Moment cavers embark on dramatic rescue mission after sheep falls down 90ft fissure

This is the dramatic moment a team of brave cavers took on an epic rescue mission after a sheep fell down a 90ft drop. William Burnett, Chris Arthur and Ami Stidolph fashioned a makeshift sling out of their ropes to lift the female sheep to safety on Sunday. The three cavers were exploring one of their favourite underground routes when Mr Arthur spotted the animal from above. The sheep had taken a huge tumble as the group had descended around 90ft into the cave before spotting the helpless animal. What started as a nice day out at New Rift Pot, Masongill, North Yorkshire, suddenly turned into an hour and a half rescue mission to save the sheep they named Beryl. The members of Kendal Caving Club were careful to not startle the sheep, which would cause it to drop down even further into the abyss. The group slowly abseiled down to the animal's level before attaching her to the harness. Fortunately, the sheep remained calm throughout the mission. After 90 excruciating minutes, Beryl was returned safely to the surface. Mr Burnett, 33, said: 'Chris was up first to rig and quickly got to work scrambling down the entrance climb to the pitch head, closely followed by me and Ami bringing up the rear. 'It wasn't long at all before Chris stopped dead in his tracks and was staring down at something below. 'Low and behold, the rough shape of a sheep's back could be spotted at the bottom of the pitch; it must have taken a tumble from above the entrance into the rift and then at least one other to get to where it was. 'Beryl just sat in her 'harness' completely unfazed with the most chilled out expression on her face. 'On the surface, Beryl had a new lease of life and kicked up a fight whilst Chris was taking off her harness - perhaps she wasn't done with New Rift Pot just yet.'

Dog trapped underground for four days rescued

A dog trapped for four days in a badger sett was reunited with its owners after a search involving drones, firefighters, search dogs and volunteers. Mandy McGrath was walking her Lakeland terrier Sherlock at Brampton's Ridgeway Woods, near Carlisle, when she lost sight of him as he chased a rabbit. Suspecting he was stuck underground, she called her husband Mike for help, sparking a long search operation involving a Middlesbrough-based rescuer. "The hardest thing to deal with was that you've got this little thing who's entirely dependant on you to help them and take care of them. I was unable to do any of that for those four days and it's absolutely heartbreaking," said Mr McGrath. It took countless attempts to locate the terrier before he was freed last week from the inactive badger sett, 6ft (1.8m) underground. Gordon Bottomley from Middlesbrough, a volunteer with the Fell and Moorland Terrier Club, managed to find and safely extricate Sherlock, with help from his own terrier Shrek who is trained to search. "To see someone's beloved pet come out and their reaction - the grin was from ear to ear," said Mr Bottomley, who owns 12 terriers and volunteers for the club which specialised in underground search and rescue of working dogs. "The terrier is the only dog that will go below ground and seek out vermin and that's why, over hundreds of years, they've been bred for that purpose," Mr Bottomley explained. Mr and Mrs McGrath were relieved their pooch, which they have owned for four and a half years, had survived the ordeal. Friends of the couple were initially drafted in to look for Sherlock, using drones and their own dogs to help look around the area where his tracker last detected him above ground. It wasn't until a day later that they managed to get a vet out to confirm the badger sett where they believed he was trapped was inactive - a requirement for firefighters to be able to intervene. But despite using a thermal imaging camera, the fire service also struggled to detect the terrier. On the third day of the search, a hole was dug near Sherlock's last known location after the gamekeepers' dog, fitted with a special tracker, made another attempt at finding him. This proved to be a vital move as, although Sherlock was not found there, it provided ventilation to the terrier a few feet away, which rescuers said was likely to have kept him alive. "Had that not been done, we might have been too late because of the tightness of the hole," Mr McGrath said. He said Sherlock likely got his face stuck in the hole while chasing a rabbit and became unable to turn around or backtrack due to the sandy soil. He added: "Claustrophobia is my worst nightmare, so I wasn't sleeping well, I know my wife wasn't sleeping well." Their efforts were followed on social media by the couple's friends around the world, from South Africa to Australia, as well as worried locals who joined the search. "It's extraordinary," Mr McGrath said. "You suddenly find out just how interested people are in helping, particularly those who've got dogs and are familiar with the kind of feelings you might have." Volunteers rescue badger after Braintree slurry pit fall

A badger had to be rescued after it fell into a slurry pit at a sewage works and was unable to escape. Volunteers from the North East Essex Badger Group were called to the site in the Braintree area at about 08:00 BST on slurry was so deep the female was unable to stand up and was "slumping down in exhaustion" on their arrival 15 minutes later. Group chairman Renee Hockley-Byam said it was hauled out with a grasper, "growling and not at all happy" and it "managed to slip out and escape". "Ideally, we'd have cleaned it up before we released, but it didn't want to be cleaned up and off it shot to its sett," she said. "Fingers crossed it's OK." The sewage works is next to a badger sett and the animals regularly forage for insects in the compound overnight. Mrs Hockley-Byam said: "It's not uncommon for badgers to fall into slurry pits, but this is a first for us."Most badger groups around the country have dealt with it one time or another - it's a known hazard."The group's volunteers have previously visited the sewage works to reunite a lost cub with its parents, but "that call-out was a lot less smelly", she added.
