RANAU (July 1): The Sabah government on Tuesday launched a comprehensive 15-year strategic development plan aimed at enhancing economic prosperity and preserving the rich heritage of Ranau district.
Officially launched by Sabah Minister of Finance Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun, the plan spans from 2025 to 2040 and targets inclusive and balanced growth across urban and rural communities.
Masidi highlighted Ranau's distinct strengths, particularly its potential to become a premier destination for highland tourism and agro-tourism.
'Ranau possesses unparalleled natural beauty and cultural heritage. Our strategic vision leverages these strengths to benefit all segments of our community,' he said.
The development plan, prepared by the Institute for Development Studies (IDS), emphasises seven key areas: modern rural community development, efficient governance, human capital excellence, prestigious tourism destinations, food security, sustainable natural resource management and socio-economic prosperity.
The minister also drew attention to Ranau's UNESCO Triple Crown recognition, underscoring the district's international standing in biodiversity and cultural uniqueness.
'This roadmap requires ongoing commitment from everyone, especially local communities and authorities, who will play a critical role in its successful execution,' Masidi stated, urging all residents to take active roles in shaping Ranau's future.
He further explained that the plan is designed as a flexible blueprint, adaptable to changing circumstances, technological advances, and evolving community needs.
'This is a living document, meant to grow and change with us, ensuring the aspirations of Ranau's people continue to be met in the years to come,' he concluded.

Research needed before Chinese new villages can be nominated as Unesco heritage sites

KUALA LUMPUR: The nomination of Malaysia's Chinese new villages as Unesco World Heritage sites requires thorough research before it can be pursued. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said to date, no decision has been made as to whether to declare such villages as national heritages or for submission to Unesco. "As such, the ministry, through the National Heritage Department, is of the view that the nomination of the Chinese new villages as Unesco World Heritage sites requires more in-depth research before any formal proposal can be pursued," he said. He was responding to Wan Razali Wan Nor (PN-Kuantan) on the government's position regarding the proposal to recognise Chinese new villages as Unesco heritage sites. Tiong said approval must first be obtained from the respective state authorities, as land planning and development fall under state jurisdiction and involve multiple agencies at both the federal and state levels. He said state and local authorities must also be prepared to comply with the strict guidelines set by Unesco, as the nomination must meet specific criteria. "This includes the identification of Outstanding Universal Value, authenticity, integrity, site management and others. "The recognition process can sometimes take more than 10 years, as seen with other sites in Malaysia, to ensure that all necessary information is in place to meet Unesco's criteria," he said. On action taken by the National Heritage Department to ensure that proposed heritage sites meet the historical criteria of the nation, Tiong said thorough research is conducted to verify facts and ensure accuracy, to avoid any confusion or issues arising in the future. He said before a site is considered for gazettement under the National Heritage Act 2005, it must first be reviewed by the heritage expert committee and the National Heritage Council to determine the designation of the site.

Malaysia vies for UNESCO executive board seat in final nomination phase

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is nearing the final phase of its bid for a seat on the UNESCO Executive Board, with the official announcement set for the UNESCO General Conference in Paris this November. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek confirmed the country's active campaign, emphasizing the need for strong backing from member states. 'Several rounds have already taken place, particularly during the early campaign phase, and we are now in the final round. God willing, in November, we will conclude our final tasks before the decision is announced,' she said at the Cicipan Kebaya event organised by the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (SKUM). Fadhlina, who also serves as SKUM president, highlighted that the event was part of Malaysia's broader campaign, coinciding with UNESCO's recognition of the kebaya as an Intangible Cultural Heritage last December. Further promotional efforts included a visit to Kilim Geoforest Park in Langkawi during the ASEAN Education Ministers' Meeting in June. 'Kilim is the first geopark in Malaysia to receive UNESCO recognition, and the visit showcased our commitment to environmental conservation,' said Fadzilah Fadzil, secretary of the Ministry of Education's Strategic Planning and International Relations Division. The campaign has also been advanced through Malaysia's Permanent Mission to UNESCO in Paris, with five receptions held so far. 'We explained Malaysia's vision and how we can contribute to UNESCO's global agenda, particularly in education, heritage, and sustainability,' Fadzilah added. - Bernama

State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun stated that the contingents comprise government agencies, schools, voluntary organizations and uniformed units. 'What makes this year special is that, for the first time, the celebrations will be attended by Head of State Tun Musa Aman, adding greater significance to the event. 'Tun Musa is expected to arrive at 7:30am, so we anticipate official events will take place between 7:30am and 10:30am. 'We also expect public attendance to mirror last year's, where strategic spots along the parade route will be filled early. 'Therefore, I urge all Sabahans to come together in celebrating and attending the event on August 31 at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, to demonstrate our love for our nation and for Sabah,' he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Masidi, who is also the chairman of the 2025 Sabah National Day Main Committee, said this year's theme, 'Malaysia Madani: People Embraced' (Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni), resonates deeply, especially with leaders. 'This theme is profoundly relevant, particularly as a call to leaders and those entrusted with positions of authority to always be on the ground, engaging with and caring for the people. 'Thus, this theme urges leaders to be present among the people, show compassion, and visibly demonstrate their presence as the pillars upon whom the people rely to realize their aspirations,' he added. He also advised the public to continue flying the Jalur Gemilang and the Sabah state flag as symbols of love for Malaysia and the state of Sabah. Also present were Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tan Lee Fatt and Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.
