Al-ahli Wins Its First Asian Champions League Title
The star-studded Jeddah team, playing at home in front of 60,000 fans at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, deserved what was a comfortable victory and completed an unbeaten tournament.
First-half goals from Galeno and Franck Kessie put the two-time beaten finalist in control against the five-time Japanese champion.
The tournament quarterfinals, semifinals and final were staged in Jeddah and Al-Ahli rode a wave of support.
The hosts were on top early and made the breakthrough after 35 minutes. Roberto Firmino fed Galeno outside the area and the Brazilian winger, signed from Porto in January for around $55 million, sent a curling shot into the top corner.
Three minutes before the break, Firmino crossed from the right for Kessie, and the former AC Milan and Barcelona midfielder headed home from close range. Firmino won the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.

Kawasaki, which knocked out Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr in the semifinals to reach its first final, pressured after the restart but struggled to create clear chances against a team full of big-game experience.
Firmino, signed from Liverpool in 2023, is a past UEFA Champions League winner, as are his teammates Riyad Mahrez and Edouard Mendy, who lifted the trophy with Manchester City and Chelsea respectively.
Mahrez, with nine goals in the tournament, went close to adding a third late in the final, firing just wide.
The home fans were already celebrating.
'We are so proud. Once we knew that the final eight would be in Jeddah, it was our goal to be champions in front of our fans,' Al-Ahli goalkeeper Mendy said.
'Since I came here 18 months ago, they have supported us so much. As I said when I signed, it was to make history, to win trophies and to make this club as big as it was before.'
Al-Ahli is the third Saudi club to win the Champions League after Jeddah rival Al-Ittihad and Riyadh's Al-Hilal.

BOSTON (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is expected to start on the mound Wednesday as he continues his buildup from elbow surgery that kept him from pitching all last season. Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday before the Dodgers faced the Boston Red Sox in the finale of their three-game series that the plan is for Ohtani to work four innings at Cincinnati, with an off day to recover before hitting in a game. With the Japanese superstar working his way back along with left-hander Blake Snell, who pitched 4 2/3 innings on Saturday in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers will be using a six-man rotation. They currently have Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Emmet Sheehan in the rotation. 'Shohei is going to go on Wednesday and then he'll probably pitch the following Wednesday, so that probably lends itself to the six-man,' Roberts said. In Ohtani's last start, he allowed one run and four hits in three innings against Minnesota on July 22. He struck out three and walked one, throwing 46 pitches, 30 for strikes. Roberts feels like this season is sort of a rehab year in the big leagues and doesn't foresee the team extending Ohtani's workload deep into games for a while. 'I think this whole year on the pitching side is sort of rehab, maintenance,' he said. 'We're not going to have the reins off where we're going to say: 'Hey you can go 110 pitches.' I don't see that happening for quite some time. I think that staying at four (innings) for a bit, then build up to five and we'll see where we can go from there.' Also Sunday, the club activated right-handed reliever Blake Treinen from the injured list and recalled left-hander Justin Wrobleski. The 37-year-old Treinen was a big part of last season's run to the World Series title, picking up two victories in the Series against the New York Yankees. He has been sidelined since April 19 because of forearm tightness. 'I think the only thing I'm going to be mindful of is the up-down,' Roberts said on Treinen's usage. 'To come into an inning of leverage, I have no problem.' Wrobleski, 25, is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season. He's a starter now, but Roberts said he'll work out of the bullpen. 'Just trying to get a quality arm, get some length, potentially using him in two-inning stints, three-inning stints is going to be helpful for our 'pen," Roberts said. 'The goal is to get the best pitchers on your roster in whatever role.' BOSTON (AP) — Roman Anthony lined a fly ball over drawn-in center fielder Chas McCormick's head to score the automatic runner from third, and the Boston Red Sox rallied in the 10th inning to beat the new-look Houston Astros 2-1 on Friday night. Boston trailed 1-0 on Christian Walker's second-inning home run before tying it in the seventh on Wilyer Abreu's sacrifice fly. Mike Yastrzemski homers in his first at bat with Royals after they acquired him at trade deadline
TORONTO (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski made quite the early impression on his new teammates by homering in his first plate appearance with the Kansas City Royals on Friday, a day after they acquired him from the San Francisco Giants. Yastrzemski hit a 370-foot blast over the wall in right-center field while facing Kevin Gausman in the second inning of the Royals' game against the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. His two-run shot gave the Royals a 2-1 lead. The Royals gave up minor league pitcher Yunior Marte in the trade that brought Yastrzemski to Kansas City. Yastrzemski, who is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, was batting .231 with a .330 on-base percentage, .355 slugging percentage, eight homers, 28 RBIs and six steals in 96 games with the Giants. The 34-year-old Yastrzemski had spent his entire major league career with San Francisco. The Giants acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles in March 2019, and he made his major league debut later that year. ___
