Opportunities for Asean amidst US's tariff tantrum: Asean-BAC head

HANOI: Southeast Asian countries can capitalise on the rollout of tariffs and other US policies by re-evaluating overlooked relations with other trade partners and opening their doors to international students, according to Tan Sri Nazir Razak, chairman of the Asean Business Advisory Council (Asean-BAC) - Asean's business lobby.
Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported, Nazir, who leads the council during Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship in 2025, emphasised the importance of strengthening intra-regional economic ties by boosting trade and investment within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
He called for forging closer partnerships with other countries in the world such as China, India and Japan.
The Asean-BAC head also proposed Asean and Japan collaborate in fields such as artificial intelligence and energy, as both have the potential to work together and build capacity in this area.

Pushing for Asean AI safety amid global turmoil

RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia is championing the establishment of an Asean AI Safety Network, a regional initiative aimed at strengthening governance and capacity in this domain, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister, as the current Asean chair, stated that Malaysia welcomed BRICS' efforts in AI Governance. 'We support a vision of artificial intelligence that serves development, not domination – one that embeds ethics, reduces inequality and respects human dignity,' he said at the BRICS Leaders' Summit at the Museum of Modern Art here on Sunday. Also in attendance were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Earlier, the Prime Minister was received by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva upon arrival. Anwar noted the summit was held as the international order faced severe strain. The institutions meant to uphold cooperation were 'faltering under the weight of new realities', he added. 'Trade is increasingly shaped by politics. Technology is framed by security. And the rules that once governed global engagement are being selectively applied or ignored,' he said. Malaysia's position is straightforward: multilateralism is vital for global stability, shared prosperity and sovereign dignity, he said. The Prime Minister said that for multilateralism to endure, it must do more than express common values. 'It must deliver tangible outcomes. It must respond to the realities of a world where markets are fragmenting faster than rules can adapt.' Anwar stated that Asean was not passive and that economic fragmentation was intensifying - tariffs, decoupling and shifting alliances were reshaping trade flows once thought stable. Malaysia, he said, was advancing a strategy that favoured diversification over dependency, resilience over fragility and regional agency over external prescription. 'We therefore welcome BRICS' commitment to an inclusive, rules-based trading system. 'Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship theme of 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' aligns closely with those priorities,' he added. Anwar said the party which shaped the digital future was the question now, with technology now splitting along geopolitical lines. 'Export controls, national security restrictions and diverging standards are creating parallel systems,' he added. Anwar also called for an end to the genocide in Gaza and atrocities in Iran.

PM Anwar highlights success of visits to Italy, France, Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim declared his official visits to Italy, France, and Brazil a success, achieving key objectives in trade, investment, and diplomatic relations. The visits, which began on July 1, reinforced bilateral ties and positioned Malaysia as a competitive player ahead of its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025. Anwar highlighted that the trip generated over RM12 billion in potential investments, with Italy contributing RM8 billion and France RM4 billion. The delegation included five Cabinet ministers and representatives from major Malaysian corporations such as Petronas, Maybank, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). In Italy, discussions with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni focused on expanding economic cooperation, while geopolitical concerns, including the crisis in Gaza, were also addressed. Anwar noted that Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva shared Malaysia's stance on ending violence in Palestine. Responding to criticism over aircraft purchases benefiting European manufacturers, Anwar clarified that Malaysia aims to become a regional hub for aviation services, including maintenance and training. The government seeks long-term gains from partnerships with Airbus and Embraer. In Brazil, Anwar was invited to speak at the BRICS Business Forum, where he advocated for fairer global economic policies and raised concerns about AI governance. He also met leaders from India, Vietnam, Egypt, and South Africa, discussing potential collaborations. Malaysia's potential membership in the New Development Bank was also explored following talks with its president, Dilma Rousseff. Anwar stated that Bank Negara Malaysia would assess the benefits before any decision is made. - Bernama
