'Disorganised crime': teens may have stabbed wrong man
Luke Manassa was stabbed outside a house in Pemulwuy in Sydney's west on June 26 by two masked assailants armed with machetes who were lying in wait in the driveway.
Mr Manassa tried to escape to his ute and drive away but only travelled a few hundred metres before being overcome by his injuries and dying at the scene.
Two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were due to face a children's court charged with murder on Friday.
The pair were arrested on Thursday morning but cannot be identified due to their age.
The 17-year-old was on bail when Mr Manassa was killed.
Detective Superintendent Joseph Doueihi said the teens were known to police for past violent behaviour and association with street gangs.
"We believe that these younger offenders were contracted by someone to conduct this killing," Det Supt Doueihi told reporters.
But there was no evidence linking Mr Manassa's alleged killers to the wider spate of organised crime violence in Sydney.
"It's a very amateurish offence by these offenders," Det Supt Doueihi said.
"If anything, I'd call it disorganised crime."
Mr Manassa's family are adamant he was not the intended victim and police confirmed he was not known to authorities prior to his death.
He did not live at the house he arrived at when he was stabbed but visited there occasionally.
"The occupants of that location are known to Luke and are also known to NSW Police," Det Supt Doueihi said.
Police have seized a red Kia the teens allegedly used to flee the scene.
The pair are the latest in a string of young people allegedly caught up in Sydney's organised crime wave.
On Wednesday, two 15-year-old boys were charged over two shootings in Sydney's southwest in June, one of which also involved a potential case of mistaken identity.
"The problem is that these young children don't understand the consequences of their actions," Det Supt Doueihi said.
"They could end up dead themselves, or they could be victims of some form of retaliation by the people that they tried to target."
The killing of plumber John Versace at Condell Park in May was another high-profile case of suspected mistaken identity.

A trial date has been set for a Detroit man charged in the murder of prominent Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. Desmond Burks, 34, appeared in court Thursday for a formal arraignment after being bound over for trial last week. Burks will head to trial on Jan. 5, 2026. Following Hoover's murder, Wayne County prosecutors say fraudulent transactions were reportedly made using the doctor's various bank accounts, and more than $30,000 was stolen from his accounts, as well as a Range Rover and two watches valued at $13,500. Authorities say Burks was seen on surveillance footage driving Hoover's Range Rover in the days following the doctor's murder. Prosecutors allege that text messages between Burks and Hoover established that the two were in an intimate relationship. Brian Douglas, a longtime friend of Hoover's, has attended nearly every one of Burks' court appearances, including Thursday's arraignment. He says Hoover's family and friends are finally one step closer to getting justice. "I was devastated when I heard. I was devastated because we almost reconnected, and we didn't," Douglas said. "When I saw who was victimized, and I heard who that person was, and I realized that person didn't deserve that, there was nothing else I could do but show up." Douglas says that after more than two years since his friend's murder, he still questions why such a good human being was taken away. "The point of it is, he should still be here," Douglas said. "He was murdered. He shouldn't have been murdered."

Man Attempts to Set Fire to a Melbourne Synagogue
A man tried to set a centuries-old synagogue in East Melbourne, Australia, on fire on Friday, officials said, the latest in a spell of anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim incidents in the country since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. 5 hospitalized including 3 children after a stabbing, fire in Logan Square. Woman in custody
Five people, including three children, were taken to the hospital after a stabbing and fire in the Logan Square neighborhood. It happened Friday morning in the 3600 block of West Palmer Street. Chicago fire sources said one child was stabbed and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The other two children were taken to a hospital in an unknown condition. A neighboring adult was also taken to the hospital in serious condition. The ages and genders of the victims were not released.
