Traders threaten strike over govt-set prices

Express Tribune17-02-2025
RAWALPINDI:
The Grocery Merchants Association has announced a complete halt in the sale of all essential grocery items with government-mandated prices from April 1.
However, in respect of Ramazan and Eidul Fitr, the protest has been postponed until after the festival.
The government has refused to accept the association's demands, according to its president, Saleem Parvez Butt.
He stated that while officials were presented with their grievances, they appeared powerless to take action.
"There has never been a proper mechanism to regulate the prices of essential commodities in Pakistan's 77-year history," Butt said. "Retailers already operate on minimal profit margins.
For example, we are given a mere Rs3 profit per kilogram of sugar, while transportation and handling costs amount to Rs12 per kg. This is unsustainable."
The association has vowed to escalate protests in April.
In the first phase, all government-regulated items, including sugar, will be completely withdrawn from sale. "Let the Deputy Commissioners set up stalls outside their offices to sell these products," Butt added.

LHC orders Punjab to fix wheat price

LHC's Justice Sultan Tanvir Ahmad, while announcing a reserved verdict on the petition filed by Kisan Board President Zafar Hussain regarding the non-fixation of wheat prices, has directed the Punjab government to implement the law for setting wheat prices. The court also included in its decision the report from the Agriculture Department regarding the cost per maund — 40 kg — of wheat. It noted that the government lawyer stated that a law has been enacted for price determination. However, it said, the government institutions failed to perform their constitutional role. Citing an agriculture department's report, it said the cost per 40kg of wheat this year is Rs3,533. The order stated that government institutions have acknowledged that wheat is a vital component of food security. The Kisan Board president had approached the LHC on April 8, 2025, over the failure of the provincial government to set wheat prices.

Gold up Rs3,700/tola despite global dip

Listen to article Gold prices in Pakistan surged on Wednesday, bucking the global trend where prices eased following a US-Japan trade agreement that calmed investor nerves. Meanwhile, silver prices soared to the highest level since September 2011, driven by strong industrial demand and supply constraints. According to the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association, the price of gold per tola rose Rs3,700 to reach Rs364,900 in the local market. Similarly, the rate for 10 grams of gold climbed Rs3,171 to Rs312,842. In contrast, international gold markets dipped as easing geopolitical tensions shifted sentiment away from safe-haven assets. Spot gold was down 0.6% at $3,412.03 per ounce, as of 1351 GMT, after hitting its highest point since June 16 earlier in the session. Spot silver rose 0.2% to $39.35 per ounce, a near 14-year peak. Commenting on the trend, Interactive Commodities Director Adnan Agar noted, "Gold hit a high of $3,438 and low of $3,405, with the market later positioning around $3,415. Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee appreciated against the US dollar, rising 0.07% in the inter-bank market. By the end of trading, the rupee closed at 284.76, up 21 paisa compared to Tuesday's close at 284.97.
