Indiramma housing scheme: 13,266 homes sanctioned for Chenchu tribals across Telangana, says minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy

Speaking at public meetings in Atchampet and Kollapur assembly constituencies, where sanction letters were distributed to 536 Chenchu tribal families, Ponguleti, accompanied by tourism minister Jupally Krishna Rao, emphasised the govt's commitment to uplifting the most marginalised.
He announced that a total of 13,266 Indiramma houses will be sanctioned to Chenchu tribals across the state in saturation mode.
"Every eligible poor family will now realize their dream of owning a home. The govt is committed to sanctioning houses to all poor families in a phased manner," Ponguleti said.
"The Chenchus, who mostly lived in huts and makeshift homes, will finally get permanent houses-a long-cherished dream now becoming reality," he said.
Additionally, the govt is offering free sand and other construction-related support, and releases funds every Monday based on the stage-wise progress of construction.

Cabinet approves 42% reservation for BCs in local bodies polls
Fulfilling a long-pending demand and its pre-poll promise, the Congress government made a historic step towards social justice approving 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in upcoming local body elections. The Telangana Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, approved the decision after a marathon five-hour meeting, on Thursday. The Advocate-General was specially invited to the Cabinet to advise on legal implications surrounding the increased quota. Confident in its legal position, the Cabinet approved going ahead with the elections under the new reservation framework, said Revenue and I&PR Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar while briefing the newspersons at the Secretariat. Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao, Adluri Laxman and Srihari Mudhiraj were also present. Mr. Ponnam Prabhakar said the decision comes in the backdrop of the Kamareddy BC Declaration made on February 4, 2024, and follows up on the government's earlier commitment, reiterated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, to enhance BC representation. He said various judgments on the increase in reservations were positive as long as they were increased after a scientific study with empirical data. The move is based on the findings of the Caste Survey, for which a Bill was introduced in the Assembly and forwarded to the Centre. Despite delays from the Union government, which raised multiple queries, the Telangana government stood firm, with both the Chief Minister and BC Welfare Minister actively pursuing the matter in New Delhi, Mr. Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said. He said the Cabinet also addressed the High Court's directive to complete local body elections within three months. Accordingly, an amendment to the Panchayat Raj Act, 2018 would be made to facilitate the enhanced reservations. One lakh jobs Mr. Prabhakar said the recruitment process for another 17,084 jobs is in various stages, and the Cabinet discussed to issue notifications for 22,033 new jobs to take the total recruitment to one lakh jobs before March next. The government has already filled 60,000 jobs. In another key decision, the Cabinet approved the establishment of Amity University and St. Mary Rehabilitation University as private universities, with 50% reservation for local students. St. Mary's University will focus on skill development programmes, positioning itself as a non-conventional university. Mr. Srinivas Reddy said the 19th Cabinet held on Thursday discussed the 327 issues across 18 meetings, with 321 of them ratified. Of these, 96% have already reached the implementation stage, and the Chief Minister issued firm directives to expedite the remaining decisions. He said a quarterly review mechanism will also be instituted to evaluate the progress of decisions taken in the meetings in that quarter. Agricultural projects The Cabinet also reviewed incomplete irrigation projects where 98% expenditure has been incurred but no irrigation benefits have been realised. The government decided to fast-track land acquisition and complete these projects at the earliest. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy presented a detailed report on the same. Animal Husbandry Minister Srihari Mudiraj said a new policy for Goshalas would be developed soon, and the meeting discussed the current conditions in the approximately 300 Goshalas across the State. A modern Goshala will be developed at Yadagirigutta as a model facility. In addition, the government will release 82 crore fishlings to support the rural economy and fisheries sector.

Telangana Cabinet to implement 42% quota for Backward Classes in local body elections
Telangana government's 19th Cabinet has decided to implement 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes in the upcoming local body elections. This comes nearly four months after the Telangana Assembly passed two key legislations clearing the way for 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes in government jobs, educational institutions and urban and rural local body polls. Cabinet ministers Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar said at a press briefing held in Hyderabad Thursday that an ordinance to this effect will be promulgated soon. Before taking the decision, the advocate general of the state was also consulted by the Cabinet, Srinivas Reddy said. Local body elections in Telangana will have to be held within three months, according to the Telangana High Court's directions. The Bills passed by the Telangana Assembly in March were titled the Telangana Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of seats in educational institutions and of appointments for posts in services under the state) Bill, 2025, and the Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of seats in urban and rural local bodies) Bill, 2025. It was passed months after the state government's caste survey found that the BCs — including Muslim caste groups — form 56.33 percent of the state's population. The Bills were then sent to Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, who has referred them to President Droupadi Murmu. Even if the state were to promulgate an ordinance, governor's assent will be required. 'We have taken all legal precautions to make sure that the ordinance is legally sound,' Srinivas Reddy said Thursday. The ordinance will effectively amend the state's Panchayat Raj Act – 2018, to increase the reservation for BCs to 42 percent. The reservation for BCs is expected to face a legal challenge as implementation of this would breach the 49 percent reservation cap set by the Supreme Court of India. To breach this cap, state's bills will have to be included in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution, similar to Tamil Nadu, where the reservation cap has been increased to 69 percent.

Where are the Indiramma houses, asks BJP
The BJP has demanded the Congress government to make it clear if it is really committed to the Indiramma housing scheme to the intended beneficiaries from among the poor. Talking to the media on Wednesday at the State office, vice president Y. Lakshminarayana has accused the government of merely issuing 'receipts' to the identified beneficiaries with the house construction or allotment nowhere in sight despite the promise of providing houses in each constituency every year. 'It has been 18 months since the government has come to power. Are the Ministers concerned really serious about allotting houses or is it going to become another false promise,' he questioned. The BJP leader also criticised the Cabinet Ministers for their 'photo-ops' in having food with the beneficiaries of the fine rice provision as if the State government has been solely funding the scheme. The fact is that five of the six kilos being given to the people through ration shops comes from the central pool, he said. Both the Congress and BRS leaders are involved in the drama of slanging matches over who is more corrupt despite being well aware of the truth as they only want to fool the people, he said. Mr. Lakshminarayana said the general feeling is that the government is not serious about recovering the looted public money in several 'scams' under the previous regime. He also wanted proper implementation of Ayushman Bharat medical insurance scheme in all hospitals.
