Concept Speedtop debuts at Villa d'Este concours

TimesLIVE26-05-2025
While the new M2 CS made headlines at the 2025 Villa d'Este concours, it was the Concept Speedtop that arguably stole the BMW spotlight.
Elevating the Touring (station wagon) format to new heights, the sleek two-door shooting brake, like last year's Concept Skytop, is underpinned by M8 Competition architecture and powered by BMW's formidable 4.4l twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
A V-shaped front end, featuring slim headlamps and an illuminated kidney grille, leads into an elongated bonnet marked by a tapering central spine. The design element flows over the roof and ends at a spoiler perched above a sharply raked rear windscreen.
With sculpted shoulders, wide rear haunches, bespoke 14-spoke alloy wheels and a roof painted in a shifting gradient from Floating Sunstone Maroon to Floating Sundown Silver, the two-seater Concept Speedtop is visually striking and undeniably distinctive.
Inside, the cabin is rich in unique design details, including brogue-style accents on leather-trimmed surfaces. A two-tone colour scheme links exterior and interior themes, pairing Sundown Maroon with light Moonstone White upholstery. The contrast also helps to differentiate functional components from aesthetic ones.
The roof spine motif continues inside as a light strip embedded in the leather headliner, offering subtle ambient lighting. The leather-lined trunk features brogue-style perforations and a built-in light beam to emphasise its two-part layout, allowing for the storage of bulkier items.
The Concept Speedtop's interior and exterior were crafted with assistance from the BMW Group's Manufactory workshop in Dingolfing, while Italian leather specialist Schedoni supplied custom luggage tailored to match the car's materials and colours. Two dedicated compartments behind the seats house fitted Schedoni bags, with a matching weekend bag stowed in the trunk.
BMW has confirmed a limited production run of only 70 units, with pricing expected to start at about R10.4m.

BMW X3 M50 balances power, comfort and efficiency

Like its 3 Series cousin, the BMW X3 has become an important cog for the German brand and its customer base. The new sport activity vehicle (SAV), built in Rosslyn, arrived in South Africa recently in three models and won the 2026 SA Car of the Year title as voted by the Guild of Mobility Journalists. We spent time with the BMW X3 M50 xDrive variant, the high-performance model in the range. It is the flagship version until a fuller-bodied X3M materialises. The most obvious change to the new-generation X3 from the outside is the new look, with rounded corners, hexagonal shapes and a silhouette akin to the larger BMW XM. The stylish showpiece is the Kammback rear — an automotive styling feature wherein the rear of the car abruptly cuts off. This SAV is particularly good looking in the creamy white hue of the test car, which BMW calls Dune grey metallic. The interior isn't a wholesale transformation. Most of the features such as the large curved display, the array of function buttons on the central tunnel and more are modern BMW type sets. It's only the dash plastics that are in a textured mesh surface and a set of new trim lights that extend into the doors as fresh ideas. These lights also shine bright at night and broadcast moods and selected driving modes. The interior is smart and polished in feel and build quality, while the electric seats are comfy and generously padded. Standard amenities are generous but you'll need to raid the options catalogue for more. From behind the multifunction helm you get the sense that you're driving a premium car and you are driving an X3 that's larger than any model before. The new iteration stretches 4,755mm in length, 1,920mm width and 1,660mm height, making it 34mm longer, 29mm wider and 16mm taller that the previous X3. You notice the growth spurt everywhere, especially between the lanes, where it can drive autonomously. Occupants enjoy more leg, head and shoulder room, and more luggage can be swallowed by the expanded boot with a power tailgate. At times it felt like commanding an X5 but it's nicely measured and feels poised, refined and powerful, thanks to the 280kW and 580Nm 3.0 l twin-turbo straight-six petrol engine that's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system. It has a mild-hybrid 48V system injecting 13kW to the mix and silently powering the car at crawl speeds. It kicks out a combined 293kW and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.6 secs to run out of steam at 250km/h. It's a tarmac bruiser when you need it to be that also corners keenly. The more pleasing discovery is the cruising ability and low fuel-eating habits. The ride is cosseting, with little to no vibration or noise from the outside, whether driving on smooth or rough surfaces. Dedicated to saving fuel, the X3 M50 test car consumed 5.7 l /100km. Sticking to national speed limits, the figure increased to 7.6 l /100km, which was lower than the 8.2 l /100km marketed by its maker. The extravagance, performance and the potential to be frugal displayed by the most expensive model in the range will have me recommend it before any of the more affordable and sensible lower ranges powered by four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, including the X3 30e plug-in-hybrid. If the goal was to make the new X3 a resounding upgrade from the old car, BMW has achieved this with aplomb. Direct competition for the X3 M50 xDrive that's priced from R1,545,447 and sold with a two-year/unlimited distance warranty and five-year/100,000km maintenance plan include the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300d and Range Rover Evoque D200 diesels.

After a mostly positive run in May, individual segments for June continued on the same trajectory, with passenger vehicle sales posting a 21.7% gain from 26 763 to 32 570, and light commercial vehicles an uptake of 14.9% to 12 159 from last year's 10 599. 'The upbeat performance in domestic new vehicle sales builds on gains since the fourth quarter of 2024. 'This success was underpinned by a combination of favourable economic fundamentals, including decreasing interest rates following the South African Reserve Bank's 25 basis point cut May, a still-benign inflation backdrop and improved credit access across the market. In the same report, Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa remarked, 'the first half of 2025 has shown just how resilient and responsive our domestic market truly is. Strong consumer demand, supported by positive economic fundamentals, has helped the automotive sector deliver impressive growth amid global turbulence'. The association, however, warned that the second half of the year will present a more complex picture, saying, 'while domestic sales are likely to remain robust in the near term due to lagged effects of interest rate cuts and resilient consumer sentiment, consumers continue to drive demand for affordable, and high-specification models'. No DNA, just RSA: Jordan Pepper wins Spa 24 Hour

Jordan Pepper racked up another incredible endurance-race victory for South Africa this past weekend. Sharing the #63 GRT Grasser Lamborghini Huracan GT3 at the fearsome Spa 24 Hour, the trio were fast and clinical to clinch one of the toughest 24-hour races on the calendar. Unusually for the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit near the Ardennes Forest in Belgium, the entirety of the 24-hour race was dry. The race is typically interrupted by heavy rain, fog and sometimes both. In fact, extraordinarily hot conditions over the weekend had their own unique challenges for Jordan Pepper and his teammates … The Spa 24 Hour is more than an endurance race, it's a spectacle from beginning to end. Image: Newsmakers Better still, victory for Jordan Pepper in Spa is the second big win for South African GT racers in two weeks. Kelvin van der Linde took home the Nurburgring 24 Hour win in a BMW just one-week prior. Moreover, the Spa 24 Hour saw all four top South African race drivers compete: including Sheldon and Kelvin van der Linde in BMWs and David Perel in a Ferrari. However, it was the #63 GRT Grasser Lamborghini Huracan GT3 of Jordan Pepper, Mirko Bortolotti and Luca Engstler that crossed the line first. There were crashes a plenty in the 2025 edition of the Spa 24 Hour. Video: GT World on YouTube Unlike the 24 Hours of Le Mans that features top-class prototypes, the Spa 24 is for GT3 cars only. And while there are multiple classes of drivers – rated from Bronze to Platinum (like Jordan Pepper) – all compete in the same spec machinery, which keeps the racing very close. Likewise, the Nurburgring 24 Hour is unique in that it has no safety cars to bunch up the field. Meanwhile the Spa 24 does, which adds a totally different dimension to surviving and winning the race. As the #63 GRT Grasser team found out, to win you have to be brutally fast, stay out of trouble, make zero mistakes and have reliability on your side. No mistakes or mechanical maladies troubled the #63 GRT Grasser Lamborghini Huracan, which made it a straight fight for the overall win. Image: Newsmakers Bortolotti drove the final two-and-a-half-hour stint in stifling heat to cross the line. But Jordan Pepper arguably drove the most important stints that edged the Lamborghini ahead of its closest rival, the #96 Rutronik Porsche 911, on an offset pit strategy. The brutal 24-hour race ebbed and flowed and finally boiled down to a tense final pitstop for the top teams. Having made zero mistakes to that point, with just 45 minutes to go, the team used clever pit strategy to come out ahead on track by a few seconds. He took an emotional win at the iconic Bathurst 24 Hour for Bentley back in 2020. Is there are any stopping South Africa's current crop of super-fast racing drivers? Of course not, it's not DNA, it's RSA! Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
