Six new car brands coming to the UK this year including Porsche rival & EV-maker selling bargain-priced hatchback

The Sun27-04-2025
A WAVE of new car brands is set to enter the UK market this year, with many hailing from China as they shift their focus towards Europe.
Among them is BYD's rival to Porsche, as well as NIO 's budget-friendly sub-brand, Firefly, which could compete with established players such as Renault and Dacia.
Denza
Porsche could soon face some serious competition from China in the form of motoring giant BYD.
The ever-expanding car brand, one of the largest private companies in China, has already begun making waves globally, including in the UK, with its range of Tesla-challenging EVs.
For those seeking something with more speed and luxury, their sister brand Denza might appeal, starting with the first car in its line-up – the stunning Z9 GT.
Clearly borrowing design cues from Porsche's Taycan and Panamera, the grand tourer, with its shooting brake estate styling, was unveiled at the recent Milan Design Week ahead of its European market release later this year.
The Z9 GT, available in both EV and PHEV variants, will be followed by four to six models in Europe, including SUVs and off-roaders, launching over the next few years.
Firefly
6
From one sister brand to another: Firefly will be the lower-tier, budget option introduced by Chinese EV maker NIO.
Its first UK offering will be a sleek, five-door supermini designed to rival the Renault 5 and Dacia Spring as one of the most affordable electric cars on the market.
Specifications such as power and range have yet to be confirmed, but it will feature NIO's innovative battery-swap technology.
GAC
6
Earlier this month, it was revealed that the little-known brand GAC is preparing to take on the mighty MINI with an all-electric hatchback.
The Chinese manufacturer, which has partnerships with Honda and Toyota, is one of the country's largest carmakers.

GAC is gearing up for its UK debut with the stylish Aion UT hatchback, billed as 'China's version of the Mini'.
The compact car certainly bears a resemblance to the iconic Mini and has been designed with city dr i ving in mind.
In terms of size, it's perhaps closer to the Volkswagen ID.3, with its interior space being remarkably well-utilised.
The Aion UT is expected to launch in the UK at a price point just above £20,000, making it significantly cheaper than the £30,795-rated ID.3 and roughly on par with the MG 4 EV and the Renault 5.
Mobilize
6
It's not all about China, as Renault's new urban mobility brand is entering the fray to challenge the UK's favourite quadricycles – the enduring Citroën Ami and the charming Micro Microlino.
The Mobilize Duo, a spiritual successor to the cult-favourite Twizy, reportedly has a 100-mile range with its larger battery version, while a van variant—called the Bento—provides additional cargo space at the rear.
Onvo
Another NIO-owned brand is set to arrive in the UK in the coming months, offering an affordable EV that could give Tesla a run for its money.
The luxurious Onvo L60 coupe-SUV is expected to hit showrooms soon, with a particular emphasis on value as it aims to undercut Tesla's hugely popular Model Y.
The L60 prioritises interior space, with NIO claiming the model's short overhangs maximise cabin room and that 'with ingenious storage design, every occupant can bring along their own luggage'.
It's also significantly more powerful than the £46,990-rated Model Y, featuring a 900V electrical architecture capable of ultra-rapid charging.
Yangwang
6
The curiously named Yangwang, like Denza, is linked to BYD – but with an added touch of prestige.
Yangwang specialises in large, luxury SUVs, such as the Yangwang U8, a rugged off-roader with a surprising party trick: it can float in water for up to 30 minutes.

TikTok ban: App goes dark if China doesn't agree to US deal

"If that deal gets approved by the Chinese, then that deal will happen. If they don't approve it, then TikTok is going to go dark," Lutnick said. "And those decisions are coming very soon, so let's see what the Chinese do. They've got to approve it. The deal is over to them right now." When asked if the potential agreement is a part of current trade talks with China, Lutnick said it was being discussed, but "not officially." "You can't really go meet somebody and not bring up the topics that are open," Lutnick said during the interview. "It's not officially a part of it, but unofficially, of course, it's going to be discussed. Neither TikTok nor the White House immediately responded for comment when contacted by USA TODAY on July 24. TikTok: Trump signs executive order delaying ban on TikTok - again When could TikTok go dark in the US? The next deadline for TikTok to be sold from ByteDance is Sept. 17. Trump signed an executive order, the third of its kind, to extend the deadline in June. Why could TikTok get banned? TikTok's future in the United States has been up in the air for months. In January, the platform went dark for less than 24 hours under federal legislation signed into law by former President Joe Biden. For years, some government officials have been concerned that TikTok is a national security threat, believing that ByteDance, which is based in Beijing, is sharing U.S. user data with China. TikTok has repeatedly denied these claims. Three times now, Trump has signed executive orders that push back the deadline for when TikTok must be sold, promising that deals with China are on the horizon. The latest was in early July, when Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he was hopeful Chinese President Xi would agree to a deal to see the platform to the U.S. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Cadillac have chosen the two F1 stars they want to sign for 2026

Team principal Graeme Lowdon is said to have settled on the two Formula 1 drivers he wants to sign for Cadillac ahead of their debut season in the sport next year Formula 1 newbies Cadillac are said to have decided which drivers they want to lead their charge on track in their debut season. The American outfit will become the sport's 11th team when it debuts next March at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. ‌ With just one year to get everything in place, team principal Graeme Lowdon has plenty on his plate from hiring staff to setting up manufacturing processes and designing their first ever F1 car. Plus, of course, he must hire two drivers to get behind the wheel of those machines next season. ‌ During a recent podcast appearance, Lowdon offered seven names as he shed some light on the decision process. Mick Schumacher, Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, Felipe Drugovich, Frederik Vesti, Arvid Lindblad and Colton Herta were the drivers he mentioned as he discussed Cadillac's options. ‌ And it appears he has narrowed down his options further by choosing his two preferred driver options. Lowdon told Mirror Sport earlier this month that he would prefer "experienced" options and he seems to have stuck to that. Speaking on F1 TV ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, correspondent Lawrence Barretto was speaking about the situation of Bottas who is a man in demand. Back at Mercedes as a reserve this year after losing his Sauber race seat, the Finn is wanted by Alpine but also seems to be a leading candidate for Cadillac. "The more likely landing spot for him is Cadillac," said Barretto, who also revealed the name of the other driver in pole position for a seat. "I hear that they haven't got any contracts done, not even any ahead of terms, but Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are the two drivers that they want at that team. "It's just a case of them going through the motions with it. It might be some time until we find that out. Obviously, there is still some time for that to change, but that's where we're looking I think. ‌ "That's where I think it's going, which makes sense because Valtteri could maybe use the Alpine interest to maybe get a better deal. They want experience, and those two drivers offer that in bags." Both drivers are multi-race winners throughout their long F1 careers. Bottas won 10 races over five seasons as team-mate to Lewis Hamilton during his first spell with Mercedes, while Perez is a six-time race winner himself, five with Red Bull after his maiden success while still at Racing Point. Should Cadillac end up contracting those two racers, it will be a tough pill to swallow for Zhou Guanyu. The Chinese racer, now reserve at Ferrari, is also looking for a way back onto the grid and may have been expecting to be a front-runner, given Lowdon was previously a member of his management team.

Li says that the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) is completely adaptable and can also be turned into a cinema, a study, a bedroom or even a warehouse. Car fan and lifestyle vlogger Shu Xu said that the new motor could be a nightmare for Elon Musk's Tesla. Writing on TikTok, he said: "This Chinese EV is Tesla's nightmare. "The second row turns around and creates a living room, it even comes with a table that mounts directly to the floor. "And if you get tired, it has a zero gravity lounge chair mode to relax in. It has 400 miles of all-electric range and sells for 500,000 Yuan ($70,000)." The Li Mega was first unveiled in China back in 2024, and customers first received orders for the car a year later. The vehicle is jam-packed with incredible features such as heated stone massage seats and a 270° wraparound heating system. It even has its own fridge, a wireless charging panel, and memory foam seats. The car is currently only available in China, but the motor company is currently exploring overseas expansion. The Mercedes-Benz Vision V will be a range of luxurious people carriers, set to launch in 2026. The new motors will come in a variety of different models, from ultra-luxurious "CEO transport" to seven-seater family cars. The interior of the vans will be incredibly luxe, with the seats made from white leather. Wood is also used on the walls of the car, and there are clear acrylic storage compartments attached to the doors. The cabinets are said to mimic display cabinets in high-end designer stores, and can be used to carry handbags or sunglasses. Passengers can even separate themselves from the driver with a glass panel, which creates a "private lounge." This panel can then turn into a 4k resolution 65-inch cinema screen, which can be expanded thanks to seven additional projectors in the floor and roofliner. The projectors can all be sticked together, creating a 360 degree viewing experience. The car even has both a karaoke mode and a gaming mode, meaning passengers will never be bored on long car journeys. 5 The car is currently only available in China Credit: Getty
