Police make significant arrest of robbery syndicate in Polokwane
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba stated that several businesses in Polokwane were targeted in armed robberies, with cash stolen, between March and April.
"It is reported that between March and April 2025, Polokwane was experiencing an increase in business robberies daily, wherein the shopkeepers and customers were robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and cellphones at gunpoint."
He added that detectives traced the suspects to the Ga-Makibela section and Moletjie village under the Seshego policing area, where three suspects were arrested. They then moved to Polokwane CBD, where the fourth suspect was apprehended.
The suspects later led officers to Ext 75 in the Westernburg policing area, where a black pellet firearm, resembling a real firearm and believed to have been used in the robberies, was recovered
Ledwaba further stated that during interviews at Polokwane SAPS, it became clear that the suspects were involved in multiple robberies targeting three food outlets, two supermarkets, several pharmacies, a bakery, and a boutique, leading to the apprehension of a fifth suspect.
"Further investigations led the team to Polokwane, where a Zimbabwean national, who was found in possession of three stolen cellphones and was subsequently arrested," he added.
The recovered cellphones and pellet firearm, loaded with four blank rounds, were seized. Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the stolen cellphones had already been sent to Zimbabwe.
Ledwaba added that a case of possession of suspected stolen property has been opened, and the four other arrested suspects have been positively linked to nine business robbery cases.
All five suspects are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on May 5, facing charges of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.
Acting provincial commissioner of Limpopo, Major General Manala, praised the initiative and dedication of the police team. 'We commend the involved team for their tireless efforts in restoring safety and ensuring that the perpetrators are behind bars,' Manala remarked, reaffirming the province's commitment to tackling the rising tide of crime head-on.

He added that further searches uncovered a second stolen vehicle, a Toyota Tazz reported missing in October 2024 in the Seshego policing area, prompting police to deepen their investigation into the origins of the vehicles and the legitimacy of the reported cases. This led to the arrest of two suspects who had falsely reported their vehicles as stolen. "Two suspects, Paballo Masokameng, 37 years old, the alleged mastermind behind the Porsche case, and Emmanuel Boshomane, 37 years old, owner of the Toyota Tazz, were subsequently arrested. Both initially reported their vehicles stolen under false pretences," he said. Ledwaba revealed that Masokameng, the owner of the Porsche, had initially claimed he was hijacked by three unknown men after offering them a lift. However, investigations uncovered that he had staged the hijacking, stripped and sold parts of the vehicle, and delivered it to a workshop for dismantling. He was later arrested and has since appeared in court. "He was arrested and charged with fraud, perjury, and defeating the ends of justice. He appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, July 15 and is expected to appear again on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, for a formal bail application." Ledwaba added. Ledwaba further explained that the second suspect, Boshomane, a TVET College lecturer, was allegedly enlisted by Masokameng to stage the hijacking of his Toyota Tazz. The vehicle, reported stolen from Boshomane's home in Moletjie, Seshego, was later taken to the same workshop. Boshomane was also arrested and granted bail. "The workshop owner allegedly decided to buy the car instead, changed its colour, and altered its registration number plates…Boshomane was arrested and also charged with fraud, perjury, and defeating the ends of justice." He appeared in court on July 15, was granted R500 bail, and is expected back in court on 27 August." Mustafar Hussain, the 49-year-old Tanzanian workshop owner, was also arrested during the operation. Charged with possession of stolen vehicles, he appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on July 11. He remains in custody and is set to apply for bail on July 16. Meanwhile, Limpopo's Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has issued a stern warning to those who deliberately mislead law enforcement and abuse the legal system "We will uncover the truth, no matter how elaborate the scheme. Women care workers face court over alleged elder abuse in Welkom
Six caregivers are brought to justice for their alleged mistreatment of a vulnerable resident in a retirement centre. Six women, once trusted caregivers, now stand accused of abusing an elderly woman. They appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court for alleged assault. Police spokesperson, Sergeant Palesa Thabana, said the incident occurred on July 7, where an 81-year-old elderly woman residing at a retirement care centre in Dagbreek, Welkom, was allegedly assaulted and badly injured by the caregivers of the facility. According to Thabana, a complainant known to the police alleged that Lynnette Brummer, the manager of the retirement centre, called to say the elderly woman was refusing her medication. However, upon arriving at the facility, the complainant found the victim with visible injuries and blood on her face, hands, and arms. "The victim had blood and visible injuries on the face, hands, and arms. She was allegedly discovered to be under extremely wet and cold conditions." Thabana added that police found a roll of black duct tape at the scene, stained with blood, which was allegedly used to restrain the elderly woman. "It was revealed how the employees of the retirement village badly handled the victim. Investigations revealed how the victim's hands and neck were tied with duct tape and her face covered. Police confiscated a roll of black duct tape as well as pieces of duct tape with traces of blood on them," she added. Thabana revealed that police swiftly apprehended four of the six women on July 9, charging them with serious offences including attempted murder, assault with grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, and violations of the Older Persons Act.
