'Bond. James Bond' - Yes, he is back and 'Peaky Blinders' creator Steven Knight to write next film on eveyone's favourite superspy
It marks the latest step in a major overhaul of the iconic British spy franchise, following Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson handing over creative control to Amazon as part of a lucrative deal.
Knight told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: "It has always been on my bucket list and it's fantastic to be invited to do it, and I can't wait to get started.'
He added: "I'm hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it will be imbued into me and I will be able to produce something that's the same but different, and better, stronger and bolder.'
In June it was announced that Dune's Denis Villeneuve will direct the film, which will be produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman via Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films respectively.
The pair consistently maintained that they would secure a director and develop a screenplay before casting the next super spy.
There has been speculation about who will take up the mantle of Bond after Daniel Craig's final portrayal in 2021's "No Time to Die."
In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM, including the rights to distribute James Bond films.
The official Bond film franchise had been controlled by members of the Broccoli family, either single-handedly or in partnership with others, since the first 007 movie "Dr No" in 1962.
Knight, 65, is the creator of historical drama series "A Thousand Blows," BBC's "This Town" and Netflix mini-series "All The Light We Cannot See."
He is also executive producer on the new series, "Built In Birmingham: Brady And The Blues," which follows Birmingham City football club and key ownership figures, including former NFL quarterback Tom Brady and US businessman Tom Wagner.
His upcoming projects include Netflix's "Peaky Blinders" film and historical drama series "House Of Guinness." - dpa

Stella Rimington, first woman to lead UK's MI5 dies at 90
LONDON: Stella Rimington, the first woman to head the UK's domestic secret service MI5, has died at the age of 90, the spy agency announced on Monday. Rimington, who led MI5 from 1992 to 1996, was widely believed to be the inspiration behind the female role of M in the James Bond movies, played by UK star Judi Dench. She was the first director general of the intelligence service who was publicly named, as before Rimington's appointment in 1992, MI5 chiefs were never officially identified or photographed. Publication of her identity caused a press frenzy. "As the first avowed female head of any intelligence agency in the world, Dame Stella broke through long-standing barriers and was a visible example of the importance of diversity in leadership," the current MI5 director general Ken McCallum said in a statement. "Her leadership ushered in a new era of openness and transparency about the work MI5 does to keep this country safe, a legacy that continues to this day." MCallum presented his condolences to Rimington's husband, two daughters, and her whole family after her death on Sunday. In a statement, her family said: "She died surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath." Born on May 13, 1935, in the southern London district of South Norwood, Rimington was first employed as a part-time typist at the British embassy in Delhi, having accompanied her diplomat husband to India. She then joined MI5 in a full-time post in 1969. Dubbed the "housewife superspy", the agency said Rimington had held various roles including in counter-subversion, counter-espionage and counter-terrorism. During her time as director general, the agency "underwent far-reaching transformation", the statement said. It also moved its headquarters and "instituted a policy of greater public openness to demystify the work of MI5, including beginning a programme of releasing MI5 files to The National Archives." But Rimington triggered controversy when she published her memoirs "Open Secret" in 2001 after her retirement, with some accusing her of treason and MI5 of trying to block the publication. "It was quite upsetting because suddenly you go from being an insider to being an outsider and that's quite a shock," she told The Guardian daily newspaper at the time. But she added: "I've never been one to retreat at the first whiff of gunshot." Another woman, Eliza Manningham-Butler, took up the helm of MI5 between 2002-2007. And Blaise Metreweli was named in June as the first female head of the UK's overseas spy service MI6.

‘Wednesday' is back: Netflix's dark darling returns with Addams family drama and female power in season two
LONDON, Aug 5 — Actress Jenna Ortega and the creators of the hit Netflix series Wednesday are hoping to surpass expectations as the show returns to screens after almost three years. The dark fantasy series' first season, which premiered in November 2022, ranks as Netflix's most popular English-language show of all time, with more than 252 million views in the first 91 days of release. As well as reprising the titular role, Ortega, 22, took on executive producer duties for the new season. Filmmaker Tim Burton also returns as one of the directors and executive producers. 'I've always been very protective of the character. I just want to make sure that we're always doing her justice,' said Ortega. 'It's the most we've ever seen her on screen so there's a lot of room and opportunity to maybe go off track. 'Fortunately we have a really great creative team. I'm doing my best to be on it, but you also have people like Tim, who are monitoring.' The second season sees Wednesday returning to Nevermore Academy as a celebrated hero, much to her dismay. She investigates new supernatural mysteries, while dealing with glitches in her psychic powers. Wednesday also faces another nuisance — family. Her little brother Pugsley starts his studies at Nevermore and their parents are a frequent presence on campus. 'Play of emotions' Bringing the Addams Family to the academy allowed co-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to expand the storylines of the characters introduced in the first season and explore mother-daughter dynamics. 'We thought, wouldn't that be, for Wednesday, the ultimate thorn in her side if Morticia (her mother) came to school,' said Millar. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia, promised fast-paced scenes between the two. 'It's a dance and a play of emotions,' Zeta-Jones said. The season's focus on female relationships stood out as one of its stronger points for Ortega. 'We're so oftentimes taught to compete against one another and there's always some sort of comparing game that people are going to enforce on you,' Ortega said. 'What I love about the women I am working with and the characters, every woman in this show wants to see the other succeed. I think that's really important for young people to see today,' she added. The sophomore season also introduces new characters, including Steve Buscemi's Nevermore principal Barry Dort and the Addams family matriarch Grandmama Hester Frump, played by Joanna Lumley. Pop star Lady Gaga makes a guest star appearance as a teacher in Part 2. Wednesday has already been renewed for a third season, with Gough and Millar in the writers' room 'cooking that up' and ready to go beyond. 'We have goalposts for other things. There could be spinoffs, there could be other iterations of the show,' Millar said. 'It's such a big world. We are excited to explore it as much as we can.'
