinabe Park on the afternoon of June 25, 2024, when a man doused himself with gasoline, picked up two large knives then set fire to a food concession. The SIU says the man was standing close to the fire when officers asked him to move away so it could be extinguished. It says the man stepped toward firefighters while brandishing knives, and a police officer then shot the man with a rifle. The agency says the man was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery for bullet wounds to his chest and abdomen but later died. The SIU says the officer's use of gunfire constituted reasonable force, and there's no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in the case. Special Investigations Unit called in after man arrested at Brantford gas station

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Arlyn McAdorey The Special Investigations Unit is looking into the circumstances surrounding an arrest in Brantford. According to a news release from the SIU, officers with the Brantford Police Service were called to a gas station at 206 Henry Street in Brantford on Tuesday. They were told a man was threatening people with a knife. During the arrest, an officer discharged an ARWEN and hit the 41-year-old man, but he was not seriously injured. ARWEN stands for Anti-Riot Weapon ENfield. It is a non-lethal firearm that can shoot impact batons, chemical irritant rounds and smoke munitions to subdue people. The SIU was called in because an ARWEN is considered a firearm. The SIU investigates all police situations that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
