Bengaluru Police Seize 4,000 kg of Drugs Worth Rs 45 Crore in a Year
Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Thursday that Bengaluru police found 4,000 kg of ganja and other drugs worth Rs 45 crore in one year.
He spoke at a program called 'Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs' at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. This program was for the International Day against Drugs.
Parameshwara said more than 200 foreign drug sellers were sent back to their countries. Police are working with a special office to stop foreign drug sellers.
The police are teaching students about the bad effects of drugs. They visit schools and colleges every month. All colleges must make groups to stop drugs.
More than 650,000 students in Karnataka learned about drugs from the police. At the event, 50,000 students from 500 colleges joined online and promised not to use drugs.
Top police officers like State Police Chief MA Saleem and Bengaluru City Police Chief Seemant Kumar Singh were at the event.

Life sentence is rule, death exception, says Cal HC, spares convict the noose
Kolkata: Life sentence was the rule and death an exception, the Calcutta High Court observed on Thursday as it commuted the death sentence awarded to a 33-year-old man convicted of murdering a woman in a hotel room in Bakkhali in 2018 to life term. The division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md Shabbar Rashidi also said that the case did not fall in the 'rarest of rare' category and sentenced Samar Patra to life imprisonment saying even though his involvement in the murder had been established beyond doubt, he could still be reformed. Patra had been booked under section 302 IPC dealing with murder that attracts death sentence or life imprisonment along with a fine. A lower court had on March 22, 2023 convicted him of the murder and awarded a death sentence along with a fine of Rs 5,000. The victim and Patra had checked into the hotel together on April 11, 2018. When they did not respond to repeated calls the next day, the hotel manager informed police and the woman was found dead on the bed. The ventilation window in the attached washroom was found broken and Patra was missing. An autopsy revealed the victim had died due to strangulation by ligature, which was ante mortem and homicidal in nature. After his arrest, Patra claimed he found the woman hanging from the ceiling fan when he woke up at night, brought down the body but fled as he was terrified. "As a man of ordinary prudence, it was expected that the appellant should have called upon officials of the hotel and reported the matter to police," the HC observed while upholding his conviction. "The appellant is aged about 33 years. Nothing of unfavourable behaviour has been reported against the appellant, which does not rule out the possibility of reform. The evidence on record does not suggest that the murder of the victim was pre-planned or committed with premeditation and extreme brutality. Rather, the evidence on record shows that the appellant and the victim had visited and stayed together in the hotel on previous occasions as well. Such circumstances belie the existence of any previous enmity between them," the bench held.

Ghaziabad: A 35-year-old man, carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head, was arrested in connection with the murder of businessman and hotelier outside a highrise in Raj Nagar Extension on June 1. It was around 9.30pm on June 1 when Dagar was shot dead by armed assailants. His brother-in-law Avinash, who suffered a bullet wound to his leg, identified Dagar's business partner Nagendra Chaudhary and three others — Mohit Chaudhary, Ritesh Bindal, and Mantri — as the attackers in his police complaint. Mohit and Ritesh had previously been arrested in the case. An FIR was registered against seven accused, including two unidentified persons, under various BNS sections such as murder, attempt to murder, and rioting with deadly weapons. According to Poonam Mishra, ACP of Nandgram, they received a tip-off about Mantri's movements and arrested him from near a cemetery on Pusta Road while he was on his way towards Hindon metro station. Mantri, who fled the scene in his silver i10 (HR26CZ-9628), was finally caught while attempting to meet his brother on Friday.

Insurance scam busted, 7 held in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad: Seven persons were arrested on Friday for operating a fake insurance policy racket that targeted over 1,500 people nationwide. Two suspects, former employees of a Noida call centre, allegedly stole customer data and contacted victims with fake promotional offers. The group created counterfeit receipts using specialised software after receiving payments from victims. They opened their office in a car and earned approximately Rs 4.5 crores through the fraud. Police identified the prime suspects as Aman Aggarwal (29) and Rahul Sharma (23). The five other accused were identified as Aftab Alam (25), Rahul Yadav (30), Deepak Singh (25), Garvit Tyagi (24) and Jagjit Singh (26). Alok Priyadarshi, additional CP of Ghaziabad, told TOI that Aman and Rahul worked at HAXR Company in Noida in 2021. This company was an authorised centre for various insurance policies from companies like Reliance, Bharti Hexa, Cigna TTK, HDFC, and Bajaj.
