Two dead after crashes in Canterbury and Tasman

Two people have died after separate South Island crashes on Friday night.
A person died after a crash in Leeston in Canterbury after emergency services were called to reports of a vehicle colliding with two pedestrians at the intersection of Leeston and Lakes Road and Harts Road at 7.40pm.
A police spokesperson said one person died at the scene while another was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
They said a scene examination was conducted and police were working to determine the cause of the crash.
A person died after a two-vehicle crash near Moutere in the Tasman District.
Police said they were called to State Highway 1 near Jellicoe Point at about 7.45pm on Friday but the person died at the scene of the crash.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing, police said.

Woman arrested after blaze at Christchurch church

Fire and Emergency were called to the church on Atlantis Street in New Brighton after the fire alarm went off at about 2:30pm today. Three fire trucks responded to the call, but crews found the fire well alight and called two more for backup. The blaze was soon extinguished and an RNZ reporter at the scene said the exterior of the church appeared undamaged. Police also responded to the fire and said a woman had been arrested. Fire investigators are also at the scene.

Person in hospital after assault at public pool in Dunedin
Photo: One person is in hospital following an assault at a public pool in Dunedin. Emergency services were called to Moana Pool on Littlebourne Road around 3.15pm. Police said one person has been arrested and a second person with injuries taken to hospital after reports of a grievous assault. Cordons are in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area. A police spokesperson said the public may see an increased police presence while enquiries are ongoing. Pool staff declined to comment. RNZ has contacted the Dunedin City Council. More to come... Man dies after hunting incident on Stewart Island, police investigation launched
