Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara launches Raksha QR code to combat drug abuse
BENGALURU: To tackle the drug menace in Karnataka, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara launched the Raksha QR code on Thursday, enabling citizens to anonymously report instances of drug trafficking and usage. The initiative was launched as part of the 66th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held at Kanteerava Stadium. Parameshwara also virtually gave permission to destroy 143.774 kg of various types of drugs valued at Rs 45 crore, seized by the Bengaluru City Police. The drugs were scientifically destructed at a facility in Hoskote. Meanwhile, thousands, including students, participated in the event, where they took an oath committing to a drug-free lifestyle. Parameshwara urged students not to ruin their future by falling into drug abuse. He said that drugs worth Rs 45 crore were seized in the past year and over 200 foreigners involved in drug trade were deported. 'We are running awareness programmes to educate the youth. If such activities continue despite warnings, strict legal action will follow,' he said, adding that 6.5 lakh students have been sensitised and police officers have been directed to visit educational institutions monthly, with each college required to form an anti-drug committee.

Bengaluru Police Seize 4,000 kg of Drugs Worth Rs 45 Crore in a Year
Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Thursday that Bengaluru police found 4,000 kg of ganja and other drugs worth Rs 45 crore in one year. He spoke at a program called 'Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs' at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. This program was for the International Day against Drugs. Parameshwara said more than 200 foreign drug sellers were sent back to their countries. Police are working with a special office to stop foreign drug sellers. The police are teaching students about the bad effects of drugs. They visit schools and colleges every month. All colleges must make groups to stop drugs. More than 650,000 students in Karnataka learned about drugs from the police. At the event, 50,000 students from 500 colleges joined online and promised not to use drugs. Top police officers like State Police Chief MA Saleem and Bengaluru City Police Chief Seemant Kumar Singh were at the event.

Bengaluru: Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday urged students not to ruin their lives by getting addicted to drugs, as they have a bright future ahead. He was speaking after inaugurating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event organised by the Bengaluru City Police at the Kanteerava Stadium here. Over the past year, narcotics worth Rs 45 crore, including 4,000 kg of marijuana, have been seized, the minister said. Noting the involvement of foreign students in the drug trade, he said that more than 200 foreign nationals have been deported. Parameshwara stated that there is a global movement against drug and human trafficking, and efforts are being made to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. People need to understand both the physical and psychological harm caused by drugs, he underlined. Stating that legal action is being taken to curb drug rackets, the minister said law enforcement alone is not enough. Programmes are being developed to awaken the minds of the youth and to convey messages in a way that resonates with them, he said. If individuals continue drug activities even after awareness efforts, strict legal action will be taken, he warned. According to Parameshwara, in some states, assets of drug peddlers are being confiscated and action is being taken under the Goonda Act. In the previous legislative session, the chief minister declared to make Karnataka drug-free. Recalling how Punjab was once referred to as 'Udta Punjab' due to the severe impact of drugs, he said such a situation will not be allowed in Karnataka. The minister said even stricter measures will be taken to eliminate drug activities. Awareness campaigns have reached 6.5 lakh students across Karnataka. 'Students have a bright future and should not ruin their lives by getting addicted to drugs,' Parameshwara said.

The Bengaluru City Police carried out raids in several bars and restaurants in the West Zone of the city and discovered numerous violations, including the 'provocative' attire of female staff and breaches of health, excise, and other regulations, ANI reported citing officials. The raids were conducted after the Bengaluru Police Commissioner received details on illegal activities at certain establishments, the report said, citing a statement. The bars and restaurants are located under the jurisdiction of Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park, and Ashoknagar Police Stations, where 11 special police teams were formed to conduct the probe. The police found that 19 bars and restaurants had violated the regulations by hiring female workers dressed in 'provocative' attire who stood too close to the tables of the customer in an 'indecent' manner. Other violations included the absence of designated female security personnel, poor cleanliness in the kitchen, a lack of a proper smoking area and these places operating beyond allowed hours. Meanwhile, customers found violating COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) regulations were fined immediately. Reports have been sent to the respective police stations for additional legal measures against the owners of the bars and restaurants. Further, the police also found violations related to the health and excise departments. The relevant departments have been informed about the violations and have been asked to take action. Close monitoring of these commercial entities will persist in the coming days. If they violate regulations again, their licenses will be revoked, the report said. If the public experiences any inconvenience or observes any such violations, they can call the helpline number/Namma 112. The identity of informants will remain confidential, the report quoted the release. The raids were headed by C Vamsi Krishna, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, West Zone and S Girish, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Division, including officers and staff from the Central and West Divisions as part of the 11 special police teams.

Acting on the information, 11 special police teams were mobilized to conduct checks in areas falling under the Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park, and Ashoknagar police station limits. Multiple violations found at 19 establishments During the operation, 19 establishments were found flouting various rules. One of the most alarming violations involved the illegal employment of women staff, who were allegedly dressed provocatively and engaging with customers inappropriately. Many of these places lacked designated female security personnel, and several kitchens were found in unhygienic conditions. In an appeal to the public, Bengaluru Police urged citizens to report any such illegal activities or inconveniences through Namma 112.
