8 Opposition parties declare 'Odisha Bandh' on July 17 over Balasore student death

India Gazette15-07-2025
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], July 15 (ANI): Eight Opposition political parties, including the Congress, on Tuesday unitedly called for 'Odisha Bandh' on July 17 over the death of a 20-year-old girl student from Balasore, demanding the resignation of the State Higher Education Minister and a judicial investigation.
'Joint opposition has resolved that Odisha will be closed on 17th July,' CPI(M) leader Suresh Panigrahi told ANI.
'The victim girl appealed to the Odisha government, the local MP and MLA, Principal, District Collector, SP and the Higher Education Minister of state and centre, but nothing happened... We demand a strict judicial investigation of the whole incident, the Higher Education Minister should resign, and some action should be taken against the local MLA and MP,' he added.
On Monday, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar confirmed the death of the 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Odisha's Balasore, who had attempted self-immolation.
She set herself on fire after allegedly facing prolonged sexual harassment by her college's Head of Department. Despite lodging a formal complaint and seeking help from the principal, her pleas were ignored, leading to the tragic incident. The incident occurred at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College.
Meanwhile, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday called the death an 'organised murder by the BJP's system,' accusing the BJP of failing to protect the victim.
Gandhi alleged that the student was subjected to repeated threats, torments and humiliation instead of receiving justice.
In a post on X, LoP Gandhi wrote, 'The death of a daughter fighting for justice in Odisha is nothing less than a murder by the BJP's system. That brave student raised her voice against sexual harassment, but instead of delivering justice, she was threatened, tormented, and repeatedly humiliated. Those who were supposed to protect her kept breaking her.'
'As always, the BJP's system continued to shield the accused and forced an innocent daughter to set herself on fire. This is not suicide; it is an organised murder by the system. Modi ji, whether in Odisha or Manipur, the daughters of the nation are burning, breaking, and dying. And you? You remain silent. The country doesn't need your silence; it needs answers. India's daughters need safety and justice,' the post read.
Earlier in the day, the Congress workers staged a protest outside AIIMS Bhubaneswar following the death of the student. Police later detained the protesting workers. (ANI)

Kiran Kher in trouble: Chandigarh admin issues Rs 13 lakh notice for unpaid govt house rent

Chandigarh, July 23 (UNI) Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kiran Kher has been served a notice by the Chandigarh administration for failing to clear a hefty outstanding licence fee of Rs 12,76,418. The dues pertain to a government house (T-6/23) allotted to her in Sector 7 during her tenure as an MP. The notice, issued by the Assistant Controller (F&A) Rents, was delivered to her residence at House No. 65, Sector 8-A, on June 24, 2025. The notice demands immediate payment of the pending amount, which includes the original licence fee (rent) along with substantial penalties of up to 100% and 200% on certain components. The administration has warned that failure to settle the dues within the stipulated time will attract an additional 12% annual interest on the total outstanding amount. Kher has been instructed to make the payment through a demand draft or bank transfer, but only after verifying the details with the cashier to ensure accuracy. This development has raised eyebrows, as Kher, a prominent public figure known for her contributions to both politics and the entertainment industry, now faces scrutiny over the unpaid dues. The administration's strict stance underscores its commitment to recovering outstanding amounts from allottees of government properties, regardless of their stature. UNI NB PRS

‘25 times in 73 days': Congress on Trump's repeated India-Pak ceasefire claim; Rahul Gandhi asks ‘Why is he saying it'

Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday raised eyebrows over former US President Donald Trump's recurring claims of brokering peace between India and Pakistan. Speaking on Trump's repeated remarks, Gandhi asked, 'Why is he saying it so many times?' The comment came after US President Donald Trump once again claimed credit for stopping a potential nuclear conflict between the two South Asian neighbours, India and Pakistan, allegedly using trade threats as leverage. Echoing Rahul Gandhi's concerns, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh strongly criticised the Narendra Modi-led government for its silence on Trump's statements and its failure to provide clarity on key national security matters, including the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Ramesh noted that Trump's claim has now reached a symbolic milestone. 'The claims of a 'ceasefire' made by Trump have reached their silver jubilee with the US President reiterating them 25 times in the last 73 days,' he said. In a post on X, Jairam Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of avoiding critical debate: 'As the Modi government continues in its refusal to give firm dates for a debate on Pahalgam-Sindoor in Parliament and as the Modi government persists in its refusal to commit to a reply by the PM in the debate, President Trump reaches the silver jubilee, the quarter-century mark on his claims. He has trumpeted 25 times in the last 73 days, but the Prime Minister of India is totally quiet – finding time only to travel abroad and to destabilise democratic institutions at home.' Donald Trump's latest claim restated his supposed role in preventing a major war: 'We have stopped wars between India and Pakistan. They were probably going to end up in a nuclear war. They shot down five planes in the last attack. It was back and forth, back and forth. I called them and I said no more trade if you do this. They are both powerful nuclear nations. Who knows where that would have ended up, and I stopped it,' he said. The Opposition has also demanded that PM Modi address Parliament and the nation regarding Operation Sindoor and the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise currently underway in Bihar.
